Being so centrally located, there is an enormous variety of activities and places to visit within easy reach...

To the west, the gorgeous Atlantic beaches are right on the doorstep as well as the historic old seaport of La Rochelle and the glamorous islands of Ile de Re, Oleron and Aix.

To the east are the beautiful towns along the Charente river, including the historic old towns of Saintes and Cognac.

A short drive to the north, is the Loire Valley with its magnificent Chateaux

To the south, there are the beautiful rolling hills of the Dordogne as well as the vineyards of Bordeaux.

So whether you go north, south, east or west - and everywhere in between - there is just so much for the whole family to do and see whilst on holiday at Les Capucines!

If you feel more like relaxing, there is a very large terraced swimming pool which is bathed in sunshine from dawn to dusk and surrounded by mature, well laid out gardens.

In addition each farmhouse cottage has its own barbecue (ready to fire up) as well as table and chairs for 'alfresco' dining.

Near the pool is a popular kids play area which has a slide, sandpit, picnic table, swings and a ride-on tractor to keep the little ones occupied.

In addition to the large areas of manicured and private gardens there is also a communal 'veggie patch' for guests to help themselves to tomatoes, courgettes, peppers, lettuce, strawberries, blackberries, basil and mint and whatever else is available at the time.

New to Les Capucines is an in-room massage facility (with a fully trained masseuse) which will be available for guests after long drives, bike rides, walks, swims or just because they feel like being pampered!

So whatever you and your family and friends are looking for in a French holiday, Les Capucines can deliver - and so much more!

About Mark Henderson

We are from Sydney, Australia and have visited France regularly over the years. When the opportunity arose for both of us to change our careers, we decided to come to France and combine our love of all things French with being able to offer the perfect setting for others to enjoy a wonderful holiday.

There is nothing we love more than seeing the expressions on guests' faces when they arrive at Les Capucines as it really is very difficult to convey the luxury and spaciousness of the property with only limited website photos! "The photos and website don't do it justice" is a phrase we so often hear.

We certainly aim to over deliver, which we believe is the best way not only to ensure guests return but also have them tell their friends about their great holiday experience.

Mark Henderson purchased this farmhouse in 2014

Why Mark Henderson chose Charente-Maritime

When my wife and I were looking for a gite property in 2013 we visited over 25 different complexes all over France. Les Capucines was by far the most luxurious, well equipped and most centrally located property that we visited.

The Charente Maritime area of France is the second sunniest (after the Cote d'Azur) as well as being extremely attractive, relatively undiscovered and unspoilt. The range of activities are many and varied and there are so many things to see and do whether you are young or old, active or more relaxed.

There are a number of fabulous places to visit - ranging from sandy beaches, to historical towns, to rolling countryside and vineyards.

The Charente Maritime is also home to some great local produce - in particular, oysters and shellfish, mussels, Cognac, Pineau Charente, cheese and wine.

Les Capucines, is a beautiful old 18th century Charentaise farmhouse which has been lovingly restored and converted into our summer home & luxury holiday property.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Les Capucines is easy to reach by air, sea or road, with most of the budget airlines now flying to La Rochelle from just about everywhere in the UK, and is centrally located to so many places and activities.

From the golden beaches of the Atlantic 20 minutes to the west, the historic old towns and villages along the Charente river to the east, to the Chateaux of the Loire to the north as well as the rolling countryside of the Dordogne and the vineyards of Bordeaux to the south ... plus everywhere in between!

There is just so much to do for the whole family when you holiday at Les Capucines.

Everything is provided for that perfect relaxing holiday, including in-room massage and 'starter supplies' for your cottage when you first arrive...you really only need to bring your clothes and good company!

Les Capucines has continually built a strong following of guests who have come back year after year, some of whom are now seen more as friends than guests.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The very best of luck in your new venture Mark & Margy and thank you both so much for such a warm welcoming stay at Les Capucines. We loved just about everything - including the fabulous thunderstorm on our last night.

We would sincerely love to come back and stay in this beautiful part of France.

Best regards

Best holiday ever!

  • 5 of 5

This property is something really special. The accommodation is beautiful, with every little detail and need catered for. The grounds and pool are both immaculate and spacious. The location is super; rural for the peace and yet so many wonderful places to explore not too far away. One of the best features though are the hosts, Margy and Mark. They are true hosts; not intrusive but very helpful and kind if you need them. Their company enhanced our holiday further and we will remember their low key professionalism and kindness with fondness. Margy's massages are a must too! So all in all, 10/10! We miss you Les Capucines!

Another excellent visit to Les Capucines

  • 5 of 5

This was the second visit to Les Capucines and we were upgraded to a larger Gite. The facilities were excellent and everything we needed, the hosts were on hand if we required any local information.

Our 10 year old son was very happy playing in the pool and using the table tennis table as well as the darts board in the play area.

It is a very good location for visiting La Rochelle and Rochefort. Ile De Re for cycling was great and only an hour away.

Perfect for large groups of family and friends!

  • 5 of 5

Les Capucines is a perfect place for a large group of family and friends with a very spacious and sunny terraced pool. Nothing is too much trouble for Mark and Margy who are there to ensure that you have a great holiday with invaluable advice on where to go and where to eat.

The beds are comfortable and are configured to suit any combination of young and old as well as singles or couples. The bedrooms are full of character with high ceilings, exposed stone and wooden beams.

Tables are arranged for everyone to eat together - either alfresco, undercover or inside plus each gite has its own kitchen and lounge if you need a break from the group from time to time.

Gardens are beautifully manicured and great for all sorts of games and activities such as badminton, cricket and boules.

Difficult to find fault with anything at Les Capucines and the only down side being that 14 days is not long enough to see everything in this amazing area of France.

The Charente Maritime really is an undiscovered and beautiful part of France and Les Capucines is a fantastic base from which to see it all...a

place where you want to return to again and again!

A great week

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at Les Capucines after a very busy week of Watersports in the South of France and we had the most wonderfully relaxing week. Mark and Margy are fantastic hosts. La Grange is extremely comfortable and well equipped. We loved the private garden with BBQ , the gorgeous shared pool with its sunny terrace and there is plenty to see and do in the area. Everything was extremely well organised and clean and we would certainly come back!

A fabulous holiday location

  • 5 of 5

La Grange was everything we were expecting and more, the gite contained every creature comfort you could wish for and more! The kitchen is very well equipped. It was very clean and extremely well maintained, perfect for our family, 3 adults and two teenage children. It was lovely to be staying somewhere where the beds were so comfortable with lovely crisp sheets. Outside the gite is a lovely garden with BBQ and table and chairs.

We particularly enjoyed the pool, it's kept very clean, it is within a walled and securely gated area, there is a lovely terraced area with sun loungers, the temperature was 28*c everyday. Nearby is a shady area for those who wish to keep out of the sun but still enjoy the pool. Kept near to the pool are inflatable toys, cushions for the sun loungers and sun umbrellas.

We visited Ille De Re, the island has some beautiful villages and delicious ice creams. Rochefort, shopping and sightseeing, we enjoyed a lovely meal at La Cap Nell over looking the mariner. We had a day at Futuroscope which was great fun, as with all parks it involved a lot of walking and queuing (we discovered that you can use Tesco vouchers for Furturoscope). Fouras is a small town with lovely shops and cafes.

Each day we visited the bakery in Lussant, only a 5 minute drive away, lovely bread and delicious sweet and savoury pastries.

We had a fabulous holiday, Mark and Margy were wonderful hosts, we will return next year and will most certainly be recommending Les Capucines to our family and friends.

Les Capucines is surrounded by lush countryside, fields of sunflowers and is a short distance to local shops and facilities, including 2 fabulous restaurants, one for the whole family (with a kids menu) and one amazing 'silver service' catering for more adult tastes.

Only 10 minutes drive away, there is a very large supermarket where virtually everything is available ... even on a Sunday morning during the summer season!

For those that prefer buying their produce direct and enjoy the colour and buzz of the 'market experience', there are markets on virtually every day somewhere in the area where you can purchase great quality fresh vegetables, fruit, seafood and many other local delicacies.

Also, with Les Capucines being so centrally located, there is an enormous variety of activities and places to visit within easy reach...

To the west, the golden sandy Atlantic beaches are only 20 minutes away, as well as the historic old seaport of La Rochelle and the glamorous islands of Ile de Re, Oleron and Aix.

To the east are the beautiful towns and villages along the majestic Charente river, including the historic old towns of Saintes and Cognac.

A short drive to the north, is the Loire Valley with its magnificent Chateaux

To the south, there are the beautiful rolling countryside of the Dordogne as well as the vineyards of Bordeaux.

So whether you go north, south, east or west - and everywhere in between - there is just so much for the whole family to do and see whilst on holiday at Les Capucines!

Special interest holidays...

The Charente Maritime area is particularly suited to cycling for all ages and ability. There are a number of very scenic cycle tracks available not only locally but also further afield in idyllic settings such as the unique island of Ile de Re, which caters specifically for family cyclists.

Some standard bikes are available for use in the local area, free of charge. More professional bicycles are also available for hire which can be booked in advance and delivered straight to your door!

The local marshlands are the perfect place for naturalists and birdwatchers alike to spot an amazing variety of flora and fauna, right on the door step.

The scenic countryside all around Les Capucines is also fantastic for long and short walks or more serious hiking.

So there is no excuse not to take in the fresh countryside air and perhaps enjoy a soothing in-room massage, from a fully trained masseuse, on your return?

Being located in such a diverse and interesting area as the Charente Maritime, Les Capucines is the perfect location for family and friends to enjoy an active or more relaxed holiday together, without the crowds and expense that have spoiled the more 'touristy' areas of France!
