Cosy Cottage In The Heart Of Staithes

Overview

Property

Updated: 30-Nov-2016
Cottage in Staithes, North Yorkshire Moors, - Quiet location, 2 minutes walk from the beach and local amenities

High Winds is a traditional Staithes cottage, with a modern kitchen and recently refurbished bathroom. The ground floor is open plan, so no one needs to be stuck away in the kitchen! The first floor has a twin bedroom and the bathroom, and the second floor is taken up with the beautiful master bedroom with exposed stone walls and lovely views. A travel cot, high chair and changing mat are available. There are electric heaters in the rooms and also a log burner in the lounge. There is a self contained patio to the front of the cottage with a "bistro" style table and chairs and an additional self contained yard to the rear with access from the kitchen. The cottage is in a quiet location just off the High Street, but with easy access to local shops, pubs and restaurants and only a short walk to the harbour. Short term parking is available for unloading, and there is car parking available at the top of the village, about a 5 minute walk from the cottage (charges apply). A maximum of 2 dogs (depending on size) are welcome. Have a look at our FaceBook page "High Winds Cottages"!

About the Owner

Hello! My family and I fell in love with Staithes a few years ago when we came to visit, looking for somewhere to stay that allowed us to bring our two border collies. We bought High Winds at the end of 2012, and haven't regretted a moment of owning a cottage in such a beautiful and friendly part of the world. Although we were based in the Peak District which in itself is a beautiful part of the world, my husband is from Yorkshire and we have always loved the scenery around the North Yorkshire Moors and coast. In fact we love Staithes so much that in August 2015 we moved to the village lock, stock and barrel!! Our two boys aged 14 and 18 also love the area and often used to bring friends with them if we came to stay in the cottage. Finlay is now at school in Whitby, so his new mates are on the doorstep and even though Zach, our elder son, is now at college in Penrith studying Forestry, he loves coming back for weekends. We hope you will enjoy it as much as we do!

Eva.

Perfect Weekend Getaway

  • 4 of 5

Just returned from a lovely weekend break at High Winds and thoroughly enjoyed it. The cottage has a lovely feel to it and has everything you need if you do just want to stay in. We visited nearby Scarborough & Whitby and it was great to return on an evening and start the Wood Burner. Eva has been great from start to finish and I can't thank her enough for how easy all this has been.

Only think to consider with Staithes, and that is your own mobility, Staithes has parking restrictions (rightly so) so you get 40 mins in the High Street to load/unload and have to return you car to the top of the hill which is fine so long as one in the party can get up and down.

Overall a great stay and I have great memories of the weekend.

Thanks

Andy

Charming cottage in a perfect location

  • 5 of 5

4 nights Tuesday - Saturday March 2016

A beautiful cosy cottage in a perfect location with everything that you need,

This lovely village has everything you need for a quiet relaxing break, With amazing views and great walks and not forgetting the welcoming pubs for a well deserved drink or a bite to eat. The butchers shop has that bacon & Sausages for that full English breakfast. The beach is just what you need for a morning walk with the dog.

We will certainly be visiting again and will be recommending High winds to our Friends.

Eva was great to deal with from our initial enquiry though to booking and during our stay.

Thank You again Eva

Great cottage, great location

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed at High Winds (May bank holiday) and loved the cottage, especially the log fire. The wife and kids enjoyed the WIFI so they could upload all the pictures they took of Staithes. We will defiantly be booking again!

Relaxing Break

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely loved the cottage. It's in a great location, near the centre of the old village. We had a lovely, relaxing break with our two dogs, walking along the beaches at low tide. We will definitely be back!

Location

From the Owner

We love taking the dogs for walks along the cliff tops, coming back for a bacon sandwich with bacon from the village butchers. Everyone in the village is so friendly and helpful. The boys love wandering around Whitby, while we find somewhere to sit and have a drink and watch the world go by... The Moors are just fantastic whatever the weather.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Teesside at 35 Miles Nearest Train : Saltburn at 8 Miles Nearest Beach : Staithes at 500 Metres Car: recommended

Coast/Beach:

High Winds is a 2 minute walk from the harbour and beach in Staithes, about 8 miles or 15 minutes drive from Sandsend beach to the south and about 10 miles from Saltburn beach to the north.

Travel:

The nearest airport is Teesside, which is about 35 miles away. While not absolutely essential, a car is certainly recommended for getting about the area. The nearest train stations are in Whitby and Saltburn and there is a regular bus service.

Distances:

The nearest towns are Whitby, which is about 10 miles south of Staithes, and Saltburn, which is about the same distance to the north.

Further Details:

Historically Staithes (pronounced “Steers” by the locals) was an important fishing community and was the home of Captain James Cook during his apprenticeship before he joined the Navy. Staithes has always been popular with painters and was the base for a group of artists who became known simply as the "Staithes Group" in the 19th and 20th centuries. Artists continue to live and work in the village and the Staithes Festival of Arts & Heritage, which was launched in September 2012, has now become an annual event. Staithes is of course also home to the children's television series "Old Jack's Boat", starring Bernard Cribbins and Salty the dog!

For eating and drinking in the village there are three dog friendly pubs plus two small restaurants, a number of cafes and, of course, a fish and chip shop.

There are a few small shops in the village selling a variety of wares and holiday essentials, including an excellent butchers. There is also Whitby Seafish at the top of the hill, selling a wonderful selection of local fish.

Staithes is set right on the Cleveland Way and there are some lovely walks for people of all ages and abilities either northwards towards Boulby cliffs and Saltburn or south towards Runswick Bay, Sandsend and Whitby - famous for its beautiful black jet, its Abbey and connections with Dracula and, more recently for being a Goth Mecca!

The North York Moors railway is close by, as is "Heartbeat" country including Goathland (or "Aidensfield"), the station of which was also used as Hogwarts Station in the Harry Potter films.

There are plenty of National Trust and English Heritage sites to visit, such as Fountains Abbey and Helmsley Castle - we always used to love it there when our boys were younger, because they couldn't break it!

Dalby Forest has a variety of attraction; as well walking through the beautiful scenery of places like Bridestones Moor, there is a visitors centre, Go Ape, cycle hire and trails.

We have plenty of leaflets to help you!
