About Sarah & Matt (Almond Hill House)

The house has been enjoyed as a holiday house since 1994 – and is one of the first in Granada registered as a Vivienda Rural.

We bought Almond Hill House in 2014 and completely modernised the house whilst retaining its rustic charm and making the house accessible.

We live in a neighboring property with our own private gardens, terraces and driveway. We will greet you on arrival and are discretely on hand if required.

Sarah & Matt (Almond Hill House) purchased this villa in 2014

Why Sarah & Matt (Almond Hill House) chose Sierra Nevada Area

It's in a rural location, at the end of a lane, away from busy roads and yet only a 5 minute drive from town (or a 25 minute walk if you are feeling a bit more energetic).

Close to Granada and the Alhambra; beaches and beautiful mountain villages.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for our wonderful stay – we returned to London wishing so much that we could have stayed longer. It really was a magical week and so relaxing. Almond Hill House is so beautiful and had everything (& more) that we needed. The gated pool was so useful as we could relax knowing Martha and Tate were safe. We really hope we can come back next year as there's so many amazing bits we didn't get to visit. I'll be recommending your house to any friends in need of the perfect relaxing holiday. Notes:
The property has been registered as a 'Vivienda Rural' (approved by the Andalucia Tourist Board - VTAR/GR/0007) since 2002 – one of the first to be registered in Granada province. The house was renovated in 2015 - fully modernised bathrooms and kitchen and excellent insulation for cosy winter holidays - whilst retaining original features. The walk to town takes around 20 minutes. The first 50 metres is down a rocky goat track from the house which joins up with quiet back lanes leading to town. The track may be a bit steep for those with limited mobility.

Ideal base for walking in the Alpujarras

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of ten staying at Almond Hill House for a walking holiday. The house is as good as described, with ample space to accommodate us all comfortably and had all the facilities we were expecting. Sarah and Matt provided excellent customer service, replying promptly by email or text to queries both before and during the stay.

There are superb walks that can be done directly from the house, including a section of the GR 142. The starting points for higher level walks in the Sierra Nevada can easily be reached by car, for example it took us 40 minutes to drive to the village of Capileira.

Returning to he house in the afternoon, it was great to have a swim in the pool, then prepare some food and eat while sitting at the garden table in the warm evening.

Another review has mentioned the lane access; we had no difficulty driving right up to the house in our hired Zafira and Touran, but I think larger vehicles than this would have made the drive challenging.

We all enjoyed our stay at Almond Hill House and we would certainly recommend it to others.

Perfect family holiday

  • 5 of 5

Almond Hill House really did live up to all expectations. The location was stunning with beautiful views and the owners, Matt and Sarah, could not have been more welcoming. We were greeted with home baked bread and locally produced olive oil, amongst other things, and any queries or requests were dealt with immediately. The house was beautifully presented and absolutely perfect for the three generation holiday we had planned. Although there were eight adults and three small children, it was always possible to find a quiet spot to relax, either in the house or around the grounds.

There was plenty to do locally: the country walk into Orgiva, the local town, with its good restaurants, or short drives up into the Aljapuras to see the beautiful white villages. For those in our party who felt energetic, there were countless footpaths for short walks or longer hikes.

We all enjoyed our stay enormously and cannot thank Sarah and Matt enough for their hospitality and attention to detail, which combined to make our holiday simply perfect.

An excellent house

  • 5 of 5

Almond Hill House is the perfect location for an inter-generational family holiday. The house is spacious, well appointed, clean and very comfortable. Hence it makes a good place to stay even out of the main holiday season. The garden is lovely with the terrace being particularly suitable for outdoor eating. We loved the pool and because this is in a separate gated area could happily let our grandchild play in the garden without worrying that she would have unaccompanied access to the pool.

The owners, Matt and Sarah, were kind and helpful. They welcomed us on arrival and offered useful advice on the area. Although they live in the house next door we were completely unaware of their presence so it was the perfect balance of help being on hand if we needed it but complete privacy if we didn't. I can't recommend them highly enough as owners.

Orgiva is a useful little town and has a number of restaurants and bars. There is also a first rate supermarket so food shopping is easy. You can drive into town from the property - it takes about five minutes - or walk from the house which takes about twenty minutes. Driving from the house up into the Sierra Nevada is easy (although the road is twisty) and there are pretty villages to visit on the way up to Trevelez.

One thing future visitors might want to be aware of is that the lane down to the house is, at times, very narrow and so a smaller hire car is useful. We made the mistake of hiring a large people carrier and this made the drive up and down to the house from the main road a bit tricky. So, if you are a large party maybe think about hiring a couple of cars rather than the 'hefty beast' that we did!

Owner's Response: We’re delighted you all had a lovely time at Almond Hill House and thank you for the great review. Yes, it is best to hire a car or ‘normal’ people carrier (e.g. a Zafira) which many of our guests do and have no problems getting to and from the property. The 1km lane is tarmacked all the way to the house. Some guests have hired mini-vans too. We understand that your car hire company made a mistake and gave you an unusually-long vehicle – the ‘hefty beast’, as you say! Best wishes

A Wonderful Oasis in Andalucia

  • 5 of 5

We were two families sharing the property and even at our maximum of 9 we had lots of room for either mixing or a bit of quiet time. Almond Hill House is located at the end of a narrow country lane [do not rent a large SUV] and is very quiet. The view down the valley and across to the mountains is spectacular. The only disturbance is the occasional herd of goats along the track below the property. Matt and Sarah were an absolute delight to deal with. They met our cars to guide us to the house, gave us welcome gifts, provided two extra cafetieres and a paella pan, gave excellent advice on restaurants and shops and dealt with any issues immediately. The house is wonderful and the kitchen well equipped. Practically every bedroom has a bathroom with shower and WC. We spent most of our time in the glorious out door space. This has a large sitting area with a 10 seat dinning table, BBQ and is surrounded by flowers, herbs and plants. The pool is lovely with lots of chairs and toys and a great view. A perfect place to sip lemonade made from fruit picked at the house’s orchard. You are about 5 minutes drive or 20 minutes walk from Orgiva with its great restaurants, bars and a good selection of grocery stores [including a butcher and a fishmonger]. Granada, with the wonderful Alhambra, is about an hour away and the coast, with great seafood, only a 30 minute drive. If we were to return to this part of Spain I would most certainly stay at Almond Hill House again.

Amazing Almond Hill

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and our 2 daughters (7yrs & 4yrs) had the most wonderful time in Almond Hill house. We stayed for a week in May along with 2 others families (good friends of ours) both with children of similar ages. Day 1 we arrived at the farmhouse no problems thanks to the excellent directions Matt and Sarah (the owners) had given us. The kids fell in love with the house instantly. It is really child friendly with a secure gated pool and the yoga hut became their colouring den for when it became too hot outside. The house has its own orchards with lemons, figs, olives, tangerines and almonds. All off which we got to sample while staying there. Every evening the local goat herder would pass by the house and down the goat track. We all walked down the mountain with them, not sure whether the adults or the kids enjoyed it more! Orgiva the nearest town is about a 20-30 minute walk down the goat track with plenty of shops and restaurants. However we were so content in the house that we barbecued most evenings. Two local chefs Wes and Sam came to cook for us one evening. We had the most amazing feast all for a very reasonable price. I would highly recommend them! There are plenty of beautiful local villages nearby easily reached by car and we visited a few of them, but we would love to come back to see more. This was definitely one of the best family holidays we have been on. The house, the location and the owners were fantastic and we will definitely be back!!

As good as the website leads you to believe

  • 5 of 5

We loved this house and its grounds - it's just as described on the informative website.

The gated garden, the secure pool area and the provision of two high chairs and cots allowed us a relaxing, child-friendly holiday. The big, well equipped kitchen combined with great local produce made cooking for ten a doddle.

We all liked the very efficient, helpful owners who are nearby if needed - but never intrusive.
