Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Badger`s Holt was beyond expectation, a superb kitchen with a centre island and loads of working space. The living room was comfortable with a good selection of DVD`s. The 3 bedrooms were immaculate and the beds were so comfortable. Good bars and a CO-OP supermarket in the village. Liz was very friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble for her. I would gladly recommend this great cottage to anyone. We will be returning. Thank you for a great stay. Gilly & Mike -Doncaster

Great Holiday Retreat in Masham

  • 5 of 5

Our party of four adults stayed at Badgers Holt for one week. The property is located at the back of the owners (Collin and Liz) property but please don't be put off by this.

They greeted us on arrival and went through the property explaining clearly what was on offer. They had even set up a food hamper to welcome us, a nice touch.

We were left alone the entire week but knew, if we needed their assistance, they were close to hand.

The property offers excellent, luxurious, accommodation and could not be faulted. The owners attention to detail was second to none.

We visited many parts of Yorkshire during our stay and Masham proved to be a good base to do this.

All in all a good week away, thanks again to Collin and Liz.

Great property, brilliant owners, super location

  • 5 of 5

We had a long stay at Badgers Holt in the middle of a property move. The cottage is in a great location on the edge of the valley. It is well designed, very comfortable and has everything you need for a short or even longer break. The owners, Liz & Colin, made us very welcome and provided a some essential goods on arrival. During the course of our stay they were helpful and accommodating and even put up a Christmas tree and decorations for us. Masham itself is a vibrant village with interesting shops and plenty of places to eat and drink. Vennells is highly recommended if you want a special celebratory meal. We would highly recommend Badgers Holt for a holiday iin a fabulous part of the country.

A welcome retreat

  • 5 of 5

Clean, light, airy, well equipped, warm, comfortable - it has it all. We had a lovely welcome from Liz and Colin, who had made every effort to make our stay perfect. Thoughtful touches throughout, and while the kitchen was full of everything you could possibly need, there were cupboards for you to put your own food etc. in - so many times we've piled stuff up in a corner when this hasn't been thought of in other places we've stayed. There was a good area to sit outside, which would have been great on sunnier and warmer evenings than October generally offers. Comfortable beds and acres of storage in the bedrooms too! I really want to keep a find like this to myself!

Masham was an excellent base for us to get out and about, and in the town itself we found a very good butcher, whose sausages were so good we bought up the supply to bring home. We had a fabulous Sunday lunch at the Black Sheep Bistro, and enjoyed a tour at the Theakston's brewery - all within walking distance. We had other great days out at Fountains Abbey, Brimham rocks, Hackfall woods, all of which looked glorious in the autumn colours; and the Forbidden corner, where we walked miles (mostly in circles), got lost, soaked and thoroughly confused - just as expected.

Can't wait to come back.

Excellent Holiday Accommodation!

  • 5 of 5

We have recently returned from a lovely fortnights holiday at 'Badgers Holt'. We were greeted with a lovely warm welcome from Liz and Colin. An excellent welcome pack awaited us with extra thought given to our two children! 'Badgers Holt' was beautifully designed to a hi-spec and extremely clean. The kitchen was very well equipped (probably the best we've had!). It was lovely to have little extras like the hand soap and cream in both the bathrooms and downstairs toilet! Liz and Colin were very helpful and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. Masham was an easy ten minute stroll away and an excellent location for travelling around. We would certainly recommend 'Badgers Holt' and hope to return again. We visited some great places - The forbidden corner is a must. The Ripon Museums and James Herriot Museum in Thirsk are very interesting. Wensleydale Creamery is a good place to visit - lots of cheese to try before you buy! and Brymor ice cream parlour too, never had so many flavours to choose from! The Bruce Arms in Masham serve super food as does The Black Sheep Brewery - the tour is a must too! Thank you to Liz and Colin for making our holiday relaxing and feeling at home in your holiday cottage.

Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

Masham

In the last reaches of the Pennines the river Ure twists and turns with the undulating landscape. The river is now so full and wide that bridging is difficult and sites of crossings are route centres, around which important local settlements were founded. One such settlement is the small market town of Masham, a ‘Gateway to The Dales’. An ancient market town since 1393 with one of the largest market places in the north of England, now faced by stylish Georgian buildings which surround the central market cross.

The once famed annual sheep sales, where over 80,000 head would be sold in just three days still continues to this day during September, albeit on a much smaller scale, as does one of the North’s largest steam rallies in July. Now most famous for the Theakston’s and Black Sheep breweries, both owned by the Theakston family who first started brewing in 1827 and warmly welcome visitors to watch them ply their crafts and sample the rewards of their labour.

Further Details:

Wensleydale

One of the largest dales with the river Ure beginning its seaward journey some six miles west of the small market town of Hawes in the heart of the great Pennine divide, a mere stones throw from the source of the river Eden which chooses to flow west to the distant Solway Firth.

The valley is at first narrow with the moorland steeps and slopes of Abbotside Common, Shunner Fell and Widdale Fell converging on the rushing river to leave a slender corridor of cultivated meadowland undulating between. So soon the valley changes and the river slows to a lazy meander as it reaches Hawes.

The fells retreat behind their many escarpments and with each mile the pastures climb higher up the valley sides, meadows grow richer, woodland appears and the dale is softer, verdant and pleasing to the eye. With passing miles the fells break to form stately, isolated peaks such as Addlebrough and Penhill allowing tributaries to fill the river and other dales to approach.

Now on past the larger market town of Leyburn in the lower dale and out to join the Cover where the fells all but disappear and the valley is rich and fertile as it spreads in minor undulations to join the Vale of York.

Such a diverse dale with natural wonders over all its length. The highest waterfall in England at Hardraw, the shortest river tributary in the Bain flowing from the legendary Lake Semerwater to the Roman town of Bainbridge, the magnificent falls at Aysgarth and other minor falls too numerous to mention. Majestic history in the castles of Bolton and Middleham, stately homes and many country halls. Villages and smaller settlements aplenty, some snuggled into the hillsides on high escarpments, other sitting close to the river but all unique and some acclaimed for beauty on a national scale.
