About the property


Enjoy the full beauty of the Mosel river from direct views out of all front windows and balcony. Our Jewel of the Mosel townhouse is spread across 5 floors, giving commanding views from all levels. It is an ideal base for families and groups with the wide selection of sleeping arrangements which it offers. Everyone can come together in the very large kitchen/dining room or 'do their own thing' on other floors of the house. Be aware there are lots of stairs though - making the house exciting for children to explore!

Relax and sit watching the barges, river cruise ships and pleasure boats passing your windows and balcony on the Mosel. Step outside and board one of these for a trip to nearby Cochem or Traben Trabach. Sit outside under grape vines on the promenade or wander the streets of the town - all criss crossed by vines. Stroll up into the vineyards behind the house for magnificent views, or for the more energetic take well marked Nordic walking routes. There are even dog walks marked out by paw prints, and we are very pet friendly!

Enjoy sampling the famous wines from the local vineyards - you are sure to take home some bottles of the famous Zeller Schwarze Katz!

The house is well equipped and furnished so even on a rainy day you would be happy indoors (if you had not chosen to explore the exciting museums of Roman Trier!)

We look forward to welcoming new and returning guests! We ourselves stayed as guests at the property twice and fell in love with it, so jumped at the chance to buy it!

Nice view, but ragged

Das Haus ist sehr zentral in Zell in der Fußgängerzone gelegen. Insbesondere von der großzügigen Wohnküche mit großem Esstisch und Panoramafenster hat man einen wunderschönen Blick auf die Mosel und den gegenüberliegenden Stadtteil Barl. Positiv überrascht hat uns die Küchenausstattung in Vielfalt und Qualität. Damit ist das Beste an der Wohnung bereits benannt. Leider überwiegen die negativen Erfahrungen.

Auf unsere Reklamation des Reinigungszustandes der Wohnung wurde nur oberflächlich nachgebessert, was nicht wirklich geholfen hat. Da der Verwalter vor Ort auch nach mehreren Kontaktversuchen nicht zu erreichen war, haben wir uns direkt an die Vermieterin in England gewandt. Gebessert hat sich aber nichts. Nach drei Tagen kam der Verwalter vorbei, um die Mängel aufzunehmen, behoben wurde in unserer Urlaubswoche nichts davon.


o Staub und Dreck unter mehreren Betten (benutzte Taschentücher der Vorgänger)

o Parkett lose und Teile herausgefallen

o Steckdose nicht mehr fest in der Wand verschraubt

Oberes Bad:

o Völlig verdreckter Duschvorleger (Das erste was wir selbst gewaschen haben)

o Verdreckte Lüftung

o Regler der Tellerdusche abgebrochen, nicht nutzbar

o Halter für die Duschbrause lose, Brausekopf musste in der Hand gehalten werden

o Befestigung der gläsernen Duschabtrennung lose (uns sind die Schrauben entgegengefallen).


o Alte Lebensmittel in den Küchenschränken

o Pelletheizung völlig verdreckt und konnte nicht gestartet werden. (Der Verwalter hat es gar nicht erst probiert.)

o Tote Fliegen im Lampenschirm

o Sessel abgenutzt und fleckig


o Das Wohnzimmer verfügt über keinen eigenen Heizkörper und konnte aufgrund der niedrigen Raumtemperatur nicht genutzt werden. Der Verwalter wusste nicht, dass es keinen Heizkörper in dem Raum gab. Das Wohnzimmer soll über die Pelletheizung der Küche geheizt werden.

Die Haustür schloss nicht zuverlässig, was einen groben Sicherheitsmangel darstellte. Wir mussten immer händisch abschließen. In fast allen Räumen defekte Leuchtmittel in den Lampen.

Für eine größere Gruppe gut geeignet, schöne Lage, leider recht ungepflegt. Wir können die Wohnung nur bedingt empfehlen.

Owner's Response: We purchased our lovely house in Zell 4 years ago and since we have owned it we have enjoyed being able to enhance its many features. Amongst the major works that we have completed recently are: adding a second balcony, adding additional heating throughout the house, replacing the front door and original shop window (creating both a high level of security and additional warmth), adding an additional en suite shower room, and purchasing a hand made oak dining table with matching leather upholstered chairs to enable groups of up to 14 to dine together. Guests who have returned over the years have been impressed by the continual improvement in standards of our holiday home. We also stay there regularly and are thus able to ensure that all appliances are in optimum working order. Gardeners will be aware that geraniums can not be expected to be in flower in March, nor new plants available to be purchased. However, in season the flowers from both our balconies make an impressive display. Likewise we do not expect insects in the very early part of the year and thus only replaced the fly door onto the balcony recently. All 14 rooms in the house have light fittings consisting of 2 - 6 bulbs – it is very well lit. At the time of your visit I believe only 2 bulbs needed replacing. The pellet stove in our main kitchen is somewhat of an unusual feature. Many guests enjoy using It for its novelty value (It is far from being the main source of heating). There are comprehensive instructions on how to work it (it does require quite a long wait for its ignition sequence to be completed). We willingly refunded you some money regarding your dissatisfaction concerning dust under some of the furniture, but do note it is very difficult to move the sofa as it requires heavy brackets to keep it together. Wir haben unser schönes Haus in Zell vor 4 Jahren gekauft und seitdem wir es besessen haben, haben wir es genossen, seine vielen Eigenschaften zu verbessern. Zu den wichtigsten Arbeiten, die wir in letzter Zeit fertig gestellt haben, gehören: ein zweiter Balkon, zusätzliche Heizung im ganzen Haus, Ersatz der Haustür und des originalen Schaufensters (die ein hohes Maß an Sicherheit und zusätzliche Wärme bieten) sowie eine zusätzliche Dusche Zimmer und Kauf eines handgemachten Eichenesstisches mit zusammenpassenden ledernen gepolsterten Stühlen, um Gruppen von bis 14 zu ermöglichen, zusammen zu speisen.

We had a group of 5 adults stay two nights and thoroughly enjoyed the property and its location.

You must be prepared to deal with stairs but the property is conveniently located near restaurants, shopping and vineyards. The kitchen/dining area overloooks the Mosel river and the view from the balcony is very beautiful. Bus transportation is two blocks away. Bus to the Bullay train station takes about 10 min and trains from Bullay can take you to many attractions. There is a nice walking path along the river and a pedestrian bridge across the Mosel is just a block away. We did not have a car but found that to be of no consequence as everything we needed was within walking distance. A bakery is just a few meters from the front door if you want pastries for breakfast and there was a small local market close by. We found the town of Zell to be very nice and only wish we had more time to enjoy it.

The bonus is that the higher you climb, the more spectacular the views become; you can even see into the vineyards behind from the top floor. Good to hear you enjoying exploring some of the many great places in the surrounding area, and if you're ever able to come back again I'm sure you'd also enjoy a boat trip along the Mosel from almost outside the front door!

Clean, warm, spacious and good value!

We booked the top floors for three nights between Christmas and new year for 6 adults and 3 children. The apartment was just the right size for us, although if you are bringing more people they have a lower floor they can open up with another bedroom I think. The guy who welcomed us was a top bloke and gave us plenty of info about the house and local area. We never had to ring him for help but he gave us the impression he would have done anything for us! The bedrooms were clean with comfortable beds and we had a nice view of the river from the top floor. There was enough bathrooms for us to have one per couple and they were fine as far as I am aware! Plenty of shower gel shampoo etc. The kitchen and dining area was good we spent the little time we were at home in there. The table was big enough for us all to fit round and play games in the evening. Overall I would say everyone was happy with the house. Certainly there wasn't any complaints and my daughter was quite sad to leave!

As for the location it was great although the village was pretty much shut down for the winter! But we visited both the restaurants that were open, both less than 2 mins walk from the door. The Italian just behind was nice and the owner made us feel very welcome. The Greek restaurant abit further down was outstanding, the food we had from there was probably the highlight of my holiday! We spent a day in cochem and visited the castle which was well worth a visit, the next day we got up early and went to girilay suspension bridge which was one of the main reasons I chose to come to this area. It was also worth a visit. And we went to the roman city of Trier which was good. Really I wanted to see burg Eltz but it was closed. I would possibly come back in the summer as it seems many of the things I wanted to do close for the winter.

To summarise the apartment was great and we had no complaints at all! For the price Its good quality. Thanks!

Zell is quiet in December, but is livened up by the Glühwein party in the town square just before Christmas, and as you say there are a few restaurants which remain open all year. We too love El Grego (the Greek/German restaurant a 2 min walk from our house) - their lamb cutlets melt in your mouth! In December, before Christmas, there are also some lovely Christmas markets to visit locally - Bernkastel-Kues, Trier, Koblenz and the underground one at Traben Trabach being amongst the best. We're pleased to hear that our house manager Thomas was helpful. He is also very knowledgeable about wine, and in the summer is happy to organise wine tasting for guests on his boat. We hope to welcome you back another time so that you can get to visit the beautiful Burg Eltz (a fairy tale castle, open from 25.3.18 - early November). Also if you enjoyed the Geierlay suspension bridge, you'd love the observation tower at nearby Marienberg from where you get great views of the large loop in the Mosel at Zell.

Een ruim huis met veel mogelijkheden

Een grote eetkeuken op de ene verdieping en op de verdieping erboven een luie huiskamer met balkon. Onder de eetverdieping nog een keuken met een TV hoek. Perfect voor ons gezelschap van 3 kinderen en 10 volwassenen. Genoeg badkamers en toiletten. Mooi in het centrum van Zell. Mooie wandelroutes in de omgeving. Een aanrader!

Lovely apartment, beautiful view

This is a very attractive apartment with a spectacular view over the river from the balcony. Very spacious, with comfy beds, plenty of bathrooms to choose from and a lovely large kitchen. It was spotlessly clean, thanks to the efforts of Margot. Right in the centre of Zell with a tourist information centre a couple of minutes walk away.

The only misunderstanding concerned the use of the washing machine. I always book apartments which provide a washer as we like to move around but travel light so tend to wash as we go. Since the washer/dryer in the actual apartment was in a locked room we assumed that we should use the one in the basement. However, when we went to pick up the washing we bumped into Margot who seemed really surprised we were using it and had taken our washed clothes out so that she could use it. She told us not to use the dryer until she had finished as it could blow a fuse. Not a problem, but I hadn't realised we would be sharing it. Since we were out by the time she was finished though, she was kind enough to run our things through the dryer and put them in our apartment.

Zell is an ideal spot for a couple of days. Very small and quiet but pretty and relaxing. It doesn't have a supermarket though so if you come without a car as we did, it is easier to eat out. Our next port of call was Bernkastel-Kues. We had the option of taking the bus (about an hour and a quarter) or taking the boat from just outside the apartment (about 4 hours). In the end we opted for the boat and I'm so glad we did. The journey was really scenic, the time whizzed by and by the time we had something to eat and drink we had arrived. Definitely recommend!

Owner's Response: I'm glad you enjoyed your time in Zell. It is indeed very easy to eat out in town as there are so many restaurants within a few minutes' walk. I'm sorry to hear you didn't manage to find the supermarkets - they are a short bus ride away on the opposite bank of the river - where there is a large Globus hypermarket, Lidl, Aldi and several other large stores. (There is also cheap petrol available for car users at Globus). I'm glad to hear you enjoyed your trip to Bernkastel-Kues. The boat trip does take quite a time due to the number of locks to be passed through! We have purchased the new washing machine and tumble drier downstairs within the last month as having so many beds in the house and, I'm pleased to say, so many guests choosing to stay with us, the washing machines in the house are kept quite busy with all the fast change-overs at this time of year! The new machines in the basement would never have to be shared with other guests, as the smaller apartment (the Rotling) also has its own machine in its kitchen. We hope to welcome you again sometime.

We stayed in the house for 5 days in June 2015 - there were 3 couples and we had plenty of space - the kitchen is fantastic with lovely views over the river mosel as you are dining. The balcony area on the top floor was fantastic for a late night glass of wine/beer at the end of the day looking at the cruisers go by. The location of the house is right in the centre of Zell and the town itself is a perfect base for exploring the area. Would highly recommend and cannot wait to go back again - was the highlight of our 3 week holiday in Germany/Holland this year. - Edwina, Dublin

The old historic town of Zell, situated directly on the Mosel River has a pedestrian area where you can sample many different culinary delights. Zell and the surrounding area have many wine festivals and events from spring time until late autumn. Apart from walking and cycling along the Mosel and in the vineyards, the area offers endless possibilities such as: Adventure Forest, thermal baths, paragliding, water sports, golf, tennis and more. The surrounding 5 to 80 km offers many sightseeing excursions to castles, the steepest vineyards in Europe, cloisters, 2000 year old Roman ruins and Germany's oldest city, Trier, with the world famous Porta Nigra. Directly behind Trier is Luxembourg, France, Belgium and the Netherlands can be reached within a few hours.

The town centre offers a good selection of restaurants and ice cream parlours, within a few minutes' walk. There is also a bakery, an award winning butchers and several fine wine shops. For guests with transport there is a big out of town shopping centre on the opposite river bank with a large Globus supermarket, Aldi, Lidl and other stores.
