The impressive staircase, original open fires and servant's bells add to the country house ambience.There are splendid sunsets looking across the Solway to Scotland to the north and views of Skiddaw and the Northern Fells to the south. Standing adjacent to a smaller holiday cottage, it is a perfect holiday home for families and friends relaxing together. Located in northwest Cumbria, it is ideally suited for exploring the Solway coast, the Northern Lakes and the popular lakeside town of Keswick, Hadrian's Wall in the Northumbrian National Park and the historic city of Carlisle. There are many outdoor and sporting opportunities. Enjoy the seasonal changes in nature whilst bird watching, walking, golfing or cycling. Visit the numerous castles and historical sites. 'We went to the house as a family group. The house was comfortable and homely with enough space for everyone. The kids loved the big garden, the nearby farm with cows and the swimming pool.The kitchen was awesome as there was room for everyone to eat together. Everyone agreed it was an ideal venue for our family and we hope to go again. August 13

'Cowan's Butt Barn is a lovely building and very comfortable. The adjacent pool was clean and a great bonus. The location is perfect if you want peace and quiet-very rural and tranquil.'

Just what we needed

We have just got back from Moor row house today and I wish I was back already. I hired this place for my sister's surprise 40th birthday celebrations and it was perfect for what we were looking for. There was 12 people altogether and we all loved it, yeah ok, it's an old property but it has so many original features and is a bit rustic but there is plenty of room, beautiful big kitchen with everything you need and plenty of seating space. Gardens were perfect as we hired a hot tub and had plenty of outside space to play games. Outdoor pool was a great bonus too as was the large games room. We will definitely be returning with the rest of our family as it's perfect for large get togethers. If your looking for a great place to get together and like older properties then this place is excellent value for money.

A great house to stay in with some faults

Every year I am tasked to find a large character house for our group. This year we came to Wigton to Moor Row House. Yes it is a big ragged at the edges, yes it could be a bit cleaner, but for size and facilities it could not be faulted. Great garden, snooker room, bathrooms (5), bedrooms (8) and easy access to the area. We never ran out of hot water and the two faults that developed were quickly dealt with. I tire of bad reviews of old properties, they are old and they have faults. We now accept a bit of dust as big houses are difficult to clean between changeover. If you love quircky and want a big house for a large party in this area it would be hard to find better. Thanks to Ian and his wife

One to avoid

It’s cheap, but you get what you pay for. Moore row house is huge, but in a poor state of repair. There is damp in many of the rooms, it's all tired and a bit dated, the plaster is peeling off the walls, the wall paper is peeling off. It’s an old house and these things happen, but the owner isn't particularly forthcoming in fixing them. Whilst we were there the cooker, dishwasher and kitchen taps were all broken and I would suspect still are broken all of these things were broken when we got there. There were lots of other issues with broken doors, showers etc but these were fairly minor by comparison. We reported some of the issues on the first day and was told he would try and come round and fix it. Eventually on the last day we were given a pair of pliers on so we could use the kitchen taps!

There is a pool, but it is shared with another property and is freezing cold (but then it was May).

Owner's Response: This customer broke the taps while he was at the house. The taps were replaced following their weekend visit. The dishwasher has been replaced. The cooker is an Aga it is regularly serviced and was working, these customers were using it when I attended the property. No doors are broken, all showers are working perfectly. We mend/replace all faults as quickly as possible, There is no damp. There were a couple of areas that had small stains but these have been repaired. The pool on the weekend of there visit was 24 degrees. The photography shows discoloured paint work it is not damp, it has been redecorated. Moor Row House is fantastic value for money and we have numerous customers booking for a second and third time after being open for just three years. I warmly welcome honest and respectful customers.

The Georgian market town of Wigton is three miles away as well as supermarkets, cafes and banks there are a range of interesting independent shops. A market is held is held on Tuesday and Friday. The Lake District National Park is only 20 minutes away and can be reached in half an hour. Closer at hand are the unspoiled beaches of the Solway Firth. Previous visitors have enjoyed trips further afield to Hadrian's Wall to Edinburgh and Glasgow both just over an hour from Carlisle by train. One of the great railway journeys of the world can be taken from Carlisle to Settle a memorable day out crossing the Ribblehead Viaduct. The mosses around Kirkbride 3-4 miles north of the property is home to a varied and interesting amount of wildlife. Wigton is the home of Melvin Bragg and the setting for his novel 'A Soldiers Return.'

  • Notes on accommodation: There is a pond and well in the garden. The swimming pool is fenced but unlocked when in use. Pool open 15 May until 15 September. Outside: 2 acre garden with large assortment of plants and trees but mostly laid to lawn. There is a barbecue for each property. Outdoor furniture for both properties as well as a plentiful supply of poolside furniture. The pool is shared and heated (12ft X 16ft, depth range 4ft to 5ft open May 15th until September 15th)
