House in Gurnard, Nr Cowes, Isle of Wight, England - Peaceful, Beachfront Location, 100m From Beach And Pleasant, Flat Walk To Cowes 1.75 Mile Away

The Ark is a newly renovated coastal cottage, situated on a slip road to the beach, sailing club and Watersedge cafe. It is in the popular village of Gurnard, a very friendly and welcoming place and somewhere you'll want to come back to time after time. The Ark has recently been restored and is full of quirky charm with its wonky walls and sloping wooden floors, yet has all the modern luxuries and conveniences you would expect from holiday accommodation. It enjoys lovely sea views and beautifully sunny rooms and is close to cafes, pubs, shops and restaurants as well as with in very easy reach (by foot and car) of Cowes, the Mecca of world sailing. If you are looking for a quaint but modern cottage, close to amenities yet within a peaceful setting then The Ark is for you. Locals and passers by, who have watched The Ark been transformed, have all commented on how 'magical', 'special' and wonderful it now is. We hope, once you've visited, that you will think so too.

About the Owner

Hello

I have lived on the Island for about 20 years now. Originally the plan had been to only stay a few years but there is something about the Island that grabs you and draws you in, which is why people return year after year to holiday here.

I live near to The Ark so I am able to help with any problems or answer questions. I can also provide information about places to go as well as let you into a few local secrets about the best things to see and do.

Whether you end up staying at The Ark or not, please make sure you visit The Island at some point. It is a very special and unique place and I'm sure you will fall for its charm.

It is an idyllic cottage in a beautiful setting. The views of the ever changing Solent are spectacular.....

The Ark has been really well renovated and all the quirky little details add to the interest.....

We had a lovely stay made all the better for the superb accommodation...

Thank you for making us feel so welcome....

The Back decked area can be a real sun trap!

Very comfortable and quiet....

The views from the windows were brilliant, especially the sunsets...

We feel like we've walked right round the Island...

There is so much to do, we have been horse riding, chair lift at The Needles, The spa at Lakeside Hotel, Lots of swimming and walks....

Places we have enjoyed: Osbourne House and it's secluded beach, The IOW zoo, the coastal path from Ventnor to the Botanic Gardens and The Blue Crab restaurant at Yarmouth...lovely seafood.

Perfect place, perfect location, we'll be back!!

Fabulous place- highly recommended

  • 5 of 5

The Ark was a wonderful place to stay; Kate has it decorated beautifully and it comes complete with everything you could possibly need for your stay. It's location is great, close to coffee and breakfasts and a local pub. The views from the windows are fabulous! Kate was really helpful in directing us to all the places we were interested in and we loved our time on the Isle of Wight. Don't forget to visit Osborne House- it's amazing.

Clean, comfortable, cosy and beautifully presented. Exemplary customer support.

  • 4 of 5

This is a distinctly quirky property, excellently situated, some 70 yards from the sea and with interesting sea views. Make use of the telescope provided.

Location instructions were excellent.

Parking is in the cul-de-sac outside the property.

This is a totally reworked hut giving two person accommodation to the highest standards. The kitchen section is comprehensive and modern although both a cafe and restaurant are within very easy stroll. The style is elegant, consistent and practical. Integrated design flows through every room from the entrance to the rear deck.

Caveats.

Due to the nature of the original property, we have flooring on several levels, some even sloping and a variety of headroom issues.

At six foot plus, this meant life required care and was sporting. My wife had no such issues.

We fully intend to return.

I.O.W the Ark Gurnard

  • 5 of 5

The whole two weeks was brilliant. The Ark was exactly as it was portrayed in the pictures. The views from all the windows over the Solent were fantastic as were the sunsets. The ark itself was clean and very well presented, very comfortable a real home from home. the owner Kate has been brilliant from the first contact e-mail to the warm and friendly welcome on our arrival day, nothing was too much trouble for her and she was a font of local knowledge from places to eat to what to see and even special events that would be happening during our stay. She made us feel like friends that were coming to stay rather than just guests. the welcome pack of wine, flowers and chocolates was very much appreciated. If you are looking for a little bolt hole for two then look no further than the Ark I thoroughly recommend it. My wife and I felt very relaxed and chilled after our two weeks and Gurnard is an excellent base from which to explore not only the north, but the whole of the island. We especially enjoyed our day at Osborne house. Monkey haven and the military tank museum are also well worth a visit , As is the Brading roman villa museum.

The Ark - the perfect base for a relaxing holiday

  • 5 of 5

The Ark is a great base for a couple wanting a peaceful holiday on the Isle of Wight. A lot of thought has gone into the property which is well equipped with lots of nice touches which made us feel at home.

The property has great views of the boats on the Solent, and is just a few seconds away from the sea. A pleasant coastal stroll takes you in to Cowes, and The Ark is well positioned to explore all parts of the island.

Kate made us feel very welcome and we had a wonderfully relaxing week here. We hope to return.

Location

From the Owner

I have owned The Ark for 3 years. It was pretty much derelict and something of an eyesore in a beautiful, quaint place. Although The Ark has planning permission for a 2 storey house I felt strongly that I didn't want to ruin the character of the road and area. I decide to restore and modernise the existing building and although frustrating and difficult at times, we are really happy with the result. The positive comments from locals and passers-by have made it all worthwhile. Yes, The Ark has uneven floors, wonky walls and low ceilings in places. BUT it also has wonderful sea views, light and sunny rooms and quirky charm.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

The Ark is less than 100m from Gurnard beach and sea front. The beach is a mixture of sand, shingle and rocks depending on tides. Cowes is a flat and very pleasant, boat watching 25min walk (1.75 miles) away.

The Isle of Wight has a multitude of beaches to suit all tastes and ages. It also has miles of beautiful coastal walks, one of which passes The Ark's front door.

Please note that between May and September many beaches do not allow dogs onto them.

Travel:

You can get to the Isle of Wight via foot or passenger ferry.

Red Funnel travel from Southampton to East Cowes, Wightlink travel from either Portsmouth to Fishbourne (20min drive) or Lymington to Yarmouth.

If coming by foot you can take the Red Jet from Southampton to Cowes (and then take a taxi to The Ark) or catch the Hover from Southsea to Ryde or Fast Cat from Portsmouth Harbour to Ryde (Ryde is a 30 min drive)

Distances:

The Ark is in the village of Gurnard, Cowes is a 5 minute drive and Newport is 10 mins away. The Island is only 25 miles by 13 miles so nowhere is far and everything is within easy reach.

Further Details:

Within 100m of The Ark is a wonderful seafront cafe, The Watersedge, serving breakfast, lunch, cakes, refreshments and ice-creams. Also within 100m is a lovely pub with sea views (log fires in Winter). Within a 10 minute walk is a convenience store, newsagent and the newly opened Portland Inn with its warm and friendly atmosphere and delicious food. A bit further on is Little Gloster restaurant (when the tide is low you can walk along the beach to it).

In Cowes you will find an abundance of cafes, restaurants, pubs and bars - something to suit every taste.

Around the Island are a host of places to eat and visit, far too many to mention here. Details of 'our favourites' can be found in The Ark.

Facilities

From the Owner

Gurnard is filled with 'Enid Blyton' charm and famous for its incredible sunsets which you can watch from The Ark's sofa. The locals are very friendly and welcoming and even when Gurnard becomes busy in the summer months, it never feels crowded or commercial. Although small, Gurnard has a convenience store, a wonderful seafront café, 2 food-serving pubs and The Little Gloster restaurant. It is a beautiful, pleasant walk into Cowes, the world famous sailing town, with its variety of independent shops and abundance of bars, cafes and restaurants (There is also a Sainsburys and large Co-Op). Within a 10 min drive is Newport, the Island's main town with its high st stores and within a 30mins drive are Yarmouth, Ryde, Shanklin and Ventnor - in fact the whole Island is within easy reach.
