House in Longtown, Nr. Carlisle, Cumbria, England - Secluded Border Rievers stronghold In an idyllic parkland location

Standing in the shadow of a 15th century peel tower, a sandstone house which has been created from two cottages and a barn. The house stands 100 yards back from the River Border Esk and looks over beautiful parkland. The area is steeped in history, when it was part of the debatable land, an area between England and Scotland where no rule of law applied until The Act of Union in 1603.

The house and tower are isolated from other dwellings and overlook the lovely Kirkandrews on Esk Church. The property is reached by a 400m long private tarmac drive and there is plenty of parking in the gravelled courtyard. The garden is mainly lawn with some shrubs and trees. The Border Esk has a prolific run of autumn salmon and whilst it was once famed for its sea trout, there is a smaller run of sea trout in the summer. Some fishing in front of the house is available to guests by arrangement and other beats on The rivers Esk, Eden, Annan, Nith and Tweed can be rented online through Fishpal. There is a tennis court nearby, which again can be used by arrangement. Well behaved dogs are welcome , but we would prefer them not to go upstairs or be allowed onto beds and chairs.

The house is a great place to get away from it all with family or groups of friends. It is ideally situated for exploring The Roman Wall, Historic Carlisle and Gretna Green. Being close to the M6 and A74 means that it does not take long to venture further afield. The Lake District is easily accessible, Ullswater can be reached in forty minutes.

Being only half a mile from the Border, you also have the Scottish Borders to explore. The ice cream in Langholm is a must, and you can look for Cashmere bargains in Hawick. Visit Drumlanrigg Castle, Floors castle and Hermitage Castle.

Wildlife abounds and there is great bird watching locally, on the river in front of the house, at Longtown Ponds and by The Solway. The WWT reserve at Caerlaverock is well worth a visit, particularly in winter and spring when tens of thousands of Barnacle and Pink Footed Geese roost there.

Bicycles can be hired locally in Longtown.

Ideal for a family get together

The rooms were really good and the beds comfortable. We did find that we had to use all wood available to keep warm but we did have some really cold weather, The Rayburn did not work and a Pyrex dish for the over shattered during cooking but that could just be bad luck!

I do not hesitate in recommending this property to others.

A beautiful house in beautiful surroundings

If you're looking for somewhere to spend quality time with family or friends, this is the place! The house is so versatile with all the beds being able to be doubles or twins and enough bathrooms for everyone.

The lovely owners baked a cake for us which was delicious and such a surprise when we arrived.

The garden is kept really well and with the good weather we were able to spend some time outdoors enjoying it and we also went for a lovely walk down the river.

The house has everything you could need and more and we would definitely recommend!

My one and only request would be for a couple of direction signs so it is clear where the house is, but other than that it was brilliant, we would definitely return.

Great find for our groupie getaway - adults and children :-)

This house worked fantastically for our friends and family getaway. The house is old and quirky but we loved that.

Indoor and especially outdoor space provided ample room for us all to spread out.

The setting with the peele tower, wobbly bridge, River Ewe and fields of cows and lambs proved to be perfect to just enjoy walking and roaming and enjoying the setting.

If you have children Walby Farm which is nearby is well worth a visit.

Log fires and cake on arrival were lovely little touches.

Quite a few main supermarket brands can deliver to the property which is handy we did this.

Fantastic

Fantastic stay, on arrival the house exceeded all expectations the quality of all the fixtures and fittings were outstanding and we were short of nothing. The location and views were breathtaking. Richard and family were all really friendly and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. Lots of extra touches like flowers and cake were much appreciated. The whole family had great fun in a fabulous house which accommodated us all very comfortably and we are all looking forward to returning. Highly recommend a stay here you won't be disappointed.

Perfect venue for celebrations

Driving up to the house first impressions were wow! Fabulous, beautiful and characterful, great for large gatherings of friends and family. Lovely welcome from Richard the owner - fires were blazing, flowers and cake on dining room table (cake was yummy - thank you) Wonderful views from every window - a walk to the pretty church and suspension bridge is a must! Huge, super comfy beds with fluffy duvets and pillows - bliss. Everything we needed for comfortable, relaxing, 'home from home' weekend but with oodles of space for everyone to enjoy themselves. Richard (owner) was very accommodating in allowing us to make use of the large grounds - we hired some 'inflatable' games to provide some party entertainment - great fun although slightly chilly and unseasonal for February. Would not hesitate in going back to visit again - highly recommended!

Lovely house in beautiful surroundings

We were a family of 12 adults, 3 children and 2 dogs and had more than enough space to all be doing different things at the same time in this lovely house. The bedrooms are all very generous with the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in and the house itself has much to offer for all age groups. The garden was very well kept with the added bonus of terrific scenery from every aspect. The owner Richard was on call to answer any queries and being able to pay by paypal made the whole experience very pleasurable. Our one great regret was that we booked for only 3 nights and not a whole week.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

The Solway Coast is only 5 miles away and there are some good walks on the North side between Eastriggs and Gretna. Further afield there are beaches at Sandy Hills and Rockliffe (55 miles). The closer Southern Solway Coast is a bit more of a hike but there are good beaches at Allonby and Silloth (35 miles). On the East Coast there are magnificent beaches all along the Northumberland Coast. It is a day trip, but well worth it.

Travel:

Newcastle Airport is closest at 50 miles. Edinburgh and Glasgow airports 85 miles. Manchester 130 Miles.

Mainline Rail services to Carlisle. (London 3 hours 20 minutes)

An Hourly Bus service to Carlisle and Edinburgh stops on the main road close to property entrance.

Longtown has basic facilities.

A good Spar open 8 until 10.

Butcher, Baker, Newsagent.

Fruit and vegetables from Cochranes Nurseries, half a mile North of Longtown on the A7.

Garage open 7 to 10.30 (Sunday 7.30 to 9.30)

Barclays Bank open Mon, Tues, Thurs only.

3 Cash machines.

Supermarkets in Carlisle: Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Aldi

The nearest restaurant is The Sportsman's, half a mile up the A7 , right on the border. It is only open in the evenings, but has good food. Smith's Hotel in Gretna is good. There are take-aways in Longtown. Chinese, Pizza, Fish and Chips and Bangladeshi. Carlisle has a good number of restaurants, but we do lack nice pubs in the immediate area.

Visit Carlisle Castle and the Border Regiment Museum, Carlisle Cathedral and Tullie House Museum.

The nearest major site on The Roman Wall is Birdoswald about 17 miles away and also visit Lanercost Priory and the tea rooms there.

The Blacksmiths Shop at Gretna Green is a bit touristy, but there is a good food hall selling Scottish and local produce. If you are in need of a retail shot, visit the Gretna Gateway shopping outlet. Also visit The Devil's Porridge museum at Eastriggs (9 miles) which features the enormous munitions factory built in World War I.
