This unique property, which is built on the site of an old Roman encampment, is set in a tranquil but not isolated location, on the edge of a quiet hamlet of just 15 houses.
Les Capucines is surrounded by lush countryside, fields of sunflowers and is a short distance to shops, restaurants, cafes and facilities as well as being only 20 minutes from the nearest sandy beach.
Being so centrally located, there is an enormous variety of activities and places to visit within easy reach...
To the west, the gorgeous Atlantic beaches are right on the doorstep as well as the historic old seaport of La Rochelle and the glamorous islands of Ile de Re, Oleron and Aix.
To the east are the beautiful towns along the Charente river, including the historic old towns of Saintes and Cognac.
A short drive to the north, is the Loire Valley with its magnificent Chateaux
To the south, there are the beautiful rolling hills of the Dordogne as well as the vineyards of Bordeaux.
So whether you go north, south, east or west - and everywhere in between - there is just so much for the whole family to do and see whilst on holiday at Les Capucines!
If you feel more like relaxing, there is a very large terraced swimming pool which is bathed in sunshine from dawn to dusk and surrounded by mature, well laid out gardens.
In addition each farmhouse cottage has its own barbecue (ready to fire up) as well as table and chairs for 'alfresco' dining.
Facilities include a large under cover games area with table tennis, table football, magnetic darts and a selection of bicycles for local use.
There is also a guest store-room with an extensive DVD library, boules, footballs, a cricket set, inflatables (plus pump), tennis & badminton racquets as well as lounge cushions and umbrellas for the pool.
Near the pool is a popular kids play area which has a slide, sandpit, picnic table, swings and a ride-on tractor to keep the little ones occupied.
In addition to the large areas of manicured and private gardens there is also a communal 'veggie patch' for guests to help themselves to tomatoes, courgettes, peppers, lettuce, strawberries, blackberries, basil and mint and whatever else is available at the time.
New to Les Capucines is an in-room massage facility (with a fully trained masseuse) which will be available for guests after long drives, bike rides, walks, swims or just because they feel like being pampered!
So whatever you and your family and friends are looking for in a French holiday, Les Capucines can deliver - and so much more!
We are from Sydney, Australia and have visited France regularly over the years. When the opportunity arose for both of us to change our careers, we decided to come to France and combine our love of all things French with being able to offer the perfect setting for others to enjoy a wonderful holiday.
There is nothing we love more than seeing the expressions on guests' faces when they arrive at Les Capucines as it really is very difficult to convey the luxury and spaciousness of the property with only limited website photos! "The photos and website don't do it justice" is a phrase we so often hear.
We certainly aim to over deliver, which we believe is the best way not only to ensure guests return but also have them tell their friends about their great holiday experience.
Mark Henderson purchased this farmhouse in 2014
When my wife and I were looking for a gite property in 2013 we visited over 25 different complexes all over France. Les Capucines was by far the most luxurious, well equipped and most centrally located property that we visited.
The Charente Maritime area of France is the second sunniest (after the Cote d'Azur) as well as being extremely attractive, relatively undiscovered and unspoilt. The range of activities are many and varied and there are so many things to see and do whether you are young or old, active or more relaxed.
There are a number of fabulous places to visit - ranging from sandy beaches, to historical towns, to rolling countryside and vineyards.
The Charente Maritime is also home to some great local produce - in particular, oysters and shellfish, mussels, Cognac, Pineau Charente, cheese and wine.
Les Capucines, is a beautiful old 17th century Charentaise farmhouse which has been lovingly restored and converted into our summer home & luxury holiday property.
Les Capucines is easy to reach by air, sea or road, with most of the budget airlines now flying to La Rochelle from just about everywhere in the UK, and is centrally located to so many places and activities.
From the golden beaches of the Atlantic 20 minutes to the west, the historic old towns and villages along the Charente river to the east, to the Chateaux of the Loire to the north as well as the rolling countryside of the Dordogne and the vineyards of Bordeaux to the south ... plus everywhere in between!
There is just so much to do for the whole family when you holiday at Les Capucines.
Everything is provided for that perfect relaxing holiday, including in-room massage and 'starter supplies' for your cottage when you first arrive...you really only need to bring your clothes and good company!
Les Capucines has continually built a strong following of guests who have come back year after year, some of whom are now seen more as friends than guests.
Brilliant property and lovely pool. We had a great time here. Thanks to Mark and Margy for being such great hosts.
We hired the whole place. It was absolutely perfect for our large group. We stayed in Le Manoir which was beautiful. It was also very well equipped, clean and tidy, safe for kids and perfect for small or large celebrations. There's even cold wine and beer waiting for you in the fridge on arrival. A very welcome touch as it was 30 degrees that afternoon. And that was just typical of the owners Mark and Margy who were the perfect hosts.
We were there to celebrate a few birthdays so it was a good mix of adults and kids. The kids loved it.
I can't recommend this place enough. We had a wonderful holiday and it's one that'll stick in the memory bank for years to come.
This was our second year at Les Capucines, it is absolutely delightful, every home comfort and more, Le Manoir is very spacious we were a party of eight and we had more than enough room, the gite was very clean with beautiful crisp linen sheets on the beds and lovely fluffy towels. Plenty of cutlery and crockery, cooking utensils etc. we catered for 15 people one evening.
The grounds are lovely and well maintained, the pool area is perfect, plenty of sun loungers, toys and floats etc. There's also a sheltered area to sit if you want to stay out of the sun for a while.
The small village is quiet, this suits us as we have very busy lives, the bakers is a five minute drive away and is fabulous, the nearest supermarket is 15 mins, a large store, it had everything we needed.
In the gite is information on local attractions and restaurants. We had lovely days out, visiting many of the local smaller villages as well as Rochefort, La Rochelle and St Martins de Re. All of which we highly recommend.
Mark and Margy are fabulous hosts, they make you feel so welcome and are on hand should you have any queries.
Les Capucines is our favourite holiday destination, a real home from home and we hope to be back next year.
Stayed with my whole family (occupying all three properties) for two fantastic weeks. Fantastic houses, pool and grounds and Mark and Margy were brilliant hosts. All the little extras, including all Margy's signs, were a brilliant addition. For my family, the pool, the table tennis, badminton and table football were very much appreciated. For my son he especially enjoyed working his way through some old favourites in the DVD selection. We can't wait to return again. Weather was glorious and we had some great days out. Thanks Margy for the recommendation for the teenage girl's shopping expedition - they came back laden down with bags!!
This was our fourth stay and we genuinely intend for there to be a fifth.
We stayed in L'ecurie which is ideal for a family. Two generous bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs with open plan diner and lounge downstairs. UK Freesat TV and complimentary WiFi complete a very well appointed and comfortable gite. The gite also benefits from an enclosed patio with large table and barbecue. A lovely pool, grounds and a games barn also add to the attraction.
Beaches, La Rochelle, Isle de Re are close at hand and the local supermarket is only 20mins drive.
We cannot recommend the property and owners, Mark and Margy highly enough.
Lovely old farmhouse. Great location with access to Ile de Re, La Rochelle and Saintes. Very clean and well maintained. Mark and Margy are great hosts. Highly recommended.
We stayed in the Manor house which was beautifully maintained and comfortable. Sleeping with the windows open in the peaceful French country side was a joy and for those who just want to relax and chill it would be quite possible to go nowhere for a week whilst enjoying all the amenities of Les Capucines.
The nearby towns and villages were lovely places to explore and full of history and very picturesque. It would be easy to spend a day in each of Saintes, Rochfort and La Rochelle simply wandering around and exploring and slightly further afield we enjoyed great days out to Ile de Re and St Emillion.
You will need a car to get around as the nearest shops are a couple of miles away.
The owners are on site and could not have been more accommodating.
