About Philip Trafford

A working farmer on a small village farm with sheep and ducks. I live on the farm with my wife who looks after the cottages and we enjoy meeting people from all over the world.

Philip Trafford purchased this cottage in 1975

Why Philip Trafford chose Bassenthwaite

These properties are recent barn conversions belonging the family which farmed here many years ago. This is now a sheep and duck farm. We no longer have cattle. But plenty of cattle are in the surrounding fields.

It is an ideal situation for touring and visiting the lakes, but tucked away in a quiet and peaceful village setting, by a stream with our comical and famous indian runner ducks. (new ducklings hatching at least twice a year) Keswick is only 6 miles as is Cockermouth, and the whole lakes are within easy reach from here with only a short journey.

Alternatively you could leave the car here and walk to waterfalls, go bird watching, stroll down country lanes, climb fells and mountains. Visit Animal Farm (one mile away) Osprey Viewpoint (3 miles) Mirehouse Country House, and much more. Local Inn only a short stroll up the riverside for good food and drinks.

What makes this cottage unique

You may be in luck to see a lamb being born in the nearby barns (Feb-April) or ducklings hatching, lambing time in the Spring is most exciting, so you may be in luck to see a lamb being born as we do the lambing inside.

Letting the ducks out of their shed every morning and collecting the eggs .

Children may enjoy skimming stone on the stream, catching minnows , playing pooh sticks, building dams, playing in the woods making camps, just real old fashioned FREE games , LIKE IT USED TO BE!! Leave the computer games behind.!!

Many parents have commented that the best thing about the holiday is the fact that the children can run around freely, which sadly they can not do nowadays generally.

There is also a village green where ball games can be played, football cricket and the rest. Short and long walks all from the door.

Perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and I and our Springer Spaniel, Kobi, had a lovely time at Rebecca Puddle-duck cottage. The family were lovely, and the cottage was very cosy and surprisingly spacious given how small it first appeared! Everything we needed was there. We joined Max and Paddy (Keswick's famous Springer Spaniels) on a charity walk for Eden Pet Rescue and Kobi had a ball along with 50 other dogs! The cottage was the perfect place to come back to and relax. Thank you for a lovely weekend. Jane Malcolm

Ferienwohnung auf dem Bauernhof

  • 5 of 5

Owner's Response: Sorry I do not understand the German, but I do know they were a lovely couple and we enjoyed having them here in our Puddle duck cottages. They visited several places in the Lake district and had great weather. Their grand finale was to go to the SheepFest at Cockermouth which is a fantastic eshibition of everything to do with Wool, including the real sheep! They are thinking of returning next year so that says it all.

The Lakes are all in easy reach of Bassenthwaite and you can have a full packed day with many things to do and see . The nearest is of course, Bassenthwaite, and the furthest is Windermere which is only one hour away. Keswick( 6miles) is a bustling tourist town and is full of gift shops cafes , supermarkets, excellent Theatre, as is also Cockermouth, (6 miles). There is a local Distillery only 2 miles from here, and there are marvellous country walks and hikes just from the door. Skiddaw mountain being a great attraction for climbers, and is only one mile away Dodd Wood is just 3 milesa from here which is ;popular for viewing the Osprey, and great walks up to Dodd summit,

or alternatively walk to the Lake visiting the ancient St Begas Church situated almost on the shore of Bassenthwaite lake. A fantastic place to visit. Lakeland Animal Park is one

mile from here and well worth a visit with lots to see, and an indoor area, and restaurant. The Borrowdale Valley has so much to see, it is a real must, with Surprise View, The Bowder Stone,, The Slate Mine, with Via Ferrata into the mountains, and you can take in four lakes en route, driving over the Honister Pass with outstanding views. This is a real must if you have not much time while you are here. Often people and children alike can just enjoy staying around the village here, and enjoying sitting by the stream, or playing in the river, or just relaxing.

15 miles to coast . Allonby village has a nice beach and Silloth or St Bees.
