Beautiful Cottage in Lozay, St Jean d'Angely, Charente Maritime, France - Peaceful Location With Easy Access To Towns Airports Beaches And All Major Attractions

Our holiday cottage / gite is situated in Puy Bardon on the edge of the village of Lozay in the department of Charente-Maritime.

Lozay is in south-western France region of Poitou-Charentes, why not come and stay with us and become Lozéens. We are within the Canton of Loulay, itself integrated with the Country of Vals de Saintonge in the northeast of the Charente-Maritime a land of stone and water which Lozay is perfectly representative.

The Charente-Maritime region has a climate second only to the South of France. The micro climate means that we enjoy mild winters and warm, sunny summers making it the ideal holiday destination.

Our cottage has two bedrooms with permanent sleeping for four people, wardrobes and drawers to store all your belongings, we also provide a double sofa bed downstairs to sleep up to six people. If you like the outdoors then there is ample room for camping or just sleeping under the stars.

The village is beautiful, peaceful, tranquil and the perfect location to get away from the busy daily life. With only around 150 inhabitants resulting in a population density of 13 people per square kilometre, during the year we are surrounded by corn, sunflower, wheat and rapeseed fields, with a plethora of wildlife including partridges, cuckoos, hares, rabbits, hawks, bats and our four friendly hens Rossi, Lorenzo, Pedrosa and Teekay.

A little bit of history .... The villa Losiacus was mentioned for the first time in 966 by the cartulary of Saint-Jean d'Angely. Until the Middle Ages the town was mostly occupied by woodland. Then, around the year 1000, the Benedictine monks came to clear the woodland and to plant vines. It was at this time that the building of the village took place.

There are many signed walkways and cycle paths around which pass through the village so it's a perfect location for ramblers and cyclists.

Our location is within 2 minutes drive of the town of Loulay which has a bar / restaurant, post office, newsagent, supermarket, butchers, flower shop and two boulangeries as well as a weekly market, outdoor swimming pool and tennis courts. Our nearest large town is St Jean d'Angely (10 minutes by car) in which you will find everything you need with supermarkets that sell all you can get at home and more.

If you wish to spend a day at the seaside then in less than an hour you will be at the beautiful beaches of Royan, Chatelaillon Plage, Saint Palais sur Mer, La Rochelle, La Tremblade and Ile de Re.

The holiday cottage has its own access drive/parking places and sheltered outdoor eating area with a main living/dining/kitchen area, one double, one twin bedroom, shower room and toilet and access to our beautiful 9m x 4 metre heated pool which is bathed in sunshine from first thing in the morning to last thing at night.

We are pleased to welcome couples of all ages or families and, whether you arrive by car, motorbike, push bike, train or camper van you will be made very welcome.

Our gite is available for rental all year round, whether it be for a summer vacation or for someone who is looking to get away from it all for a long winter break, the location is perfect for writing a book, researching the area for historical interests in the Templars for example or whatever is your interest.

My name is Stewart and with my wife Alison we made the permanent move to France early 2014 from the North East of England. We had always planned to move to France, maybe a little later in life but circumstances allowed us to make the move now.

We bought our home as it perfectly matched our desires to live in a village in this part of France with excellent access to all that we require. Having spent all our lives living and working in the city we wanted to change in pace of life and time to enjoy life.

It was very difficult leaving family and friends in the UK but we have had most of them visit and stay with us during the year so it has been perfect spending quality time together especially with my two young adults Christoper and Shannon.

Alison et Steward sont adorables. Ils sont venus à notre rencontre dès notre arrivée. Ils étaient disponibles et très prévenants. Ils nous avaient mis à disposition des produits alimentaires locaux pour le petit déjeuner. La région est propice aux ballades champêtres non loin des grandes villes de la région Charente Poitou (Nouvelle appellation Aquitaine). La literie est de bonne qualité. Le poêle à bois est très agréable, on s'y sent comme à la maison. On a apprécié la douche thalasso. Nous n'avons pas pu profiter des équipements extérieurs, du fait de la saison tardive, mais nous reviendrons aux beaux jours.

Tranquil spot

We had a lovely week in Stewart and Alison's gite, using it as a base for house hunting in the area. It is in a very quiet hamlet yet with easy access to "D" roads to local towns. The area was great for a morning 5 mile jog - no traffic . Pool and gite clean and well fitted. Local "fish" restaurant very French and very friendly.

Spent 14 peaceful days at the Gite. We were made very welcome by the hosts, who were most helpful getting us maps etc of areas we wanted to see. The swimming pool was excellent as was the location. Within an hour of La Rochelle, Cognac and Il de Re.

Having spent time in the Charente Maritime on holiday we knew this was where we wanted to live in France. We set out our criteria, as always location, location, location was the most important. With easy access to airports for travelling between the UK, we wanted to be on the edge of a small village, close enough to major towns that we were not too far in the country with two properties and enough land for a pool and nice size garden. The location and property ticked all the boxes, absolutely perfect when we viewed in November and more than we could have desired in the Summer. We sit outside each night in awe at the beautiful place we own, with such stunning views, the village and the people surpassing our expectations and making us more welcome than we could ever have dreamed.

All of the beaches of the Charente Maritime can be reached within one hour, from Royan to Saint Palais, La Tremblade, Chatelallion Plage to La Rochelle.


We are surrounded by airports, La Rochelle is 50 Minutes away, Poitier 1 hr 15 mins, Bordeaux 1 hr 30 mins and Limoges 2 hours.

The port of St Malo is closest being 4 hours away with Calais around 7 hours.

Use of a car is recommended.


The nearest village with a supermarket, boulangerie, presse, florist, butchers and a bar restaurant is Loulay around 3 mins. The nearest main town is St Jean d'Angely which is 10 minutes drive. At St Jean there is four supermarkets, garden centres, indoor aquatic centre, twice weekly markets, numerous restaurants, cafes and bars.

Our village of Lozay is a rural municipality in the canton of Loulay, with 150 inhabitants and is located 3 km from the capital of the canton. The town enjoys a privileged location, close to both the sea (La Rochelle, Royan and the islands of Ré, Aix and Oléron), but also to cities of art and history (Saintes, Rochefort) and the Cognac region. The heritage village has a fortified 12th century church listed as a historical monument and several lavoirs to discover (Basse Rues, Puy Bardon, Blouc).

Close to Lozay is the Jardin de Sculptures, the Romane Sculpture Gardens, it is also a rest area on the A10. The Gardens are a fabulous outdoor museum presenting an exciting journey of the most beautiful saintongeaise sculpture. Very pleasant walks can be taken in the Essouvert woods that lie 1.5 km outside the village.

Loulay is located about 56 km east of La Rochelle and 35 km south of Niort and lies on a hill 55 meters above where the Trézence (tributary of the Boutonne) rises. The Gateway of Saintonge, after the great plain of Niort, Loulay has always been a resting place for travellers and many who have rested have returned over and over again. The main route into Loulay is the RD 150 which runs parallel to the A10 Autoroute and SNCF railway from Niort to St Jean D'Angely. Loulay is primarily a rural center with small shops and services essential to daily life as well as the weekly Friday market.

After ten minutes drive you will find Saint-Jean D'Angely which is now home to a vibrant and bustling town centre, with a twice-weekly market (on Saturdays and Wednesdays). There is also a swimming and fitness centre, Atlantys. The Centre of European Culture at Saint-Jean-d'Angély, created in 1989 as a joint initiative taken by the Minister of Culture, the town of Saint-Jean-d'Angély, the regional council of Poitou-Charentes and the council of Charente Maritime, has hosted multinational sessions focused on European culture and citizenship that are dedicated to youngsters.

We offer our property for weekly rental especially during the Summer season, however please contact us for short and long term requirements.

For returning customers we are pleased to offer a 10% reduction from our standard rates.

The property at La Miellerie is joined to our house which is our permanent home. Alison and I are available at any time to give you help and advise on whatever you need, although we promise to leave you alone to enjoy our beautiful cottage, pool and garden. Whilst situated in the peaceful countryside within 10 minutes you can access everything you may need a perfect escape to the country location.

  • Notes on accommodation: Outside of the cottage is a covered outdoor eating area and plenty of space for parking your car, and setting up your sun loungers whilst the children play safely at the rear of the cottage or on the field above the main house. There is ample space with the total land area of 2,000 square metres. Above the main house is the heated pool, a fresh water pool of 9 metres x 4 metres x 1.5 metres deep and available from around nine in the morning until late at night. The pool is fully alarmed to comply with regulations. Various loungers, chairs, tables and umbrellas are available for use around the pool. The house is south facing, so the sun rises to the left side of the property and by mid morning the entire property is bathed in sunshine. Outside: The main house and gite is set on approx 2,000 square metres of land, approximately divided into three equal areas ... 1 - The gite/cottage, 2 - The main house and 3 - The garden / pool area. Utility Room: None. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The property is cleaned before arrival and provided with bed linen and towels for use in the cottage. A change of bed linen and towels is provided on a Saturday for guests staying for more than one week. We request that guests maintain the cleanliness
