We have just bought this lovely house but the previous owners (property no B7944) received numerous great reviews over the last three years.

The property is situated on a hill above Deia and offers stunning views, especially from the terrace

  • 5 of 5

The 2-week stay at the beginning of September 2016 was excellent in every way. The owners were very easy to deal with, comunicated promptly and offered full and helpful information. The feeling was that, in the event of a problem (which didn't arise!), there would be someone ready to help. The property is very comfortable, clean, attractive, full of beautiful objects and interesting books. It gives the feeling of a home and not just a standard holiday acccommodation.

There are superb views over the town and the sea from every room, but the most spectacular are from the roof terrace, with the rocky Tramuntana mountains rising just behind the house.

Caveat: the access to the property is by steep stone steps and the house is on four floors, all accessed by stairs.

Deia itself is hilly and steep in places.

However, this is not a problem for those who enjoy exercise and the bonus is the enhanced fitness and no weight gain worries, even after 2 weeks of sampling delicious restaurants.

The holiday was relaxing, enjoyable and interesting, only spoilt by the presence of stinging jelly fish on some (not all) days, which made swimming in the stunning Cala Deia hazardous. This jelly fish are present throughout the Mediterranean and it's just a random event that can happen anywhere.

I would recommend this house and the location without any reservation.

CHARMING, WELL-APPOINTED, MOUNTAIN RETREAT

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I rent from both VRBO and AirBandB internationally frequently and I can say this is the best rental we have ever had as it suited us perfectly. The property is tucked away in the mountain overlooking the city. It is by far the best view of the city and the sunset. Each morning after we made our breakfast we would walk the 2 minutes into town to enjoy cafe con leche looking back at the mountains and then would set off to we explore the town, the local beach, or nearby hiking trails. Occasionally we would drive into Valldemossa or Sa Fordada, (the hike into this beach cove and the adjacent restaurant at the bottom of the cliffs should not be missed. It is not a very challenging hike and the incline is manageable.). After returning to the town each afternoon we would often have a light lunch and take some wine, cheese and fresh figs back to the roof, enjoying the afternoon listening to music, reading books and overall enjoying the little slice of heaven that Jackie has created throughout this welcoming home. After sunset each evening we would walk back into the city to have dinner. The town has multiple Michelin Star restaurants and even the local lesser known restaurants are superb. To be able to not travel very far and remain in one location enjoying both an active lifestyle, fresh markets for good food and to enjoy amazing meals within a short walk were the hallmarks of our best vacation in years. The rooftop and third floor are so welcoming that we decided against some of the other planned exploring around the island to just enjoy it. The kitchen also has everything you could possibly need to cook a great meal.

One thing to note is that that you need to be slightly agile to rent here. Not an athlete or anything but the ability to make it up and down steep hills with a good pair of shoes. The walk into the city is steep but only perhaps 2 minutes. Just fine with moderate agility and a decent pair of shoes. (I often changed into a pair of wedges after the walk down the hill for dinner). For hiking, I recommend actually hiking shoes not tennis shoes if you make the trip to Soller. It is about 3 hours and quite steep.

My husband and I will be back and have sent this rental on to many friends already. Everything that we seek in a travel experience was embodied in this little villa and town. So much so that it is difficult to continue exploring the world knowing that beautiful Deia exists. Thanks to Jackie for making it wonderful.

The most perfect Easter Break .....

  • 5 of 5

This was my first time in Deia and I stayed over the Easter holidays. This house is a superb find - each of the 3 floors has an understated luxury that manages to feel elegant and comfortable at the same time. The views from the living room and bedroom make you feel part of the action of the town but are just removed enough from it all to keep everything relaxed. To save the best for last - the roof terrace and its king size daybed is my new happy place ! The eye-numbingly beautiful panorama of mountains, town and sea is mesmerising and I returned to London understanding why this special place has enraptured so many poets, musicians and travellers before me.

A Real Gem

  • 5 of 5

It’s hard to know where to begin with this review as we had such a lovely time in a beautiful house in a stunning location. The views are out of this world, if you love mountain scenery and sea vistas then this is the place for you. The house is charming, the decor is beautiful, clean and bright and has all the facilities and comforts you require. We lost hours on the roof terrace, relaxing, eating drinking and indulging in the panoramic views. To escape the heat we spent time in the lounge where it was lovely and cool. With a great collection of books, lovely design and perfectly placed comfy sofa looking at the sea, we enjoyed some respite from the heat. The kitchen has everything you need, washing machine, dishwasher, utensils and the all important cool box! The quiet calm of this property is sublime and yet in 5 minutes you are in the heart of Deia and it's village life with wonderful restaurants. The owners instructions were very clear and helpful and we highly recommend this property. We would love to come back to C’an Maroto as it is also a brilliant base for walking the Tramuntana Mountains.

Nice property but not easily accessible.

  • 3 of 5

The property was generally as described on Owner's Direct, however certain aspects were not covered and one aspect was not as described.

The access to the property from the private road involved descending some very rough steps then having to climb around 25 larger steps which did not have a handrail on the open side. There was a significant drop which was very difficult during the day and a problem at night as we needed a torch to see our way up to the door. In addition to this it was extremely awkward trying to negotiate the steps with our luggage and any grocery shopping. In our opinion this property would not be suitable for anyone with any health issues however small and definitely not suitable for children or the elderly.

The website said that there was an internet connection, however when we got there and on reading the notes about the property, it stated that the wifi was intermittent and only suitable for reading e mails. There is no usable access to the Internet!

It should also be noted that the parking space is further up the hill and is on a rough piece of ground on a bend.

The interior of the property was very clean & well appointed and the kitchen was very well equipped. The views from the upper 2 floors are stunning. This property did not suit us and we would not return.

Location

Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

The Sa Fonda bar, up the steps opposite the supermarket, is the hub of village life and should not be missed.

Art courses run by renowned artists are available in the village. There is a communal tennis court which can be booked at the Town Hall in advance. Tennis lessons are available from the tennis coach who lives in the village.

Coast/Beach:

25 minutes walk through olive groves and terraces, to Cala Deia cove with rustic pebble beach and 2 bar/restaurants. It has not been modernised, which lends to its rustic charm. The highly-reputed fish restaurant on the beach is considered to be one of the finest in the Balearic Islands (booking advisable). The walk back takes longer as its mostly up hill! If you prefer not to walk, there is a large car park at the bottom.

Travel:

Palma airport 40 mins drive or 50 (approx) euros taxi.

Distances:

Valldemossa - 9km.

Soller - 9km.

Palma - 40 - 45 minute drive.

Further Details:

Dining out is an absolute pleasure in Deia and the village is famous for its restaurants, with a huge variety of dining experiences available from the rustic to the sophisticated. Again, the restaurants are only a two minute walk down the hill. For example:

A super tapas bar, La Bodega de Xelini and the restaurant Es Racó des Teix (with a Michelin Star) are only 2 minutes walk away. For special occasions there is also El Olivo within La Residencia Hotel and Sebastians is also very special

There is a small intimate (and very reasonable) chinese restaurant, all freshly cooked local produce. It is called Sa Cova and must be booked in advance, and they can also arrange take away. Fantastic.

Superb Trattoria, again a 2 minutes walk for fresh pasta

The Village Cafe is great for reasonably price meals and a great view from the terrace.

Try Sa Font Fresca for coffee in the morning, overlooking the valley.

There are 2 supermarkets in Deia with a wide range of produce. Fresh bread, fresh milk and fresh pastries, as well as newspapers are available daily from Es Forn on the main street of Deia, Arxiduc Luis Salvador.

Deia has been rated by Forbes.com as in the top 10 most idyllic places to live, being an exceptionally beautiful mountain village. It was the home of Robert Graves and is now the holiday home of some well know personalities. The world famous La Residencia hotel is within 3 minute walk, offering beauty therapy treatments, to name but one.
