Description

'L'ECURIE' - 1 of 4 spacious, fully equipped & well furnished gites

L'Ecurie is a 2 bedroom farmhouse cottage that sleeps 5 - 6 guests. Although not as large as the other two gites available at Les Capucines, guests have been very pleasantly surprised by the amount of space L'Ecurie has to offer.

L'Ecurie consists of a spacious lounge and dining room with a well-equipped kitchen. Upstairs, there are two bedrooms - one good sized double room with king-size bed and one very large room with up to 4 single beds, which can be converted to a large double bedroom if preferred.

Both bedrooms overlook the beautiful front gardens and the gorgeous countryside beyond.

The bathroom with bath, shower and toilet is situated conveniently between the bedrooms.

L'Ecurie has it's own private flower filled courtyard which includes a large table, chairs, an umbrella and a BBQ ready to fire up. It also has views over the beautiful tranquil and manicured gardens at the front of the property

This unique property, which is built on the site of an old Roman encampment, is set in a tranquil but not isolated location, on the edge of a quiet hamlet of just 15 houses.

Les Capucines is surrounded by lush countryside, fields of sunflowers and is a short distance to shops, restaurants, cafes and facilities as well as being only 20 minutes from the nearest sandy beach.

Being so centrally located, there is an enormous variety of activities and places to visit within easy reach...

To the west, the gorgeous Atlantic beaches are right on the doorstep as well as the historic old seaport of La Rochelle and the glamorous islands of Ile de Re, Oleron and Aix.

To the east are the beautiful towns along the Charente river, including the historic old towns of Saintes and Cognac.

A short drive to the north, is the Loire Valley with its magnificent Chateaux

To the south, there are the beautiful rolling hills of the Dordogne as well as the vineyards of Bordeaux.

So whether you go north, south, east or west - and everywhere in between - there is just so much for the whole family to do and see whilst on holiday at Les Capucines!

If you feel more like relaxing, there is a very large terraced swimming pool which is bathed in sunshine from dawn to dusk and surrounded by mature, well laid out gardens.

In addition each farmhouse cottage has its own barbecue (ready to fire up) as well as table and chairs for 'alfresco' dining.

Facilities include a large under cover games area with table tennis, table football, magnetic darts and a selection of bicycles for local use.

There is also a guest store-room with an extensive DVD library, boules, footballs, a cricket set, inflatables (plus pump), tennis & badminton racquets as well as lounge cushions and umbrellas for the pool.

Near the pool is a popular kids play area which has a slide, sandpit, picnic table, swings and a ride-on tractor to keep the little ones occupied.

In addition to the large areas of manicured and private gardens there is also a communal 'veggie patch' for guests to help themselves to tomatoes, courgettes, peppers, lettuce, strawberries, blackberries, basil and mint and whatever else is available at the time.

New to Les Capucines is an in-room massage facility (with a fully trained masseuse) which will be available for guests after long drives, bike rides, walks, swims or just because they feel like being pampered!

So whatever you and your family and friends are looking for in a French holiday, Les Capucines can deliver - and so much more!

About Mark Henderson

We are from Sydney, Australia and have visited France regularly over the years. When the opportunity arose for both of us to change our careers, we decided to come to France and combine our love of all things French with being able to offer the perfect setting for others to enjoy a wonderful holiday.

There is nothing we love more than seeing the expressions on guests' faces when they arrive at Les Capucines as it really is very difficult to convey the luxury and spaciousness of the property with only limited website photos! "The photos and website don't do it justice" is a phrase we so often hear.

We certainly aim to over deliver, which we believe is the best way not only to ensure guests return but also have them tell their friends about their great holiday experience.

Mark Henderson purchased this farmhouse in 2014

Why Mark Henderson chose Charente-Maritime

When my wife and I were looking for a gite property in 2013 we visited over 25 different complexes all over France. Les Capucines was by far the most luxurious, well equipped and most centrally located property that we visited.

The Charente Maritime area of France is the second sunniest (after the Cote d'Azur) as well as being extremely attractive, relatively undiscovered and unspoilt. The range of activities are many and varied and there are so many things to see and do whether you are young or old, active or more relaxed.

There are a number of fabulous places to visit - ranging from sandy beaches, to historical towns, to rolling countryside and vineyards.

The Charente Maritime is also home to some great local produce - in particular, oysters and shellfish, mussels, Cognac, Pineau Charente, cheese and wine.

Les Capucines, is a beautiful old 18th century Charentaise farmhouse which has been lovingly restored and converted into our summer home & luxury holiday property.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Les Capucines is easy to reach by air, sea or road, with most of the budget airlines now flying to La Rochelle from just about everywhere in the UK, and is centrally located to so many places and activities.

From the golden beaches of the Atlantic 20 minutes to the west, the historic old towns and villages along the Charente river to the east, to the Chateaux of the Loire to the north as well as the rolling countryside of the Dordogne and the vineyards of Bordeaux to the south ... plus everywhere in between!

There is just so much to do for the whole family when you holiday at Les Capucines.

Everything is provided for that perfect relaxing holiday, including in-room massage and 'starter supplies' for your cottage when you first arrive...you really only need to bring your clothes and good company!

Les Capucines has continually built a strong following of guests who have come back year after year, some of whom are now seen more as friends than guests.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We stayed in L'Ecurie which was welcoming from the start, so well equipped and homely. We had 6 continuous days of glorious sunshine, having driven from the UK and arriving late on the 13th we were soon revived with our hosts' welcome and home comforts.

We particularly loved Ile de Re ... very chic! The morning and evening light is superb and there were many very starry nights. Sad to leave, the region is so lovely, but I'm sure we will return.

Les Capucines is surrounded by lush countryside, fields of sunflowers and is a short distance to local shops and facilities, including 2 fabulous restaurants, one for the whole family (with a kids menu) and one amazing 'silver service' catering for more adult tastes.

Only 10 minutes drive away, there is a very large supermarket where virtually everything is available ... even on a Sunday morning during the summer season!

For those that prefer buying their produce direct and enjoy the colour and buzz of the 'market experience', there are markets on virtually every day somewhere in the area where you can purchase great quality fresh vegetables, fruit, seafood and many other local delicacies.

Also, with Les Capucines being so centrally located, there is an enormous variety of activities and places to visit within easy reach...

To the west, the golden sandy Atlantic beaches are only 20 minutes away, as well as the historic old seaport of La Rochelle and the glamorous islands of Ile de Re, Oleron and Aix.

Special interest holidays...

The Charente Maritime area is particularly suited to cycling for all ages and ability. There are a number of very scenic cycle tracks available not only locally but also further afield in idyllic settings such as the unique island of Ile de Re, which caters specifically for family cyclists.

Some standard bikes are available for use in the local area, free of charge. More professional bicycles are also available for hire which can be booked in advance and delivered straight to your door!

The local marshlands are the perfect place for naturalists and birdwatchers alike to spot an amazing variety of flora and fauna, right on the door step.

The scenic countryside all around Les Capucines is also fantastic for long and short walks or more serious hiking.

So there is no excuse not to take in the fresh countryside air and perhaps enjoy a soothing in-room massage, from a fully trained masseuse, on your return?

Being located in such a diverse and interesting area as the Charente Maritime, Les Capucines is the perfect location for family and friends to enjoy an active or more relaxed holiday together, without the crowds and expense that have spoiled the more 'touristy' areas of France!

Perfect choice for relaxing group holiday.

  • 5 of 5

We hired all 3 gîtes for our extended family (including 9 children who ranged between 1 and 17 years old) to celebrate my mother's forthcoming 70th birthday and we had a wonderful holiday that exceeded expectations.

My husband, 3 kids and I were in L'Ecurie but all 3 gîtes shared the same high standard of maintenance and were extremely well equipped. The only negative is that the stairs are steep in l'Ecurie and the kids' beds squeaked when they turned over. Other than that, mattresses and pillows were very comfortable and nothing (towels, crockery, glasses, cutlery) had been skimped on quality.

The kids had the run of the gardens and played hide and seek, football on the front grass plus of course using the facilities provided: table tennis, table football, badminton etc. The pool was the focal point on many days and when the weather was good, we often stayed put to enjoy the facilities.

Mark and Margy live on site and manage to successfully walk the line between going about their business maintaining houses and gardens and leaving their guests in peace to get on with their holiday. They are nice folk and it was useful to have them around for any snag or to ask advice on a local issue (like where to park in any given place) or just to chat to. Margy's massages come highly recommended!

The local vicinity is very rural (it reminded us of rural Lincolnshire) and La Pilette a hamlet so you have to be prepared to get in the car to go get bread or indeed anything. We mainly shopped at Lidl (as you enter Rochefort) and SuperU (Tonnay Charente- bit closer but more expensive). We took advantage of the quiet lanes from the gîtes for many walks with the kids where we picked blackberries, sloes (brought home to make sloe gin!) and spotted wildlife such as storks, birds of prey and coypu. It is perfect for cycling too as mainly flattish. Although it is a seaside area, there is much more to do and see than just the beach and we had day trips to La Rochelle, l'Île de Ré, l'île d'Oléron, Saintes, Brouage, Cognac, Fouras and nearby Rochefort.

I would recommend Las Capucines unreservedly, particularly if you are hiring out the whole for a larger group.

A perfect cycling holiday…we’ll be back!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at Les Capucines. What can we say other than – it’s perfect. The standard of accommodation is of the highest quality and the hosts Mark and Margy are so helpful you instantly feel as if you are staying with friends. The gites are extremely well resourced for a self-catering holiday with everything provided (including basic kitchen items such as cling film and tin foil!), dishwasher, washing machine and even pegs to hang out your washing if you need! The pool and gardens are a lovely place to relax with ample sunbeds, tables, chairs, umbrellas etc.

Staying at Les Capucines is a perfect place to stay as a base for a cycling holiday (easy to medium difficulty). With a local bike hire company that hires out cycles at a very reasonable rate. The cycle shop owner even delivered our bikes to Les Capucines at no extra charge, nothing could have been simpler. He even came and collected the bike at the end of our holiday!

Over the week we cycled almost 200 miles and there were cycle routes everywhere! All the routes were clearly sign posted and we felt very safe and never in any danger.

Les Capucines also caters really well for non-cyclists, as it is located in an area surrounded by many beaches with lots of places to visit.

We find this a perfect place to stay and would more than highly recommend it – we will most certainly be retuning next year for our 3rd visit!

A lovely well equipped gite in a nice location.

  • 5 of 5

We have just had a lovely 9 nights in L'Ecurie, a spacious 2 bedroomed gite. There was only 2 of us, but there was plenty of space for 4. The gite had everything you could need and the courtyard out the front door is lovely for eating. There are garden areas available, as well as the games area, great for families with young children. The swimming pool is a good size with plenty of sunbeds with cushions and umbrellas. Best of all are the hosts Mark & Margy, very welcoming, helpful and great with suggestions of places to visit and eat. September is a lovely time to visit, a nice temperature and easy to visit the area without any traffic.

A fantastic home-from-home!

  • 5 of 5

Our two-bedroom property was comfortably furnished and well equipped. The vase of cheery sunflowers, fridge essentials and comprehensive file of advice and recommendations which Mark and Margy had provided were extremely welcome after a very long journey and typified the level of care and attention to detail we enjoyed during our fortnight at L'Ecurie. Mark and Margy were enthusiastic and knowledgeable about local attractions and we had a very enjoyable morning at the bustling market at Fouras as a result. There are plenty of places to visit if you're that way inclined but we spent much of our time in, and around, the pool soaking up the sunshine and relaxing. There are also good beaches nearby, although we travelled further afield (La Tremblade) in search of surf. The 'icing on the cake' for one lucky family member was the massage she received from Margy; a qualified masseuse. If you are a large family party, as we were, the three gites are ideal - we accommodated 16. We all had a fantastic time and would highly recommend all three properties to prospective holidaymakers.

Très confortable

  • 5 of 5

Mark and Margy, our hosts, provided a warm welcome. They accommodated an early evening arrival by shopping on our behalf so that we had everything we needed without any hassle. They were always willing to provide any assistance and the gite was well equipped. The property was an ideal taste of rustic charm with the luxury of modern day essentials.

The perfect place to relax!

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking to find the perfect spot to drop out of the rat race for a week of two then Les Capucines is the place for you. A peaceful spot which is what we were looking for as 3 adults but if there are children about you are ideally not too far from the major attractions in this lovely area of the Charente-Maritime. Beaches and amusements, shops and restaurants are no more than a short drive away.

Our gite, L'Ecurie, was very comfortable, spotless and very well equipped - a home from home in every way. We really liked the outside seating arrangement and made good use of it on the lovely warm evenings. The pool was brilliant and much utilized.

Mark and Margy were attentive but unobtrusive hosts and their restaurant suggestions were spot on.

We are regular visitors to South West France and will most definitely make a return visit to Les Capucines - one week was not enough!
