L'Ecurie Holiday Home with Heated Pool, Gardens and Well-stocked Games Room

Updated: 14-Oct-2016
L'Ecurie at Maison Lairoux Holiday Homes in Lairoux, Nr. Lucon, Vendee, Pays de la Loire, France - Village Location, Only 15 Minutes Drive From The Beach

L'Ecurie is a comfortable 2 bedroom holiday home, sleeping up to 5 guests, plus a baby. It has fantastic views across the valley to the Wetlands below and has an outside terrace & BBQ area ideally positioned for watching the sunset - with a glass of the local wine.

L'Ecurie is set in a gravelled courtyard, off a quiet road in the centre of the village and is only a 15 minute drive to the beach.

This house offers great family accommodation - with everything that you would need for a relaxing holiday - including a dishwasher, washing machine, laptop with internet access, UK TV channels and owners living onsite, and able to offer help and advice on where to go if this is your first visit to the Vendee.

There is a large master bedroom and twin bedroom, along with a new shower room with double shower cubicle, hand basin and WC. The master bedroom (35m²) has a king sized bed, single bed and a cot for younger children and lovely views over the gardens and Wetland valley. (Telescope provided!)

Outside there is a private terrace with pergola, dining table and chairs and Weber Barbecue.

There is also a large games room full of toys and board games for all ages, along with a ping pong table, pool table, table football, Xbox 360 & games, drawing materials, DVD library, holiday reading library and lots more!

Next to the games room is a gym – with cross trainer, treadmill, rower, bike and weights, along with a selection of bicycles for your use.

The 12m x 7m heated pool is open from May until the end of September and is fenced in for the security of your children.

Wi-Fi internet access is available throughout the house, terrace and pool area and some well-behaved pets are accepted (please ask for more details).

The pool, gardens and games room are shared with our other three bedroom holiday home (Le Vieux Café) and both can be rented together or individually. (The children staying in each house usually play well together - leaving the parents to relax!)

L’Ecurie is set on one level with only a few steps leading down to the master bedroom, so may be suitable for guests with limited mobility.

What can we say? A fantastic place to stay with the most equipped accommodation we have ever stayed in (and we often self cater). The easy WiFi & family room were key to this choice but still exceeded our expectations. Annette & Jason top hosts.

Puy de Fou a spectacle but v. busy. However a real gem is the Chateau des Aventuriers - a must for adults and children - very near by at Avrillé, what a find, brilliant challenges and catering for non French visitors - a tragedy if you did not go! The castle ruin at Talmont St Hilaire was brilliant too, so do go there (en route to Les Sables...) La Rochelle / lie de Ré also not to be missed. Have fun! We certainly did!

Simon, Caroline, Nelly & William. Stroud. June 2014

Fantastic holiday ! Pool much loved by all to cool down in late afternoon. Nelly is now a confident pool user and william loved climbing in and out.

Lots of days out. Recommend La Rochelle & aquarium; Fontenay-le-Comte – very pretty & 2 play areas!; Chateau des Aventuriers – with pirates & dinosaurs & pretty grounds & house (food v. expensive though) Food market in Luçon v.good. So much choice.

Play room great fun. CD/DVD’s useful. Hosts – Jason & Annette were fantastic. Babysitting really helpful and allowed us meals out – such a treat!

This gite & setting is fabulous. Really relaxing & well located to visit the beach, towns or nature reserve.

Clare, Steve, Amy & Mark. Buckinghamshire. July/August 2014

It is possible to find a really well equipped villa, or a great pool, or a fab location, but rarely all together! What fantastic accommodation and generous hosts (birthday cakes, drinks & nibbles, underwater cameras... the list goes on!) Thanks Annette & Jason for making us all welcome - including the roving hound.

Clare, Colin, Oliver & Sam – Abingdon. July 2013

A wonderfully relaxing and enjoyable stay. Everything we needed was here. Jason & Annette were perfect hosts – tourist info, BBQ, and IT support!! We would recommend Les Conches beach and Le Grand Defi high ropes. The Velo Rail is also a fun day out.

Oliver (9) – I really liked the games room and pool. Thanks for letting me swim at night.

Sam (4) – enjoyed playing with all the cats and chatting to Annette in her kitchen!

We will be back!!

L'Ecurie was a lovely gite and had all of the amenities that you would expect and more. Annette and Jason are great hosts and very helpful with any questions that you may have. My mother and I and my 2 doggies thouroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely return if Annette and Jason will have us back!

A spacious holiday home in a lovely spot

  • 5 of 5

This was our first time in France as a family of 4 (with teenagers aged 14 & 18). The holiday home was just perfect for us, very spacious, well laid out with a gorgeous bathroom and a modern very well equipped kitchen. The gardens were lovely and full of butterflies and bees which my daughter loved to photograph. The pool was a godsend with the hot weather we had. And the surrounding area is a lovely quiet pretty place. You do need a car to get out and about but this wasn't a problem as we were keen to venture out every day to so many places, including La Rochelle, the island of Ile de Rae (very pretty with great views from the castle), Puy Du Fou (a huge hit with us all, very spectacular shows), and to gorgeous beaches including Tranche Sur Mer and Veillon Plage. And last but not least a mention of our fabulous hosts Annette and Jason (who live on site across the courtyard). They were simply so so friendly and helpful. Our week in France wouldn't have been the same if it wasn't for all their recommendations for places to visit, restaurants to go to and assistance with booking tickets (for Puy du Fou), taxi service 1 night and general chit chat every day. We highly recommend L'Ecurie Holiday home ;-) .

Excellent property in a very pretty location

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic week stay in Lairoux. Annette and Jason on hand with advice. Immaculate accommodation with the added benefit of a gym and a games room. An ideal place for a family where the parents can rest by the pool and the children can play for hours with all the games available. The weather was not good.....well it was February so we made full use of the gym, table tennis and snooker when not travelling around the area, we loved La Rochelle and viewing the birds and coypu at the hide. I think the beaches would also be amazing in the summer, but a bit too windy for us. Thankyou

Faultless stay

  • 5 of 5

After a long days travelling with two children we had a friendly welcome and felt instantly relaxed. This was our first visit to L'ecurie; Jason and Annette are excellent hosts. The gite is spacious and outside areas well maintained. We swam everyday in the lovely pool which was the highlight for our daughter. This is a great location, the village is quite but you are a short drive to shops and choice of wonderful beaches.

We are planning a return visit.

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed yourselves! Yes, the pool is always popular with the children staying at our two Holiday homes. We try to keep it heated to 28 degrees and there are usually lots of toys to play with in the pool. Hope to see you again!

A Great Holiday Experiance

  • 5 of 5

we would highly recommend a stay at l"Ecurie, not only was the accommodation first class, comfortable, spacious and well equipped, we thoroughly enjoyed the peaceful and beautiful setting of the property and the many facilities it offered. the large swimming pool and well stocked play Barn for all ages was a great addition. our hosts Annette & Jason however make this property the best we have ever stayed in over many years of visiting France. they were very welcoming & helpful throughout our stay, we all enjoyed their company & chats immensely and were very sad to say goodbye at the end of our holiday. Thank you Annette & Jason, hope to see you again soon!

A most relaxing holiday

  • 5 of 5

The formalities first. The gite is exactly as described on Annette and Jason's webiste. Clean, well equipped and well maintained. It's spacious and comfortable. We would certainly recommend it to anyone staying in this area.

Annette and Jason are hospitable, knowledgeable and approachable. Hard to imagine better hosts.

Outside the actual accommodation there's a pretty well equipped games room for kids, a gym (which I did NOT use !!) and an excellent pool. The pool was enjoyed enormously by my granddaughter who played with the many toys that were provided.

The location is very quiet and very relaxing and 'staying in' for the day is very relaxing. There are many interesting places/locations around but it has to be said that they are all a bit of a drive - but, again, the website is perfectly honest and clear about that.

Locally there's a restaurant called "Au Fil des Saisons" that we recommend. It's close to 'fine dining' - much above the typical French local restaurant and it won't break the bank either. When I asked for a wine recommendation I was amazed to be recommended the cheapest on the list - and it was delicious as well.

If you eat in La Rochelle be aware that you will probably double the price by eating in one of the places that overlook the harbour. Restaurants a bit further back in the surrounding streets are MUCH cheaper - but of course it's up to you if you want the ambience of the harbour.

From the Owner

We were living in Jersey and decided that it was time for a change! So, having visited France several times on holiday, we thought that we'd take the huge step of moving over here and setting up a business. The Lairoux area is great - close to a wide variety of fantastic beaches and not far from La Rochelle, La Roche sur Yon or Nantes airport. Luçon is only a short drive away and here you will find many supermarkets, bars and restaurants. The village is very peaceful - with a few fêtes and celebrations throughout the year. The surrounding countryside is great for walking and cycling and there is a great variety of wildlife to be seen throughout the year. We have some unusual migratory birds that visit the flooded winter wetlands nearby.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : La Rochelle at 45 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : Lucon at 10 Kilometres Nearest Ferry : St Malo at 300 Kilometres Nearest Golf : La Domangere at 30 Kilometres Nearest Train : Lucon at 10 Kilometres Nearest Motorway : Junction 6, A83 at 25 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Lucon at 10 Kilometres Nearest Beach : La Faute sur Mer at 15 Kilometres Car: necessary

The beaches of the southern Vendée are only a 15 minute drive away. The closest are at La Faute sur Mer and La Tranche sur Mer – both with long sandy beaches, ideal for families and with lots of cafes, shops and restaurants nearby. If you like surfing, then head to Les Conches or La Terrière beaches – both are great for body boarding, surfing and big waves! At La Veillon beach you can watch kite surfers or have a wander around the marina and stop off at the weekly Wednesday evening market to buy local crafts and souvenirs.

Our village is approximately 1 hour from Nantes airport and 45 minutes from La Rochelle Airport - both of which are served by budget airlines such as Ryanair, Jet2 and EasyJet. Car hire is available.

The ferry ports of Northern France start from only 3.5 hours away. St Malo is the closest and is served by both Brittany Ferries and Condor Ferries. Caen is 5 hours, Cherbourg is 5.5 hours, Le Havre is 6 hours and Calais with its ferries and Euro Tunnel is only 6.5 hours away.

Maison Lairoux is only a 10 minute drive to Luçon with its many supermarkets, restaurants, banks, cafés and entertainment. There is a lovely central park with children’s play area and band stand, and the impressive cathedral in the centre is worth a visit.

La Rochelle is only 40 minutes away - with its aquarium, harbour side restaurants and lots of boutiques and shops – great evening entertainment every night around the pedestrianised harbour area! The nearby ile de Ré is a good day out – with lots of pretty villages, markets and harbours. It is also very flat, so is good for cycling and walking and has many windswept beaches to relax on.

The famous Puy du Fou Historical Theme Park is only an hour away. This is a must-see for the area – with Gladiators, Medieval Knights, Musketeers and Vikings – not to mention the best bird of prey show ever! This is a full day out and includes a spectacular finale with an amazing Sound and Light show featuring over 1000 participants.

The Futuroscope Theme Park near Poitiers is also only a 90-minute drive away and here you can experience the world of 3D cinema and exciting virtual reality rides. A great day out and fun for all the family.

For a more tranquil day out, the Marais Poitevin is only 60 mins away. Here you will find the famous ‘Venise Verte’ with its miles of canals and waterways. A great place to stop off is Maillezais where you can hire a boat before wandering around the ruined abbey.

The Vendée has a well-kept secret - lots of locally produced wines that are great for drinking now! We are only minutes away from the Fief Vendéen wine route which starts in the pretty town of Mareuil sur Lay and wine tasting afternoons can be arranged with some of the local wine producers.

For those looking for more leisurely activities, there are some fantastic country walks, bird watching facilities and prehistoric monuments to explore all within half an hour of Lairoux. If you like birdwatching, then visit in early spring, when the Marais is flooded and the area is filled with migratory birds – we even provide the binoculars!

There are also many other tourist attractions in the area - such as The Indian Forest Adventure Park where you can sail through the trees on zip wires, The Lotus Lake and Parc Floral at St Cyr, The Adventure Château with its treasure trail at Avrille and the Valley de Yon – great for picnics and walks through the forest.

From the Owner

L'Ecurie Holiday Home is set in a quiet location, but is not remote - we are in the centre of the village, but in a little side road - so there is no passing traffic. We have stunning views from the gardens towards the Marais (wetlands) and in winter the scenery changes dramatically as the Marais floods and we have a giant lake at the bottom of the garden! The house is in an ideal location for visiting the coast with its many beaches and seaside towns. It's nice to be able to visit the coast - but just as nice to step away from the hustle and bustle and relax in the gardens - sipping a glass of local wine whilst sitting next to the pool!
