Cottage in Branthill, Nr. Wells-Next-the-Sea, NR 23 1SB, North Norfolk, England - Lovely Peaceful Rural Location And Close To The Coast

Canary Cottage is a cosy yet spacious single storey cottage which sleeps two people. It is set on a working arable farm on the Holkham Estate 2.5 miles from the renowned seaside town of Wells-next-the-Sea with its lovely beach, pine woods and characterful shopping streets. The cottage enjoys views stretching over fields and into Holkham Park (ancestral home to Lord Leicester) and also over its historic farm buildings. This area is a great holiday destination at all times of year, being well placed to explore both coast and countryside. In the summer we offer our guests shared use of the farmhouse's heated outdoor swimming pool and tennis court. It sits beside an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has close proximity to the bird reserves of Titchwell and Cley. We welcome visitors to explore the farm and to observe nature on the doorstep. The cottage has central heating with radiators in each room. Behind the cottage we have a small farm shop selling Norfolk real ales brewed with malt made from the barley which can be seen growing on the farm.

About Sally Maufe

I am Sally Maufe and I moved to Norfolk from London in 1980 and met my husband who was farming here at Branthill Farm on the Holkham Estate, just outside Wells-next-the-Sea. We feel so privileged to live in such a beautiful part of the country. We have three grown up sons and a daughter who live away but come back often as they love it here!

Why Sally Maufe chose North Norfolk District

My husband was born on this farm and began farming when he was 22 years old and we have been together since the 1980s. As farming changed over the years and our family grew up and away we decided to offer Canary Cottage as self-catering accommodation for the growing numbers of people that have come to love this area on the north Norfolk coast.

What makes this cottage unique

Canary Cottage is special because it is situated on this working arable farm overlooking its fields and historic farm buildings. It is situated on the Holkham Estate and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty famous for both its beautiful coast and countryside which can be explored by car, bike or foot.

It is 2.5 miles from the bustling seaside town of Wells-next-the-Sea renowned for its sandy beach and characterful shopping streets.

Notes on accommodation: This is non-smoking accommodation and although we accept pets this is at the owner's discretion. Outside: Outside there is a garden table and two chairs with a sunshade set with a south facing aspect. There is a shared heated outdoor swimming pool 32 feet x 16 feet available from June to September and a shared all weather hard tennis court. There is ample parking and storage for bikes. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen is provided but bring your own towels. The cottage is cleaned and the linen changed once a week. Other: There is a good sized hallway for hanging coats and storing shoes etc.

Canary Cottage.

We recently had a week staying at Canary Cottage on the Branthill Farm estate. A lovely secluded location on a working farm with many different birds including a barn owl seen several times during the day. For me the lure of Steam Trains and Real Ale was sated by trips to 2 of the 4 "local" steam railways and a plethora of bottled and draught real ales being available not only from the Real Ale shop located on the farm and from Malt Coast Brewery (also located on the farm estate) but in the surrounding area. The cottage was well appointed with all mod cons and was just right for my wife and I. We will be back.

Canary Cottage is 2.5 miles from the town of Wells-next-the-Sea and 3 miles from the town's beach. As well as driving it is possible to walk or cycle to the town/beach.

Wells beach is a beautiful sandy stretch backed by pine woods and charming beach huts. Once on the beach it is possible to walk through the woods or along the beach to Holkham beach the scene of many film sets.


As we are in a rural situation, a car is recommended.


We are 2.5 miles from Wells-next-the-Sea, 2 miles from Holkham Hall (on foot) and 4 miles by car. The cottage is 6 miles from Burnham Market with its pretty village green, shops, cafes and restaurants. The market town of Holt is approximately 17 miles away having a large variety of shops, art galleries and cafes and a train link to Sheringham. The county capital of Norwich is 30 miles from here and Kings Lynn 25 miles, both with train links to London.

In the town of Wells-next-the-Sea there is a Barclays Bank and a 'hole in the wall'. There are individual shops such as butcher, baker, fishmonger, mini market, delicatessen and gift and clothes shops. There is also a Cooperative Supermarket on the outskirts of town. There is a library, a post office and a doctor's surgery.

There are many types of eating places in the area and Wells has cafes, pubs, and fish and chips are sold on the Quay. There are also good pubs for eating in all the outlying villages.

Many people visit this area because of its wonderful coast where you can mingle with the crowds or find peace and tranquillity on sandy stretches, on the dunes, on the marshes or cliffs. The many charming villages nearby are also worth visiting and Burnham Thorpe, just 3 miles away, is Nelson's birthplace.

Seal trips are offered by Bean's and Temple's of Morston and there is a ferry from the Quay at Wells which takes you through some of the creeks and up to the Lifeboat House.

Churches and stately homes abound and Norfolk is the home to many saxon and Norman round towered churches. Holkham Hall is 4 miles by car and is the home of Lord Leicester while Houghton Hall is 14 miles away and home to Lord Cholomenley.

Booking Notes:
Bookings are taken by phone or email and the non refundable deposit (20% of cost of stay) are accepted by cheque or BACS. The balance is due 4 weeks before the stay also either by BACS or cheque.

Changeover Day:
Changeover day for week or two week long stays is Saturday. For shorter stays
(4 night minimum) the changeover day can be flexible. Arrival time is after 2pm and departure is 10pm.
