About Philip Trafford

A working farmer on a small village farm with sheep and ducks. I live on the farm with my wife who looks after the cottages and we enjoy meeting people from all over the world.

Philip Trafford purchased this cottage in 1975

Why Philip Trafford chose Bassenthwaite

These properties are recent barn conversions belonging the family which farmed here many years ago. This is now a sheep and duck farm. We no longer have cattle. But plenty of cattle are in the surrounding fields.

It is an ideal situation for touring and visiting the lakes, but tucked away in a quiet and peaceful village setting, by a stream with our comical and famous indian runner ducks. (new ducklings hatching at least twice a year) Keswick is only 6 miles as is Cockermouth, and the whole lakes are within easy reach from here with only a short journey.

Alternatively you could leave the car here and walk to waterfalls, go bird watching, stroll down country lanes, climb fells and mountains. Visit Animal Farm (one mile away) Osprey Viewpoint (3 miles) Mirehouse Country House, and much more. Local Inn only a short stroll up the riverside for good food and drinks.

What makes this cottage unique

You may be in luck to see a lamb being born in the nearby barns (Feb-April) or ducklings hatching, lambing time in the Spring is most exciting, so you may be in luck to see a lamb being born as we do the lambing inside.

Letting the ducks out of their shed every morning and collecting the eggs .

Children may enjoy skimming stone on the stream, catching minnows , playing pooh sticks, building dams, playing in the woods making camps, just real old fashioned FREE games , LIKE IT USED TO BE!! Leave the computer games behind.!!

Many parents have commented that the best thing about the holiday is the fact that the children can run around freely, which sadly they can not do nowadays generally.

There is also a village green where ball games can be played, football cricket and the rest. Short and long walks all from the door.

absolutely lovely

  • 5 of 5

Although short, we had a great time staying in Alison's lovely cottage. It has everything an idyllic childhood can offer -- a stream with ducks in, trees to climb, swings, animals and a fireplace. The house is cozy, clean and convenient with many attractions within 30 mins driving. My daughter said that we had to go back there because she already named the ducks.

Owner's Response: Hi Thank you for your kind review about our Jemima Puddle duck cottage holiday. At this moment in time I can just hear a hen chuckling as it is telling us it has laid an egg!! The next job is finding where it has laid it on the farm! The Spring time is a good time to visit the farm when we are lambing and of course there is always our ducks waddling too and fro to the stream which are fascinating to watch. We have some ducklings hatching this week which is always exciting. Bassenthwaite village is a fairly quiet little hamlet tucked away under Skiddaw mountain,(a strenous climb for the fit ones) but so easy to access all the lakes. . We also have a good pub just a few yards away for food. Hope we may see you and your children again soon.

Wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week in the Jemima Puddle Duck cottage from 4 to 11 March 2018 and had a great time. Alison the host couldn't do more to help make our stay such a memorable one. The ducks were in great form and we even managed to have some duck eggs for breakfast and there were many lambs born throughout the week which were sooo cute! We will be booking the cottage again soon!

Quiet, clean, laid back. Just what we were looking for. The pub about 100 meters has good food , limited hours. Dinner only. So pack some supplies for lunch and breakfast. Walk through the country side was beautiful. Hostess was very helpful.
