About the property

Cottage in Lerryn, Fowey Cornwall, England - Idyllic relaxing Location, direct riverside views, Swimming, Walking, kayaking, Pub, Village Shop

Pentye is a recently converted former boat store/ shed, with lots of luxury touches. It is tucked in beside the wall of an old lime Kiln, right on the banks of the river Lerryn. There is a little balcony with table and chairs for sitting out and watching the tides ebb and flow. You can kayak or even swim straight from the lawn at high tide. At lower tides you can park on the small lane right outside, which runs alongside the river's edge. There are fantastic walks straight from the door, a booklet in the house lists lots of riverside circular walks. The ancient woodland just along from the house was said to be the inspiration for Kenneth Grahame's book 'Wind in the Willows'. You can hire kayaks from Golant who will deliver them and kayak from the house to St Winnow, Fowey or Lostwithiel, or simply mess about on the river and take a picnic for the day. It is ideal for artists and bird watching Alternatively Fowey is about 15 mins by car via the Boddinick ferry. There is a good local shop within a few steps of the house, which sells wine, beer, local cider, take away pasties and a wide range of groceries, so no need to leave if you don't want to. There is also a pub in Lerryn which has great cornish beer on draught and they do a fab bowl of Fowey mussels and chips, they can also rustle up take away fish and chips. The ancient town of Lostwithiel is 3 miles away which has lots of wonderful antique shops, cafes, pubs and a small supermarket. The Duchy Nursery is just outside Lostwithiel with an excellent range of plants and a really well worth visiting cafe, with delicious food. The Eden Project is only 8 miles, The National Trust's Lanhydrock House and the fishing villages of Looe and Polperro a short drive.

There are many good food places to eat out in Cornwall from the nearby Sam's on the beach at Polkerris to a bit further afield for Rick Stein's and Paul Ainsworth's in Padstow. you wont be much to do and see!

All crisp white bed linen and towels, Nespresso coffee machine, coffee, tea and a pint of milk and even a bottle of wine provided, internet t.v. Echo Dot for radio/ music and wif fi also included

About Michele Legg

I was born and brought up in Devon right on the border with Cornwall, so seem to know Cornwall better than Devon. My parents were both from Devon and my grandparents were Cornish. I kept meaning to explore and live elsewhere but never seemed to get around to it, but as you get older you realise what a beautiful area of the U.K Devon & Cornwall are...although obviously not ruling out that there are many other beautiful places too ! I live with my husband Nick and daughter Milly and a motley crew of pets on Dartmoor. Our son Elliot now lives in London and visits as often as he can both Devon & Cornwall. We run a food business on Dartmoor and are currently writing a cook book ..

Michele Legg purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Michele Legg chose Saint Veep

Lerrryn is a creekside village just off the main Fowey river and a bit of a hidden gem. Easily accessible, but it seems far from the madding crowds. Good for beaches too on the North coast as well as the South coast. We already knew the area quite well as we were both brought up in Plymouth right on the border of Cornwall and less than an hour from the Tamar Bridge. When we saw this little bijoux property right on the banks of the river, we thought it would make a great retreat to enjoy river and coastal Cornish life. We also thought it would be a sensible investment for our children's futures.

What makes this cottage unique

We love swimming in the river directly from the lawn ( even if a bit muddy !) in front of the house and kayaking . The walks straight from the house are beautiful and the changing seasons of the woodlands close by. We also enjoy having a pub and shop in walking distance, so we don't have to go anywhere if we don't want to, just stay here and watch the river, the birds and the tides.

We'd buy this place if it came on the market (and we had the money)!

Pentye is the perfect peaceful/romantic retreat. The cottage is beautifully decorated and very well equipped. The view out of the window is mesmerising and constantly changing as the tide ebbs and flows (it's part of the estuary). We spent hours just watching the water and birds.

We also fell in love with the village of Lerryn which is tiny but has everything you need -

a pub which serves excellent food and ale and a small but well-stocked shop.

The owner, Michelle, is also very helpful and friendly.

A romantic place for two

  • 5 of 5

Situated overlooking the river the view is wonderful. Quiet and peaceful retreat with lovely walks all around. There is not much (if any) mobile signal but the WiFi is great for all the usual checking emails, FaceTime, Facebook etc if you need it. There is also a landline telephone provided on an honesty basis.

Downstairs is a well equipped kitchen with a dining table with a view out to the river. There is also a sofa and tv. The shower and toilet are located in a wet room on the ground floor. All equipment and facilities worked without problem.

The bedroom is up a spiral staircase to a mezzanine. It light and airy with a Velux window. The bed is very comfortable with beautiful linen. There is also a tv in the bedroom.

Although we never met our hosts they were incredibly helpful when our plans changed. Our damage deposit was refunded promptly.

We also really appreciated the wine & milk in the fridge and a packet of biscuits, many thanks it was a really nice welcome.

Oh one last thing listen to the owners warning about high tides (above 5 metres) as the road outside floods as does the car park. There is safe parking outside the village hall. There is a footpath at the rear of the property if you need it.

There is a small shop in the village as well as a pub which serves decent food.

All and all a wonderful stay, a pity the weather wasn’t kinder but we hope to return perhaps later in the year.

Paul & Gill

We stayed here for 4 days which was not enough to do everything that we wanted to do.The weather was beautiful and the house very clean with very tasteful little extras. The bed was comfortable and the linen lovely and light. The terrace and outside chairs were used every day and the local people are very friendly especially in the shop which is just around the corner.

Well kept, beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

Clean and compact it's just right for a couple, worked well for us with our baby too but we will need to go elsewhere when they're toddling! Beautiful spot for wild swimming and paddle boarding locally on the river and for walks. Upstairs can get a bit warm so a fan would be recommended :) we had a lovely stay :)

Owner's Response: Thanks Ruth for your very kind words so glad you managed to have a relaxing break with your baby, and do some wild swimming and paddle boarding, Lerryn is perfect for that. You certainly had the weather, a heatwave in the mid 20' lucky and wonderful for you. I may well get a fan, although have never needed one before and pop it in the cupboard, in case of another heatwave, but heatwaves like the week you had are sadly such a rarity in Cornwall. Very best wishes Michele & Nick
