Cottage in Avoch, Scottish Highlands, Scotland 10 miles north of Inverness - Tranquil Location With Sea Shore Garden To The Front

Tanera More was built as a fishermans cottage about 180 years ago and retains many original features. The situation on the shore of the Moray Firth makes it a delightful place to spend time simply admiring the views and the changing light over the sea. Great location for many outdoor activities. Walking, Cycling, Sailing, Birdwatching, Golf and horse riding can all be enjoyed locally. There are some excellent local museums for rainy days and good restaurants to be found in Fortrose, Munlochy and Cromarty. The highland capital of Inverness is only 10 miles away and boat cruises on Loch Ness are always popular. Ancient Pictish remains dot the landscape in this area which is mainly agricultural. It is a perfect gate way to the west coast for a day out to the Isle of Skye and the beauty of the more rugged west coast.

Tanera More is the ideal "Highland cottage by the sea". The village of Avoch has always been a fishermans cove and the small harbour continues to support a small community of fisherman plus a new generation of pleasure trips to see the dolphins. This part of the Moray Firth enjoys a mild climate sheltered from the open seas by Channory Point, and the area is abundant in wild life. The Cairngorm mountains to the south are covered in snow during the winter months and lure out door enthusiasts. Local culture of legend and folklore are on the door step and intriguing Pictish remains dot the landscape. Sandy beaches are close by in Rosemarkie and there's golfing in Fortrose. It's the perfect holiday getaway, yet is only 10 miles from the amenities of Inverness.

April 2015 "Just lovely"



I stayed with my partner and two friends visiting from Sweden for 3 nights in early April. We were very lucky with the weather and had a great time, my friends are planning their next Scotland trip already! The cottage lies on a quiet street right next to the beach. It is gorgeous and has a high standard, clean and has everything you could need as well as a cozy garden. There was even a nice bottle of wine waiting on the kitchen table on arrival! Suzana is a lovely host. Our only regret is not staying longer! Hope to go back again soon. Miri



October 2014 "Lovely traditional cottage"



I spent a lovely four nights here with friends at short notice after our original plans fell through. I booked this cottage after Suzana responded promptly to my request: she arranged our stay speedily and was very welcoming. The cottage has a traditional feel to it but with all the comforts you'd expect from a holiday rental. The location is wonderful - it is private and secluded but just a short walk from shops and eateries. We would definitely consider booking this cottage again.

Cosy cottage with fantastic sea views

The cottage is in an idyllic waterfront location, on a quiet lane with relaxing views of the sea from all rooms. Lots of character to the property with stylish/modern kitchen and bathroom and comfortable beds.Good TV and Wi-Fi access. Was well equipped with good quality kitchenware/crockery and essentials such as loo rolls, dishwasher tabs, soap etc. (not always the case with holiday lets!). Extra touches such as fresh flowers and a bottle of wine much appreciated. The heating was very effective so we were lovely and cosy. Good location for exploring and sightseeing - Rosemarkie, Cromarty, Fort George, Chanory Point, Dornoch, Inverness etc. Village of Avoch itself has a very good Co-op food store which was a short walk away from the cottage. Plus a good fish and chip shop.

Ideal place to stay in the Highlands

Great view over the Moray Firth. Ideal for visiting Loch Ness and the Highlands and even taking no in some Scottish football at either Ross County or Inverness. The cottage is brilliantly equipped and we wouldn't hesitate in staying there again if in the area.

Magic by the North Sea

We had a lovely stay at this darling cottage! It was so relaxing and comfortable - we hated to leave. We came home with lots of shells and sea glass that we gathered along the beach. The sunrises and the moonrises make beautiful photos. Thank you, Suzana, for making this magical place available! We hope to return.

Enjoyed staying at Tanera More as it is centrally located small town on the Black Isle. Cottage is very clean and very well equipped with everything needed. Dealing with Susana was a joy.

An ideal retreat

Stayed during changeable weather conditions which didn't hinder exploring local attractions & spotting dolphins at Chanonry Point. Returning to a warm, cosy, well appointed cottage was the ideal retreat. Suzana was a very welcoming host, who provided a wonderful place to stay & all the information you required. Cottage is on the coast. Nearest sandy beach is Rosemarkie about 3 to 4 miles away. Channory Point, Fortrose, to Rosemarkie bay is a beautiful sandy stretch with safe swimming in the summer months. Channory Point and the Moray Firth is a great place for dolphin watching, simply drive out to the point below the light house. Boat trips leave from Avoch harbour daily, consult the tide timetables for excursions at the harbour office.

The village of Avoch has a post office/fisherman's co operative, a general store which opens from 7am and three take away food outlets

Whisky. Whisky enthusiasts have many opportunities to visit highland distilleries in the area, take the tours & enjoy the tastings!

Castles. Many of the old Highland castles are open to the public during the summer months and have lovely gardens and events for all the family.

Loch Ness. No trip to the Highlands would be complete without a visit to Loch Ness. The Clansman Hotel on the northern banks of the loch has a popular cafe/restaurant and provides a great stop off. The pier on the loch side is also a stop off for loch cruises. A cruise down the loch can be a memorable way to visit Loch Ness.

Cairngorm. Ski enthusiasts in the winter months and mountaineers, walkers & hikers can all make the Black Isle a base for days out to Cairngorm National Park. The Funicular railway is an option for members of your party less energetic and the Patarmigan restaurant on the top is a welcome lunch stop.

Inverness City. The growing city of Inverness provides an excellent selection of theatre, cinema and other night life, as well as a wide selection of city centre shopping and out of town superstores.

Culloden Battle. This famous battle field can reveal its tragic past, and the visitors centre has received high praise for it's interactive displays.

  • Notes on accommodation: The cottage being an old building has low ceilings and many different levels on the ground floor. Shallow step down into the kitchen, lounge and bathroom which also has a low door way under the stairs. Not suitable for people with mobility problems. The cottage is all electric with strict No Smoking, No Pets and No open fires policy. The fire places are purely ornamental. Central heating radiators downstairs and electric convector heaters in the bedrooms. Outside: Garden to the front borders the sea shore. Garden to the rear is private and is somewhat wild, though undercontrol. There is some outdoor furniture available and an outside bench for sunny days. The garden is a project yet to be undertaken !!! It is home to many small birds and the occasional duck or pheasant. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen and towels provided, bath mat, tea towels. Linen changed weekly. Property cleaned weekly. Cleaning available mid week as an extra.
