Cottage in Mullion, Cornwall, England - Stunning Coastal Location, 5 Minutes Walk to the Beach, 10 Minutes Walk to the Village

OwnersDirect recommend telephone contact between owner and holiday guest before booking. Do please telephone before you book for initial contact and to discuss date and price flexibility, as well as my refund policy, (which Owners Direct cannot correctly display, but which you will find in my T&Cs Rental Agreement further on in this advertisement). You can access my telephone number via the Prices and Availability section, 'call owner' is located below the 'request to book' green button. Alternatively you can use the 'Enquire Now' button (it is located near the 'Request to Book' button below the photos, as well as in the Availability and Prices section). Now about Cwary Vean:

Cwary Vean was built by Viscount Clifton, circa 1900. The single storey cottage has light, spacious rooms with high ceilings. A small conservatory with table and chairs is the perfect place to take in the sea view or to catch the winter sun. The garden patio area catches the Summer sun from rising to setting. There is a private gate from the garden onto the lane leading down to Polurrian beach and the coastal path. Situated midway between village and beach, Cwary Vean is ideal for walkers or beach lovers, but conveniently placed as a centre from which to explore the peninsular's wide diversity of villages, beaches, estuaries, woods, moors and exotic gardens. The accommodation is spacious and airy in summer but, with central heating and a log burner cosy and warm in Winter.

About the Owner

As a child growing up in the village, the beaches, woods, valleys and moors were all magical places that I explored and loved. Cwary Vean always had a faint air of mystery and quirkiness for me as a youngster. As an 'oldster', I was delighted to be able to buy it in 2000. It had a warm and welcoming feel but, a bit like an old dog in a rescue home, was much in need of TLC (and four years dedicated hard work, which became my perfect retirement project!)

I just love being here and making my holiday home available as a base for guests to have ‘proper Cornish’ holidays. Cwary Vean has been welcoming self catering holiday guests since 2004; I have met some lovely people (including Carole on the beach but that’s another story). I have made good friends whom I look forward to seeing every year & who still make new discoveries every visit.

I always wanted to return to Cornwall and Mullion and the friendly villagers and community of my childhood upbringing. Cwary Vean was the perfect location; snugly placed, in the small quarry from which it was built and named, the house is sheltered from severe weather but retains beautiful sea and valley views. About halfway between village shops, pubs, restaurants etc. & Polurrian beach, the location is the perfect balance between rural tranquillity and accessible village facilities. Here one can relax in peace without hearing much more than a few gulls or passing horses, or go for a pre breakfast swim before heading off to explore the hugely diverse Peninsular. There are so many interesting and exciting things to see and do in a relatively small area that I never want to be anywhere else.

"Chris made us very welcome and was so helpful with getting our car tyre repaired. An excellent place to come, there are so many walks 'straight from the door'. Local shops very good and easy walking distance. The Old Inn was very hospitable, food was good and they even had a section in the restaurant where we could take the dog".

Dave & Judy Robson with Riley - Oxfordshire

"Chris is very hospitable, kind and generous host. We recommend: coastal walks between here and Church Cove. Pub: Blue Anchor - excellent. Kelynack fish behind Medical Centre, Kynance crab at Lizard. Excellent holiday. Thank you".

A warm, homely holiday base

  • 4 of 5

I was attracted to this property because it is dog friendly, centrally heated and secluded, yet within walking distance of pubs, shops etc. It is tastefully decorated and furnished as per the website pictures. It is truly a haven for dogs with a gate onto a track leading to fields and a beautiful sheltered beach. The heating alone is efficient but the log burner just adds to the cosiness. There is hot water in abundance so it is no problem for four adults wanting showers and baths. The beds are comfortable and the natural silence aids sleep. The cottage is well equipped and the external conservatory area provides storage space for food and drink (it kept our wine cool), boots and coats. We cooked two roast dinners during our holiday and, although there is limited worktop space, we had sufficient pans and dishes and managed well. I was totally unimpressed with the local Asda's delivery service and would recommend Sainsbury instead. We explored the local area, walking the coast path to Mullion Cove where there is a dog friendly cafe, and in the opposite direction to Poldhu Cove where we enjoyed an impressive breakfast, sitting outside at the Cafe on the beach - in December!! This cafe, which deserves full marks for quality and value, also allows dogs Inside and is open all year, except for two days!! I would recommend visitors bring a powerful torch if planning to walk from the cottage to the village in the evening because the road to the cottage is very uneven. Further afield, we had a fantastic meal in the Cadgwith Cove Inn after a lovely walk over the coast path to Carleon Cove and The Poltesco Valley which has ancient industrial remains to explore. Porthleven, as beautiful as ever, provided retail therapy with its lovely galleries and gift shops. The walk down to Prussia Cove with its dramatic views of the sea, is well worth the effort, as is a stroll around the lovely Trebah Gardens where the gift shops and cafe are worth a visit! Wherever we ventured, it was always a pleasure to return to the comfortable Cwary Vean. Thank you to Chris and the lovely Tilly for the warm welcome and for being so easy going and helpful.

Owner's Response: Well that is really nice to read-Thank you! We do try hard to make our guests glad they came and we also try to contribute in any unintrusive way that we can to the enjoyment of their holiday; so it is very much appreciated when we get such nice feedback. It was lovely to meet you and your family (including Breeze and Reuben) and you will all be very welcome if you decide to come again sometime. Thank you too for the comment about the torch. I am going to look for one today to keep in the cottage for winter visitors to use on the dark evening walks. I think one of the new clockwork ones would be a good idea -no chance of the battery failing halfway home!

A wonderful week in October

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful week in Cwary Vean at the beginning of October. The cottage is nestling in a sheltered area on the way down to the beach. The location is absolutely fantastic. The secluded private garden, totally dog safe, has a gate to the footpath that takes you down to the beach. You can either carry on the Coastal path in either direction, or choose to walk across fields and grasslands. You are walking distance to Mullion, a lovely little village where you can buy fish that has just been caught.

The scenery around The Lizard is absolutely stunning.

We were so welcomed by Chris and Tilly. Tilly is such a friendly and good natured dog. It is lovely to stay somewhere where you feel that your host will do almost anything to help you enjoy Cwary Vean and the area as much as he does. We will be back!

Owner's Response: Thank you Eva & John for coming to stay at Cwary Vean. Thank you too for taking the time to write such a lovely review for us. It was a pleasure to meet you both (& Elsa) and we would love to welcome you back for another holiday. We do try hard to make the holiday cottage a home from home and to ensure that guests know they are welcome, without intruding on their privacy. When we receive a review such as yours it does encourage us to believe we may have succeeded. As always during quiet weeks we are looking for upgrades and improvements where possible. So far this month we have enlarged the patio and put on a new, taller, entrance gate, I think you will approve. We shall look forward to your return- Thank you!

Secluded, tranquil, beach getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday. Chris made us feel so welcome and nothing was too much trouble. The location was fabulous; peaceful and secluded yet very close to the beach and local amenities. The cottage itself was immaculate and had everything we needed. Locally, there was plenty to do for our teenage boys (sea kayaking with Lizard Adventure was fun) and Chris recommended some superb restaurants. Also, the village of Mullion had a real community feel with many friendly locals. This was a very special place and we will be back....my husband and I haven't felt so relaxed for decades! Thanks again to Chris for being such a great host.

A week in Cornwall

  • 5 of 5

The property is lovely and just as described and it suited our family (including 2 little girls age 3 and 5) perfectly. It had everything we needed.

The location near the beach is just fantastic.

Chris (the owner) was very welcoming, we arrived early to beat the traffic and Chris very kindly allowed us in to make a cup of tea before we headed off to the beach which is just a 5 minute walk away.

I would definitely recommend this property to anyone thinking of staying there. It is on our list to definitely come back to.

There are lots of nice local beaches including one at the end of the path just 5 min walk away, the village is only a 10 minute walk where there was a nice playpark for the kids and pubs/shop etc

Owner's Response: Thank you for coming to stay with us, it was a pleasure to meet you all. Your two lasses are about the same age as the children who visited me in my first year of Holiday Letting so many years ago-they are now late teenagers and still coming back to relive their childhood holidays. It is always our pleasure when guests have a great time at Cwary Vean and we would love to welcome you all back for another visit (hopefully with lots of sunshine again). By the way-we have left the electric blender in the Cottage as a permanent facility and this week's guests are making summer fruit drinks with it!

Warm welcome and fantastic location

  • 5 of 5

On arrival, we were warmly greeted by Chris and Tilly and shown where to find everything. The cottage is superbly located and just a few minutes walk from Polurrian Bay in one direction and Mullion Village in the other. We felt cosy and warm during our stay, the wood-burner was great on colder evenings and the conservatory on sunny mornings for breakfast. The Lizard Peninsular is full of spectacular coves and quaint Cornish fishing villages. The Cafe at the Lizard Lighthouse with its amazing views soon became a favourite. We would strongly recommend Cwary Vean to anyone thinking of a stay in Mullion, you will not be disappointed.

Owner's Response: Thank you for coming to stay and for taking the time to write such a nice review for us. I think this early season part of the year has a lot to offer with the spring flowers in the hedgerows and the promise of Summer returning. We do seem to be lucky with our climate on this bit of the peninsular and Spring sunshine after the winter is just as welcome as our guests! Thank you -come again sometime

From the Owner

I always wanted to return to Cornwall and Mullion and the friendly villagers and community of my childhood upbringing. Cwary Vean was the perfect location; snugly placed, in the small quarry from which it was built and named, the house is sheltered from severe weather but retains beautiful sea and valley views. Activity and Interests

Nearest Barpub : Old Inn & Mounts Bay pubs 10-15 mins walk at 1 Miles Nearest Golf : Mullion Golf Club at 3 Miles Nearest Restaurant : Mullion Village at 1 Miles

Special interest holidays:

Locations and settings for Poldark TV and numerous films both modern and Classic

Local fishermen will take small parties fishing for mackerel which make a wonderful supper on the barbecue. Polurrian is also favourite for rod and line and the sea bass is even better than the mackerel.

Dressed crab and lobster are available to order as is fresh fish (from named local boats).

Polurrian beach is a favourite with geologists, being divided by a fault line & carrying well marked breccia (geological survey map available on request).

Sailing, surfing and horse riding are all available in the vicinity.

Coast/Beach:

The cottage is 300 metres from Polurrian Beach and the coastal path. 15 minutes to the west Poldhu Beach has a bustling cafe serving refreshments all day and they also rent wet-suits if needed to enjoy the excellent surfing at this beach. There is a Surf School where guests can book lessons to learn or improve their surfing skills. 10-15 minutes walk-(longer by car!) beyond Poldhu, Gunwalloe and Dollar beaches are also popular. Mullion Habour is about 20 mins walk to the south. It is aworking harbour and has a spectacular 'walk through' cave to an adjacent beach (low tide only, tide chart provided for guests). There are numerous other beaches and walks within 15 to 30 minutes drive away. Kennack Sands is popular with families and Kynance Cove is one of the most spectacular beaches in Cornwall.

Travel:

Approximately 1 hours drive from Newquay Airport.

40 minutes drive from Redruth Station.

If you want a rest from driving, there is a bus stop at the end of the lane less than half a mile from the cottage, and of course both on and off road cycling. Some guests only use their car on arrival and departure, some go out exploring the peninsular every day.

Distances:

Helston 8 miles

Falmouth 20 miles

Truro 25 miles

St. Ives 25 miles

Penzance 23 miles

Lands End 30 miles

Further Details:

Mullion village has a General Store and a Cost Cutter and an excellent Spar shop (open from early morning to late evening). The village also has a Health Centre,Boots Chemist, 2 hairdressers, a beauty salon, an excellent post office, Pasty and Pizza shop, a book shop and a good quality souvenir shop. Sainsbury and Tesco are in Helston about 8 miles away and both will take your order before you leave home and deliver to Cwary Vean for your arrival. There are two pubs (one allows dogs), both do good food. The Galleon serves great fish and chips and The Village Restaurant serves a good variety of dishes. Whilst the village has all you need for your stay without having to get into the car, the peninsular is scattered with great places to eat or visit.

There are many wonderful gardens to visit with Trebah, Glendurgan and The Lost Gardens of Heligan being firm favourites. The Eden project is now world famous and has an 'all weather' appeal.

Many of Cornwall's other attractions are within easy reach. The famous St. Michael's Mount in Marizion has a wonderful castle and gardens and the unique Minack theatre, Cornwall's theatre under the stars, is well worth visiting even if only to look at the Roman like theatre, the views and the exotic plants.

Lizard Peninsular has 5000 acres of nature reserve with a wide range of wild flowers-many of them rare and endangered, a popular venue for botanists and keen gardeners.

There is a wall map of the Lizard peninsular in the cottage and a pocket map of Mullion village to help new guests to get their bearings.
