About Trish Dabnor

We are English owners who live in Kent with our five dogs. Three years ago we actually took a little Bajan dog back to England with us. We came to Barbados on holiday and loved it, after a few years of staying in hotels we decided to buy a property. We looked at several areas and various properties before deciding that Speightstown had everything we wanted. We saw a property that needed some TLC, purchased it and lovingly turned it into the beautiful villa it is now. We now boast numerous Bajan friends! We try to spend a weeks on the island each year as it is like home from home, our neighbours welcome us back with warm smiles and hugs!

Trish Dabnor purchased this villa in 2007

Why Trish Dabnor chose St. Peter

The villa is in a prime location on the beautiful west coast, just minutes from beaches, shops, banks, bars etc. You don't even need a car, a bus stop is just across the road, buses run every few minutes to take you almost anywhere on the island. We love this end of the island as the beaches are not crowded and the locals are always so friendly.

Either lunchtime or evening, it is nice to take a short stroll to one of the many eateries close by to enjoy Bajan cuisine with no washing up! Sit at a beachside bar and enjoy a nice cold Banks.

Within walking distance of safe beaches, if you want to venture further a short bus ride takes you to other beaches along the coast.

What makes this villa unique

If you want a quiet relaxing holiday you can have it; as the villa has it's own private pool and secluded garden. When the sun goes down you can barbecue outside under the covered gazebo, watch the fire flies or bats flying about overhead.

This property is ideally located for fish fry evenings at Moon Town, a must for every holiday maker.

You can get to the capital Bridgetown very easily by bus to soak up the sights. Bridgetown is vibrant and a must on your bucket list, from here you can take a trip on the famous Jolly Roger.

Beautiful house - a true home from home

  • 5 of 5

Poppy Villa is a comfortable , well equipped and spotlessly maintained house on the edge of Speightstown. It is well situated and provides easy access to beaches, shops, bars and restaurants and the bus to explore further afield. The garden is private and perfect for outside dining and the pool was a real bonus. The booking procedure and communication with owner Trish was easy and Helen ensured everything ran smoothly during our stay. I cannot think of anything that could be improved and hope to visit again soon.

Lovely secluded place in authentic neighbourhood

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Poppy Villa for 11 days in January and had a lovely time. The pool and secluded garden are a real bonus, and the house was extremely well equipped with air con in all the rooms. To be honest, we quite like to just use overhead fans as we come for the heat after all but it is a treat to have it in the bedroom. We didn't use the washing machine (see a previous review), preferring to do quick handwashes on holiday but the maid did and the bathmats looked fine and not orange!

The house is in a "proper" Caribbean neighbourhood so probably not for people looking for the more manicured, upmarket feel of the Sandy Lane kind. Which is of course reflected in the very reasonable price. We found the neighbours very friendly and Speightstown a perfect place to come for your holiday. There is a gorgeous beach literally at the bottom of the road and a lovely town beach with lots of restaurants and bars that offer free loungers. Two supermarkets too but I would recommend doing your big shop in one of the really large Masseys or suchlike further South - especially if you are planning to cook most of your meals as the selection in Jordans or the fish market is a bit limited. Lots of nice fruit and veg stalls though.

We particularly appreciated the large covered seating area in the garden as we had almost daily trpoical downpours but were still able to "live" outdoors. All in all this rental comes highly recommended!

Poppy Villa is amazing.

  • 5 of 5

Poppy Villa is absolutely amazing. The pictures do not do the house and pool justice. Everything was beyond my expectations. All amenities are top notch. The privacy of your own personal pool is such a luxury. While Speightstown is not very touristy and some of the restaurants were not open for supper the first week we were there we had no problem shopping and cooking for ourselves (we actually prefer it). Pizza Man Doc's serves up a pretty good pizza. Everything was within walking distance and when we wanted to venture further we always use the bus services. The neighborhood is fine and we actually got to know some of the people in the neighborhood. I can definitely see us returning to this location. Thanks so much for sharing your amazing house with us.

Local Living in Sunny Barbados

  • 5 of 5

If you're looking for a house in a local street with a swimming pool, easy access to a supermarket, restaurants, public transport links and, crucially, a beach pretty much at the end of the road then this is the place for you.

The property is as described and the photos depict exactly what to expect. All of the advertised amenities were there and worked perfectly throughout the stay. Perhaps worth mentioning that there are actually UK plug sockets as well as the local two prong, so although we had them with us, there was no need to use adapters at all.

Contact with the owner was clear and helpful. The local contact was on hand to help, though in practice we never needed her after she let us in to the property. The cleaner did a great job every week.

The restaurants and bars in town are of a high standard and a mix of local and more tourist oriented. Personally we preferred the local bars and they were considerably cheaper. Fair to say though, that Speightstown isn't the cheapest holiday destination - as the locals themselves admitted. Speightstown is a friendly, though not hugely 'touristy' when we were there in July, place and we'll miss the constant chat with locals in the street itself and elsewhere. Indeed, by the end of three weeks, we were pretty much being treated as locals ourselves.

Particularly good are the bus links to the rest of the island. While the public transport trips themselves are an "experience", they are great value and very friendly and helpful. It's only about 30 mins on the bus to Bridgetown and you'll barely notice the time passing getting there. we did the whole holiday without a car and never felt that we needed it.

We would happily go back to the same property in future. Admittedly, some will prefer the all inclusive gated version of Barbados life rather than living more as a local, but I'm assuming if that's the case, then you won't be looking at this review.

Lovely spacious villa with a great pool and gazebo

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time. Villa was spacious, clean and very well equipped with a/c in bedrooms. Plenty of linens/towels available.

The pool was a must to cool off from the sun and provided us much fun, with a gazebo providing shade when required.

It is situated close to local shops, restaurants etc and a lovely beach near by. It is in a residential area with some similar properties aswell as very modest properties and don't expect a smooth tarmac road as there are few on the Island without potholes!

Speightstown and the beach were charming and locals very friendly. It's not as polished as other areas such as Holetown or of course Sandy Lane but we preferred it for that reason -it feels more authentic Bajan.

My only suggestion for improving the villa is to allow guests to pay optional extra for the airconditioning in the lounge. Whilst there's ceiling fans the a/c would make it more comfortable.

Overall a very good place that we'd return to.
