About the Owner

We are English owners who live in Kent with our five dogs. Three years ago we actually took a little Bajan dog back to England with us. We came to Barbados on holiday and loved it, after a few years of staying in hotels we decided to buy a property. We looked at several areas and various properties before deciding that Speightstown had everything we wanted. We saw a property that needed some TLC, purchased it and lovingly turned it into the beautiful villa it is now. We now boast numerous Bajan friends! We try to spend a weeks on the island each year as it is like home from home, our neighbours welcome us back with warm smiles and hugs!

Local Living in Sunny Barbados

  • 5 of 5

If you're looking for a house in a local street with a swimming pool, easy access to a supermarket, restaurants, public transport links and, crucially, a beach pretty much at the end of the road then this is the place for you.

The property is as described and the photos depict exactly what to expect. All of the advertised amenities were there and worked perfectly throughout the stay. Perhaps worth mentioning that there are actually UK plug sockets as well as the local two prong, so although we had them with us, there was no need to use adapters at all.

Contact with the owner was clear and helpful. The local contact was on hand to help, though in practice we never needed her after she let us in to the property. The cleaner did a great job every week.

The restaurants and bars in town are of a high standard and a mix of local and more tourist oriented. Personally we preferred the local bars and they were considerably cheaper. Fair to say though, that Speightstown isn't the cheapest holiday destination - as the locals themselves admitted. Speightstown is a friendly, though not hugely 'touristy' when we were there in July, place and we'll miss the constant chat with locals in the street itself and elsewhere. Indeed, by the end of three weeks, we were pretty much being treated as locals ourselves.

Particularly good are the bus links to the rest of the island. While the public transport trips themselves are an "experience", they are great value and very friendly and helpful. It's only about 30 mins on the bus to Bridgetown and you'll barely notice the time passing getting there. we did the whole holiday without a car and never felt that we needed it.

We would happily go back to the same property in future. Admittedly, some will prefer the all inclusive gated version of Barbados life rather than living more as a local, but I'm assuming if that's the case, then you won't be looking at this review.

Lovely spacious villa with a great pool and gazebo

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time. Villa was spacious, clean and very well equipped with a/c in bedrooms. Plenty of linens/towels available.

The pool was a must to cool off from the sun and provided us much fun, with a gazebo providing shade when required.

It is situated close to local shops, restaurants etc and a lovely beach near by. It is in a residential area with some similar properties aswell as very modest properties and don't expect a smooth tarmac road as there are few on the Island without potholes!

Speightstown and the beach were charming and locals very friendly. It's not as polished as other areas such as Holetown or of course Sandy Lane but we preferred it for that reason -it feels more authentic Bajan.

My only suggestion for improving the villa is to allow guests to pay optional extra for the airconditioning in the lounge. Whilst there's ceiling fans the a/c would make it more comfortable.

Overall a very good place that we'd return to.

Such a shame but a disappointing experience

  • 3 of 5

We stayed at this house as a last minute deal in January. The price was reasonable for the time of year and in all honesty the house was nice. We had an issue with the water not working when we first arrived but a plumber was called and the issue was resolved. My upset is down to the fact that a number of our clothes were ruined by the washing machine. There were 4 of us staying in the house and we were left 1 bath towel and 1 beach towel for the stay. When I asked the housekeeper if we could have more she said no that was what they give out and we would have to use the washing machine to clean the towels. No real issue there as I know it's not a hotel, so used the washing machine and it ruined our white clothes with an orangey/brown colour all over. Went to the shops and bought some stain remover and it didn't come out. Spoke to the housekeeper who apologised and said it had happened a little while previously as the water pipes in the area were being changed. When I got home I messaged the owner about the issue as the damage was way in to the hundreds for the ruined clothes. She apologised and said that she thought the issue was resolved and that she was actually waiting on compensation for damaged clothes herself. She said when it came through she would send me a cheque. I appreciate the gesture, however one thing didnt have anything to do with another - I rented the house from her, I was advised to use the washing machine which subsequently ruined our clothes (which I have pictures of) and instead of rectifying the matter and paying the compensation for the actual damage at that point - I felt like I was being fobbed off. We've been back over a month and still no sign of my clothes being replaced which is very disappointing considering we paid a deposit, left the place in a clean state and caused no issues whatsoever while we were there. I understand these things happen I really do, however it's all about the service that you give to someone based on what they pay and this I didn't receive. We were planning on coming back again and would have stayed in the same place but unfortunately that wont happen now, which is a shame. If you're going to stay here DO NOT use the washing machine

Owner's Response: Unfortunately circumstances beyond my control have been an issue. The Barbados Water Authority has been replacing water pipes throughout the island in the past year. I was only made aware of this by chance just recently. Wherever you stay on the island at present you will have the same issue, it is the water that has been causing the problem. An expensive luxury villa close by has had exactly the same issue with the water. I have applied for compensation in respect of this particular guest from the BWA and will pass it on as a gesture of goodwill. As anyone who knows Barbados, you will be well aware that the authorities work very slowly so a long wait may be ahead! One of the taps in one bathroom had a minor hiccup due to limescale build-up that was resolved straightway, the water was on and working fine throughout the villa. Guests are given 3 towels each which are changed weekly when the maid comes to clean. Guests are welcome to launder the towels in the washing machine if they so wish, laundry dries very quickly in Barbados. Clean towels have never been an issue. This is not Sandy Lane but a reasonably priced self-catering accommodation that is kept clean and is fully equipped. We take pride in our service which encompasses amongst other things - arranging transportation, baby-sitting, dinner reservations, general advice about the island etc. Our housekeeper is always on call for guests.

Fabulous!

  • 5 of 5

Poppy Villa is spacious, spotlessly clean and well equipped with all mod cons for a self catering stay. Friendly communications with the owner before departure made arrival effortless. Helen the caretaker and Annette the cleaner made us feel right at home and could not have been more helpful. The pool and outdoor dining area is a real boon. As two women holidaying together with two children, we felt very safe in this friendly local neighbourhood. There was plenty of room for us all. Speightstown is a proper community and a lovely town. Just a short walk away is a beach where turtles come every morning. The local scuba dive operation, Reefers and Wreckers, is excellent and only 5 mins walk, as is the supermarket, ATM and a selection of eateries. We would return to Poppy Villa in a heartbeat and will recommend it to all our friends. The only problem was persuading the kids to leave!

Home from home

  • 4 of 5

We have just come back from a lovely stay at Poppy Villa and thoroughly enjoyed our time in Speightstown. Poppy Villa really has everything you need, its well equipped and comfortable, a real home from home. We didn't have a car but that wasn't an issue, the buses ran frequently at the top of the road and having a phone available to call a taxi or make a dinner reservation was extremely useful, as was having wi-fi. If you are staying in Speightstown for the first time its important that you know that it is a small town with pot holed roads, uneven pavements and delightful old fashioned stores. Its not a polished tourist spot but a charming town with an excellent beach and some lovely restaurants. Should you wish to travel to Mullins beach or Holetown its only a short bus ride away. Poppy Villa is good value for money, I would most definitely return.

Location

From the Owner

The villa is in a prime location on the beautiful west coast, just minutes from beaches, shops, banks, bars etc. You don't even need a car, a bus stop is just across the road, buses run every few minutes to take you almost anywhere on the island. We love this end of the island as the beaches are not crowded and the locals are always so friendly. Either lunchtime or evening, it is nice to take a short stroll to one of the many eateries close by to enjoy Bajan cuisine with no washing up! Sit at a beachside bar and enjoy a nice cold Banks. Within walking distance of safe beaches, if you want to venture further a short bus ride takes you to other beaches along the coast.
