Great place to stay with easy access to locality

  • 5 of 5

We have recently returned from a wonderful two weeks at Colle Basse near Draguignan in Provence. When we looked in Sue's visitors book, everybody who stayed there two years ago for a week said they'd be back again for longer, ourselves included...and this year it turns out that everyone has been back, this time for two weeks. And it's no surprise to find that either. Colle Basse is set in acres of pine forest in the stunningly beautiful hillsides of the Var but only a short drive from the busy town of Draguignan and the village of La Motte.

Sue's house was ideally suited to our large family group (eight of us!) and since our visit last year she has built a lovely patio where we enjoyed many balmy barbeque evenings, just a few metres from her spotlessly clean swimming pool. The children, in particular, enjoyed the exceptionally deep diving end and diving board.

This year we were a bit too early to enjoy the fig tree groaning under the weight of its fruit, but every evening just before sunset we were treated to the sight of a family of wild boar foraging just yards from us looking for other things to eat: sadly her grape vines are just too tempting for them!

There's so much to do in the local area whether it's going to a wonderful natural river swimming pool or the spectacular Gorge du Verdon (unbelievable views and not for the faint-hearted if you're at the top but great kayak and pedalo fun at the bottom).

We realised that we could return again and again and still be finding new things to do and places to see.

You can find all these things wherever you spend your holiday in this region, but what you won't find is a host as friendly, accommodating and helpful as Sue and we would love to return, see her again and see how all her projects to make Colle Basse an even better place to stay have developed

From the Owner

We fell in love with this old house because it appears to be remote and in the middle of a wild area, but in fact it's just 10 minutes by car from a big country town. The view from the house is the forest of pine and oak trees at about 100 metres from the house. The house was built in 1792 and I love it.
