About the property

2 bedroom, 2 bathroom converted Victorian Hop Kiln, close to Ludlow,Shropshire.

The Gold Award rated Hop Kiln is an early Victorian building in very peaceful, unspoiled countryside. It is approached down a long drive off a quiet lane with the owners 16th century house adjacent. The building retains many original features, lots of beams and quirky level changes, and is decorated and furnished to a high standard with antiques, books and pictures and very comfortable beds. There is a private courtyard furnished with a bbq, table and chairs and a parasol, and also a lawned area with a picnic bench and wonderful sunset views across the countryside towards Mortimer forest. The Hop Kiln is ideal for people wanting to explore the beautiful Welsh Marches area. It is close to Ludlow with its renowned food and antique shops, restaurants set in glorious medieval and Georgian buildings. The castle is the location in June and July for a major arts festival and in September for it's world famous food festival. Nearby is Tenbury Wells, an attractive small market town, with good food shops and a family run supermarket with a strong emphasis on local produce. It is excellent walking and cycling country with rolling countryside, the drama of the Clee Hills and the tranquillity of Mortimer Forest. We provide maps and guide books of the area and can advise you on good walks.

About maggie Anderson

John and I are retired Production Designers working in TV and Film. We moved back to the area where John grew up in 1998, when we bought Old Harpfields, which had a redundant Hop Kiln which we then developed as a holiday cottage in 2006. We have other barns which people often say we should develop, but we don't want to live in a holiday complex and loose the lovely seclusion which both ourselves and our guests enjoy.

It is a stunning area and when I first met John in 1978 and came to meet his family in Tenbury Wells, I fell in love with the area and persuaded John to move back when he left the BBC in 1998. The house and surrounding setting has a wonderful "mis en scene" in totally unspoiled countryside, but with Ludlow and Tenbury Wells close by

The most beautiful cottage we have ever stayed in! The standard of decor is amazing, extremely tasteful yet superbly comfortable - we kept walking around the place saying "this place is amazing"

We have stayed in many rental properties throughout Europe as well as the UK and it takes a lot to "blow us away" They have really thought of everything and sitting in the front garden with a glass of wine in hand, looking out past the horses over rolling countryside is magical.

A beautiful cottage in an excellent location close to Ludlow. Our little boy loved the different floor level; the enclosed courtyard made it safe, while he could run around on the large grassy area near the friendly horses. The owners were really accommodating and friendly and there are lots of nice places to eat nearby. We will defiantly be returning. 31/05/2014

Notes on accommodation: There is plenty of private parking and private access. Outside: There is a private walled courtyard with a table, chairs and parasol, and a lawned area with a picnic bench. BBQ available. Secure storage for bikes etc. Utility Room: n/a but there id an iron and board, vacuum cleaner and brushes. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels linen and tea towels are included. The property is cleaned on changeover days, and clean linen provided once a week if the guests stay longer than a week. Other: The hall and landing and stairs are decorated with lots of pictures.

Dreamy shropshire cottage with amazing views

This property exceeded our expectations. It was not evident from the photos that there was a surrounding panorama of fields and we loved the sunsets and warm feeling of the sun on us until earl evening every day. John and Maggie were great hosts, really helpful and welcoming ! The property itself was well equipped and easy to keep clean during our stay. The main bedroom with ensuite shower has a great feeling of space which is unusual as the space is above and feels wonderful when lying on the comfy beds ! It felt like a hotel ! Lots of personal touches and very tastefully renovated and decorated. We enjoyed many beautiful riverside walks and particularly enjoyed Clee Hill, Mortimer Forest (but seriously watch out for getting lost - mapmywalk App is supposed to be good for this) and Cleobury Mortimer and Ludlow were an absolute delight ! We took our two dogs with us, the older Sheepdog could not negotiate the top set of stairs or was perhaps too worn out from walking miles ! John and Maggie were very tolerant of the dogs sitting out of the front of the property with us and wandering around. Internet reception was okay, we didn't actually have much time for watching TV but there are a few games available, chess, cards, lots of books, pick up sticks and puzzles. We ate out at the Salwey Arms, beautiful pub within 10 minutes drive great service. We didn't really rate the indian take away (Jaz's), the chinese from Singapore gardens was reasonably good, the fish and chip shop gave us the msot massive portions, we could easily have fed at least 4 of us from two portions of cod and chips and had more chips left !!! very reasonable and good quality. Tenbury itself is pretty with 2 supermarkets and another planned and more unusual shops and an old Regal style cinema and a pool. The locals were very friendly and we were sad to go but we definitely want to come back !

Lovely peaceful setting

Lovely cottage in a quiet peaceful setting, the cottage was comfortable every thing you need for a relaxed holiday the only problem we had was with the up stairs shower which caused some problems. Otherwise I would have given 5 stars.

Owner's Response: The shower problem was unprecedented and I hope will never happen again! I am putting something in the Information Book so that the tap is never over wound again so no one else will have your rather "over wet" experience.

An absolutely beautiful property, so tastefully furbished. Very warm against the frosts outside

Nice simply to chill out in on a cold, winter's afternoon. There is a lot to do and see in the area as well and the owner's provided copious information on walks and things to do. Nice walking country.

Changeover Day:
Changeover on Saturday for weekly bookings, but can be flexible. Short stay bookings (non-peak season only) Fridays and Mondays, though again this can be flexible.
Arrivals any time after 3pm and departures by 10am.
