About the property

Apartment in La Bastide d'Engras, near Uzes, Gard, Languedoc-Roussillon, France - Pretty Hill Village Close to Uzes, Set Among Ancient Forest, Vines, Orchards and Sunflowers

The impressive twelfth century vaulted stone entrance of this restored ancient village former farmhouse adjacent to the chateau leads to a two-storey apartment, separate from the owners' accommodation. The apartment has been renovated to retain its character and immense charm and is spacious, fresh and comfortable. The large, airy living room features a long dining table and modern appliances and is Wi-Fi connected. There is comfortable seating for relaxing after a day's sightseeing, and a fireplace to gather around on cool evenings. The apartment sleeps four: there are two bedrooms with their own shower-rooms as well as a third bedroom if required - please enquire for rates. The pretty heritage village of La Bastide d'Engras, set in a commanding position overlooking the forest canopy towards Uzes, comprises old houses clustered in and around one of the most ancient bastides in France, the remaining picturesque walls and towers of which form a backdrop to the village. It is perfectly placed for soaking up the atmosphere of traditional rural France, enjoying wonderful forest walks or bicycle rides, visiting local markets and brocantes, taking in smart Uzes or picturesque Lussan, each close by. Riding, canoeing and river-swimming are all available locally. Bustling Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie, with its ceramics workshops, markets and all amenities at hand (supermarket, pharmacy, doctor, dentist), is close by, and neighbouring Saint-Laurent-la-Vernede has a village shop and artisan bakery. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Pont du Gard and the Cotes du Rhone plus local vineyards offering tastings are also important attractions. We are also very well placed for visiting further afield the festival cities of Nimes (45 mins), Avignon (1 hr) and the Mediterranean beaches (1 hr, 30 mins), not forgetting Aix-en-Provence, Saint Remy de Provence, and the charming hilltop villages of the Luberon. Flights to Nimes, Avignon, Montpellier and Marseille all serve this area, as does the A7 motorway and TGV Eurostar (Avignon).

Please note that this summer's rate reflects the fact that the garden and pool are no longer available.

About Duncan and Annie Barker

Duncan and Annie Barker recently relocated to the south of France to pursue their lifelong interest in the creative arts and to work in painting and textiles from their studios at La Breche, where they also live with their very sociable cocker spaniel.

Duncan and Annie Barker purchased this apartment in 2014

Why Duncan and Annie Barker chose La Bastide-d'Engras

It was essential to be close to the excellent connections and cultural buzz of Uzes, Nimes and Avignon, but also to enjoy the pace of rural life, closely bound to the changing seasons. The pretty village of La Bastide, with its commanding yet sheltered position, its wonderful ancient stone buildings and warm and friendly inhabitants, was the perfect place to settle. Surrounded by garrigue and forest, farms and vineyards, it the bears the stamp of a culture which has lasted here for millennia.

What makes this apartment unique

One of the oldest houses in the village, La Breche has grown organically over some nine centuries. We love the fact that many generations have lived within its deep stone walls, which have happily adapted over time to accommodate various incarnations as, for example, farmhouse, café, village shop and school. As a place to live and work, La Breche is a true delight: somewhere to unwind and relax, be inspired and reinvigorated.

A beautiful, stylish home where we were made to feel especially welcome

  • 5 of 5

Photos cannot do this beautiful, spacious home justice - its setting is amazing (an ancient village) and the owners have decorated the house (apartment is not quite accurate) so tastefully that it was a joy to spend time there. It provided a great base for exploring the area, with a tranquil garden (and pool) to retreat to in the heat of the day. The house is very well-equipped and fitted out - we can't wait to return.

Tranquil delightful comfortable home.

  • 5 of 5

Annie and Duncan were very helpful and the villa was amazing. Quaint French decor with an air of comfortability that was awesome. The village, although out of the way was just perfect for our 6-8 adults with rental cars. Central to many picturesque places. The villa itself with 3 bathrooms went well beyond our expectations. Would definitely highly recommend.

An amazing holiday

  • 5 of 5

The apartment is one of the very best apartments that we have ever stayed in. The way in which it has been designed is very sympathetic with the age of the building and very French..... we were very comfortable and loved staying in the apartment. Everything you could have wanted was to hand! The apartment was beautifully presented, clean and well maintained.

The swimming pool and gardens were a wonderful place to relax and enjoy our time together as a family.

The location was fantastic and we visited many beautiful places.

The owners were so very welcoming and were helpful and keen to ensure we had a comfortable stay.

We all had a wonderful holiday and would highly recommend it to couples, families and friends.

A magical French experience

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully and immaculately restored apartment with charming, helpful owners. We normally stay in relatively modern villas but this amazing house, which has formed a central part of village life over the centuries, provided a magical and authentic experience in the heart of the French countryside.

An inspiring Week in France

  • 5 of 5

My family and I enjoyed a lovely week staying in Duncan and Annie's apartment near Uzes. The area didn't disappoint and the apartment, pool and outside are were beautifully put together. We came away feeling rejuvenated and inspired. There was something for everyone and the pool was perfect to keep cool and entertain the children. Duncan and Annie made us feel welcome and looked after and were always ready to help and advise. The property was immaculate and we had everything we needed. We would definitely recommend the property to friends and family. It has lots to offer and if you love France and all things French as we do, you'll be in heaven!

La Breche - a beautiful place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

This property was immaculate - with everything required for a comfortable self catering stay. The recently refurbished property is a great base to visit many lovely places in the Gard area of languedoc. The village la Breche is situated is rural France at its best. The garden and pool area were beautiful and a great place to cool off and enjoy the lovely lavender, bougainvillea and sit under the vine. Annie and Duncan were very welcoming and helpful - suggesting local places to visit. I could not fault this lovely apartment - we had a lovely week here and look forward to booking again in the future.
