Overview

About the property

Villa at the edge of Gaucin village, near Ronda, Andalucia, Malaga province, Spain - Infinity Pool Amongst Palms & Rocks In 2 Acres Of Mature Mediterannean Garden On The Edge Of Gaucin

Djebel Musa is a romantic, colourful, beautifully maintained, architect-designed villa with an infinity pool. The garden is a mixture of mature exotic palms amongst rocks and shrubs as well as wild olives and carobs filled with songbirds on a hillside at the southern edge of the pretty 'white village' of Gaucin.

"The best view we have seen in Spain" said one travel company. "A truly stunning property with 'wow factor'!"

Gaucin is 600 metres above sea level and the villa and pool afford spectacular open views down the Genal River valley to the Mediterranean and North Africa beyond.

It is maintained and equipped to a high standard.

Double-height open-plan living room with minstrels' gallery leads to a large covered veranda. Archway to the large dining room which leads to its own covered dining terrace.

4 of the bedrooms and the main living rooms have French windows onto their own terrace or balcony. The 4th and 5th bedrooms are set up as a studio apartment that can be let separately outside the summer season. There are other terraces around the garden.

Terracotta floors, bright rugs, Moroccan pots, comfortable seating inside and out, Satellite TV, WiFi, flowers, views, birds, sunshine!

A few extra notes:

- We have wonderful gardeners, an efficient pool-cleaner, a charming, cheerful and extremely helpful House Manager, and two lovely girls who clean.

- Parking is easy as we are on the edge of the village.

- There is a new flat screen television and we have Internet & satellite television.

- The village centre is only a few minutes walk away for tapas, restaurants, shops.

About Mark & Star Bennett

Living in London, we live busy urban lives with our 4 children. One of our aims is to get away more often to the stunning countryside, climate, wildlife and food of the mountains around Gaucin in Southern Spain.

Arriving at the villa in Gaucin lifts our hearts and fills us with energy. Opening the balcony doors in the morning is a special moment every day... or lighting a log fire on a cool winter evening with a book or a film after a home cooked dinner...

We like to cook, eat good food - in or out, walk in the countryside, watch the amazing bird life in this part of Spain and enjoy the friendliness of everyone in this pleasant village. And if we really want the bustle of the beach, its only 40 minutes away.

Mark & Star Bennett purchased this villa in 2014

Why Mark & Star Bennett chose Gaucín

We first came to Gaucin in 1997 and fell in love with the village and the area and rented a villa here the following year too. 17 years on we finally decided to find a villa that combined all the beauty and peace of the countryside yet with the convenience of being in the village with its character and amenities a short walk from the front door.

We are very lucky to have found this wonderful villa which combines our need for open air, countryside and wide vistas with village life. The architect designed the villa to maximise the extraordinary views and ts location.

What makes this villa unique

We love being in the countryside (that's all we can see from the house) and can walk into it on "GR" paths 1 minute from the front door - and there is the lush and private garden too. But if we need a fresh loaf of bread, seafood from the village market or a tapas lunch its just a 5 minute walk away... The peace and privacy of this villa match any that we have been to before - but here, we don't have to drive anywhere once we have arrived.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Stuart - 2013.

This is a gorgeous house. The interior furnishing is homely but extremely stylish with a strong Moroccan influence. The house has everything needed for a most enjoyable stay. The kitchen is very well appointed and there is an electric barbeque on the terrace. Wifi and freeview tv with dvd/cd players are also provided. The first thing you notice about the exterior is the stunning view to the coast. On clear days when there is no heat haze both Gibraltar and the north Moroccan coast are visible. There probably isn't a house with a better view in the whole of Spain! The infinity pool is located down some steps to the garden, not surprisingly the view from the pool is breathtaking! My family and I had a very happy week at Djebel Musa. We would not hesitate to stay there again if the opportunity arose.

Reidun - 2013

Our Christmas Holiday.

A perfect location, even out-of-season. Beautiful view to Gibraltar, walking in wooded hills endless. Mostly local visitors for the holidays. Enough restaurants open in town and surroundings, 1/2 hr drive from golf and shopping on the coast.

George - 2013

We visited the villa in May 2013. It is stunning. The interior is exceptionally comfortable, a wonderful blend of colours and textures; the views from the balcony and pool down the valley and across to the rock of Gibraltar and the mountains of Morocco are breathtaking. We found it difficult to tear ourselves away. It would be a great place for a group of friends, having lots of alfresco eating space and gorgeous, colourful gardens and being only a stones throw from the eateries of charming Gaucin. Its a great place to potter back to after a glass of wine and tapas. We have every intention of returning for another trip.

General comments from house guest book:

"I love your house, I love all the different colours, I love the different corners, I love the spirit of it. The view is an ever changing spectacle - in fact its so breathtaking no photo can do it justice".

"Delightful, you have created a little oasis, - a deer came to the pool to drink, a lynx came one evening - a rock lizard."

"Every single moment has been a moment of deep delight and pleasure".

"Our 6th holiday here in this paradise villa."

"Everything we've ever wanted from a villa holiday - and we've been looking for 30 years!"

"Thank you for allowing us to share in your special piece of paradise".

"There is something for everyone here. So much beauty in and beyond the house"

Coast/Beach:

The Mediterranean coast (Costa del Sol) is under 40 minutes' drive (beaches at Sabinillas, Duquesa, Estepona...), the Atlantic coast (beaches near Tarifa) about 1:20 hours drive.

Sotogrande Beach Club is about 50 mins. The famous golf club of Valderama is also 50 mins.

Most beaches have beach bars. Windsurfing (boards can be hired) and Kite Surfing at Tarifa.

Travel:

Malaga airport is 1.10 to 1.40 hours (115km), and Gibraltar airport 50 mins to 1.20 hours (59km). Some clients also fly to Jerez. We recommend car hire but some clients do come here by public transport or taxi (though cheaper to rent a car).

Distances:

5 minutes walk to nearest shops & restaurants. Ronda 45 minutes (37km), Jimena (23km), Sotogrande 37km, San Pedro 56km, Jerez 145km, Seville 182km, Malaga 118km. Estepona 40 minutes (40km), Duquesa 40 minutes (35km). Jerez, Tarifa, Coto Donana, Cuevas de Pileta etc all within reach for a day out as is Tangier, Morocco. Tangier is a short ferry crossing from Tarifa or Algeciras. There is a big Carrefour at Estepona and large shopping mall at Canada just outside Marbella.

Further Details:

Although we are part of the village, we are on its edge at the top of the hillside so its extremely private. Gaucin is one of the attractive 'white villages' of the Serrania de Ronda. Perched below the ruins of a Moorish castle at about 650m altitude Gaucin has marvellous views of over 100km on clear days.

As one of the larger villages, it has more facilities than most others, particularly in season. There are restaurants, tapas bars, a flamenco bar, small food shops and an ATM all within walking distance. The pace of life is still pretty slow & traditional for the local people.

The area is wonderful: small villages to explore, caves, excellent bird-watching all year round - not forgetting the spring/autumn bird migration, wild flowers in spring, a street 'bull-run' at Easter (not everyone's taste but part of local culture), tennis, walking, riding. Ronda is interesting historically & also has real charm - its the big town in the Serrania and local people go there for everything they can't do locally.

Not far away are the beaches of Estepona, the Atlantic coast, golf courses, Puerto Banus, Marbella and the historic cities of Sevilla, Granada and Cordoba.

Birds seen from the terrace include:

Griffon Vulture, Short-Toed Eagle, Kestrel, Lesser Kestrel, Sparrow Hawk, Booted Eagle, Bonelli's Eagle, Cuckoo, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Bee-Eater, House Martin, Barn Swallow, Common Swift, Pallid Swift, Tawny Owl, Red-Legged Partridge, Sardinian Warbler, Blackcap Warbler, Blue Tit, Great Tit, House Sparrow, Spotless Starling, Nightingale, Blackbird, Goldfinch, Greenfinch, Chaffinch, Serin, Jay, Raven, Alpine Swift, Cetti's Warbler, Chiffchaff, Common Buzzard, Crag Martin, Golden Eagle, Goshawk, Honey Buzzard, Black Kite, Hobby, Jackdaw, Jay, Pied Flycatcher, Red Rumped Swallow, Robin, Sand Martin, Yellow Wagtail, Wood Pigeon, Willow Warbler, Swift, Spanish Sparrow, Pied Flycatcher, Pied Wagtail... Over 50 species seen from balcony overall and 34 species seen over a 2 week period in spring.

Notes:
Parents with young children should consider that there are steep drops beyond the pool and staircases which would require very careful supervision of toddlers & children at all times. The 4th & 5th bedrooms (the Studio) are part of the main house (outside access, down 13 steps). Let together as part of the house as the 4th & 5th bedrooms in summer, it can be let separately out of the summer season (Owners Direct reference s29493 for more details/photos). There is a terrace overlooking the garden with table and chairs - watch vultures & eagles soaring overhead. Its an exceptional place for bird-watching (see list). There is a gas BBQ. From this terrace steps lead down to the pool from where you can look out over the gorgeous wild countryside of the Genal valley to Gibraltar, almond blossom in Jan/Feb, and on clear days, the mountains of North Africa. There are no close neighbours so it is very private, secluded and not overlooked. The pool has sunbeds, sun umbrellas and shaded area with table and chairs. The pool has an underwater ledge where you can stand and look out to Africa where the Rif Mountains are visible on clear days. Utility Room: Washing machine, iron, ironing board etc Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: House manager. Maid service can be arranged on request. Linen etc changed weekly. All linen and towels provided. Pool maintained and cleaned during the week in the season & gardener visits early morning to water pots in hot weather. Other services can be supplied on request. Pool towels. Other: Large dining room seats 10, beams, antique dresser. Arch to kitchen & sitting room. Main rooms and terraces have a 180 degree view of the surrounding countryside from terraces or balcony. There is a piano.

**THIS PLACE IS SPECIAL**

  • 5 of 5

We have traveled extensively worldwide and naturally have our very favorites. This was our first time to Gaucin and this Villa and now it is on our favorites list.

We created some more special memories with our children, their spouses and our four grandchildren (ages 12-16). The village is totally enjoyable and authentic. If you like an area with a lot of tourists, this is not for you. If you like some authentic areas with really nice people -- try this place. We visited Gibraltar (you can see it from the Villa!), Ronda and several other places nearby. On several days, we all voted to stay in Gaucin to just enjoy the small shops, bars, and of course the Villa and the pool!

The owner (Mark) was extremely helpful in the planning phase and while we were there by keeping us informed on how to get there, contacts in Gaucin and recommendations on what we should consider. There is a lot of information in the books they left on the dining table about what to do, treks and much more. The housekeeper (Esther) also came by several times to assist and was immediately responsive when I called her. The gardener was also very polite and helpful.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Dave & Shirl

Beautiful property, spectacular views, friendly town

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful and interesting property with every facility you need for your holiday. The view from the villa is something else, absolutely breathtaking - you can never tire of it! Would recommend this to anyone looking for something away from the usual coastal tourist traps, the mountain drive itself is an experience! We hope to visit again in the years to come.

Superb property in a quiet location with beautiful views

  • 5 of 5

Villa was spacious and well furnished and made to feel very welcome by both the owners and the manager who visited us. The ideal place for a family or group gathering to get away from it all in a lovely small town.

Quite simply the best week of my year!

  • 5 of 5

We come every year but have not left a review for a while. Djebel Musa is a beautiful, peaceful haven with stunning views located a 5 minute walk from places to eat or drink should you wish to venture further. The space is so well designed that you can spend as much time relaxing alone as you wish but can also make use of the large, outdoor communal spaces when you all want to get together and socialise against the backdrop of views that stretch to the rock of Gibraltar and the north African coast beyond. The tough part is you want to come every year:)

It is a stunning villa, so beautiful from every vantage point and vista

  • 5 of 5

There were 8 women in our group and we have traveled together on numerous occasions but this place was so outstanding in many ways. The decor was just delightful with so many artistic touches to every space. The house was very comfortable with plenty of accommodations for everyone and lots of room to spread out or to be together. We enjoyed walking in the village and cooking most of our meals. The dining room was lovely and then there were two outside dining areas that were comfortable with beautiful views. The landscaping around the house was delightful, lovely pool although it was too cold to swim when we were there. The views of the Rock of Gibraltar and Morocco were just stunning. We all hope we can return someday.

Spectacular!

  • 5 of 5

Just a fabulous villa. So very comfy and cozy. The views were breathtaking. You can clearly see Gibraltar and the Mediterranean. The villa was well equipped with everything you need. The village of Gaucin was beautiful and had some great restaurants. Plus there is so much to see in the area. The spectacular village of Ronda, Seville is only a 2 hour drive. The Kings Path is about an hour away. It is also a quick drive to Gibraltar. One word of caution, our friends stopped in Estepona to buy some groceries on their way from Malaga and their car was broken into and their luggage stolen. They had a hatchback car and the luggage was not concealed. So if you are traveling you must conceal your luggage and leave no personal belongings in the car. Besides that, it was a wonderful week. I wish we could have stayed longer. I would love to return again!

Owner's Response: Thanks for your kind review. As you describe, visiting the Costa Del Sol has its urban challenges and we are sorry to hear about your friends' experience. Thankfully Gaucin is a world away up in the hills. We do hope you come and stay again.
