About the property

2 bedroom, 2 bathroom converted Victorian Hop Kiln, close to Ludlow,Shropshire.

The Gold Award rated Hop Kiln is an early Victorian building in very peaceful, unspoiled countryside. It is approached down a long drive off a quiet lane with the owners 16th century house adjacent. The building retains many original features, lots of beams and quirky level changes, and is decorated and furnished to a high standard with antiques, books and pictures and very comfortable beds. There is a private courtyard furnished with a bbq, table and chairs and a parasol, and also a lawned area with a picnic bench and wonderful sunset views across the countryside towards Mortimer forest. The Hop Kiln is ideal for people wanting to explore the beautiful Welsh Marches area. It is close to Ludlow with its renowned food and antique shops, restaurants set in glorious medieval and Georgian buildings. The castle is the location in June and July for a major arts festival and in September for it's world famous food festival. Nearby is Tenbury Wells, an attractive small market town, with good food shops and a family run supermarket with a strong emphasis on local produce. It is excellent walking and cycling country with rolling countryside, the drama of the Clee Hills and the tranquillity of Mortimer Forest. We provide maps and guide books of the area and can advise you on good walks.

About maggie Anderson

John and I are retired Production Designers working in TV and Film. We moved back to the area where John grew up in 1998, when we bought Old Harpfields, which had a redundant Hop Kiln which we then developed as a holiday cottage in 2006. We have other barns which people often say we should develop, but we don't want to live in a holiday complex and loose the lovely seclusion which both ourselves and our guests enjoy.

maggie Anderson purchased this cottage in 1998

Why maggie Anderson chose Tenbury Wells

It is a stunning area and when I first met John in 1978 and came to meet his family in Tenbury Wells, I fell in love with the area and persuaded John to move back when he left the BBC in 1998. The house and surrounding setting has a wonderful "mis en scene" in totally unspoiled countryside, but with Ludlow and Tenbury Wells close by

What makes this cottage unique

Peace and quiet, fabulous scenery, Gold award winning cottage and our own honey!

Guestbook comments from the owner

The most beautiful cottage we have ever stayed in! The standard of decor is amazing, extremely tasteful yet superbly comfortable - we kept walking around the place saying "this place is amazing"

We have stayed in many rental properties throughout Europe as well as the UK and it takes a lot to "blow us away" They have really thought of everything and sitting in the front garden with a glass of wine in hand, looking out past the horses over rolling countryside is magical.

A beautiful property in a stunning part of the UK. 28/06/2015

A beautiful cottage in an excellent location close to Ludlow. Our little boy loved the different floor level; the enclosed courtyard made it safe, while he could run around on the large grassy area near the friendly horses. The owners were really accommodating and friendly and there are lots of nice places to eat nearby. We will defiantly be returning. 31/05/2014

Peaceful - a lovely cottage in great countryside

  • 5 of 5

We loved the character of this cottage - the conversion from a hop kiln has been done very tastefully and the rooms on different levels made for interest. The kitchen is well equipped and large and we were plenty warm enough in a cold week (especially nice to have the woodburner in the lounge). The fresh flowers, milk, tea and coffee were appreciated - thank you. Maggie and John were very welcoming. There's plenty to do locally (we recommend the Regal cinema, Berrington Hall, Cardingmill valley, Church Stretton, Ludlow and the view from the old quarry at Clee Hill) but we equally enjoyed staying around the property, reading and relaxing.

Truly wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

Maggie and John’s Tenbury Wells cottage/ the “hop kiln” was an absolute dream. The inside is beautifully decorated and felt like home. The house was well equipped for all our wants and needs and close to the main town. Maggie and John were very friendly (as were the sheep we saw from our window each morning!) and made our stay even more special.

Although we didn’t get to see much of nearby Ludlow and only saw Tenbury Wells at night, the area around the house is idyllic and without all the noise and commotion of city living. We would definitely book again if staying in the Shropshire area. Thanks Maggie and John!

Owner's Response: Thank you Mazie, the sheep were supposed to be in the field not the garden!!!! It was lovely meeting your family and we do hope you come again, Maggie, John, Coco and the horses!

A truly welcoming cottage

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in November and were lucky to have excellent weather which allowed us to do everything we wanted. We took the dog on long walks in and around Tenbury. We went to Ludlow to visit the castle and then to Ludlow races where we had a great time even though we didn’t pick all the winners! We took the train from Ludlow to Chester so that we could sit back and enjoy the scenery. Visited Ironbridge and Telford and we could have done so much more but we ran out of time !! What was really nice was knowing we had such a welcoming cottage to come home to each evening. We felt thoroughly spoilt. Thank you Maggie and John.

We had a lovely four night break at this lovely property. So beautifully decorated and designed and very cosy indeed. Well equipped kitchen and close to Tenbury Wells and Ludlow. We went for a relaxing few days after a very busy few weeks at work so really just wanted to relax and recharge our batteries and it was perfect for that. Very quiet and private I'm sure we'll be back.

Beautiful property in an idyllic & peaceful setting.

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely loved the Hop Kiln. It has been lovingly restored and made into fantastic accommodation with rooms on different levels that make it even more interesting. The fittings and furnishings are done to a very high standard. There's plenty to do even when visiting in late October (as we did). There are some lovely National Trust & English Heritage properties to see along with some beautiful villages. We loved going into Tenbury Wells - a visit to the Art Deco cinema was a must along with the Pump House. The locals are extremely friendly as well! Although we ate out in some great places nearby some evenings, we also made use of the fantastic kitchen facilities to cook up something ourselves and then cosied up in the lounge with the log burner! Would thoroughly recommend this property.
