Beautifully Appointed Country Cottage Between Bath and Bristol

Overview

Property

Updated: 08-Dec-2016
2 Bedroom Cottage in rural location, Bitton, near Bath, Somerset, England

Boyd Cottage is a lovingly converted barn on a working farm, one of three neighbouring cottages tucked in the Golden Valley outside the village of Bitton. It has two bedrooms that can be either configured as a double and two singles, or alternatively as two doubles. One has an ensuite shower and wc, and the second has an adjacent bathroom. Upstairs is open plan, with a living area one end and a kitchen/diner the other. There is a private walled patio at the back and a paved front garden with teak chairs, table and recliners, plus a play area with swings, a climbing frame and slide and a trampoline. There is also a walk to the River Boyd where there is a picnic table by the Mill Pond.

Popular with cyclists, riders and walkers, the valley has many footpaths as well as being close to the Bristol & Bath Railway Path. The historic cities of Bath and Bristol are both 15 minutes drive away and many further attractions are within reach. Tracey Park Golf Club is two miles away. The property is 100 metres from the owners' house, and there is often plenty going on to entertain visitors.

About the Owner

We are a busy and successful writer (Bel) and photographer (Robin - semi-retired!) who find Boyd Farm the perfect place to live and work. We love the peace of our ten acres, only six miles from all the amenities of Bath and Bristol. Very special is the little community we have created on the homestead - with Dan (son) and his wife Aimee running the Splitscreen Ice Cream Company from their cottage, while in the adjoining cottage live close friends. Between them they have two children and a baby on site - which means a huge climbing frame, swings etc for visiting children to use too. Sometimes the cluster of 300 year old buildings which makes up our property is utterly silent, sometimes bustling, but always friendly and interesting. We make you very welcome and are always on hand to help.

Lovely stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week in November. The cottage/barn conversion is just like it looks in the pictures & it was spotless. The fire was laid for us, it's spacious & cosy with really comfortable beds. Robin was on hand to meet us & regularly checked we had everything we needed. It's a perfect place for a country get-away, we did some lovely walks, ate & drank well (Manor Farm shop up the road sold lovely bread, butter & bacon) and spent the evenings quietly around a real fire. The countryside would be stunning in late spring. We'd definitely recommend it.

Unique little gem in an unusual setting.

  • 5 of 5

We wanted a place to stay whilst visiting relatives and had no need of cooking etc., but this cottage is well equipped for all such needs.

The furnishing is a mix of retro & modern that seems to work, and there is an abundance of lighting effects available to suit any mood. There's a wood-burner that we didn't use, but found the other heating units a bit of a mystery on one cool evening. The ability to 'lay out' on the large settee and chair was most welcome after a hard day visiting. Beds a little too soft for us, but others may call that luxury. Lol.

We appreciated the two walled/fenced areas outside which allowed our little Jack Russell to safely 'water' the plants before bedtime. These areas were also well furnished with steamer chairs/tables etc.

We found the owners to be very friendly and helpful. We also enjoyed seeing their dogs and chickens wandering about in what feels like a little commune. The whole setting was relaxing and quiet during our stay and really gave that feeling of 'getting away from it all'.

I should think we will come again.

Superb!

  • 5 of 5

A delightful little hamlet and fairy tale cottage which was a dream to visit. Very accommodating and friendly owners/neighbours who made us feel very welcome. Definitely came home with "lifestyle envy"! All needs were catered for and the little courtyard spaces were ideal for a dog. Hopefully will be able to visit again in the Summer months.

Excellent High Quality Accomodation

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we arrived Robin was a perfect host.

The property was furnished with beautiful taste and to a high standard.

The little extras like shower gel and soap as well as essentials like tea and coffee were well received. We were catching up with family for Christmas and Robin ensured we had everything we needed during our stay nothing was too much trouble. Robin even provided and decorated a Christmas tree, Robin really went above and beyond our expectations.

Thank you for a memorable visit we will look forward to returning.

Fab cottage in lovely location

  • 5 of 5

We have just had a lovely stay here for two nights in December. The cottage was one of the nicest ones we've stayed in, finished to a very high quality. Great open plan living area upstairs with log burner and generally a very well thought out layout. Lovely cottage for a family, we brought our two and a half year old. She enjoyed the play area just outside too. Would definitely recommend to others and wish we had stayed longer!

The log fire was wonderful and well used!! It's in a great location and feels like a little hamlet. can't wait to come and stay again. Thank you to robin who was always checking we were ok and that everything was perfect.

Location

From the Owner

We moved out of the centre of Bath because we wanted no traffic noise and to experience the perfect peace of this rural backwater. But because we love the arts we like the fact that we can be in the centre of Bath in 15-20 minutes, to go to the theatre, the art galleries and museums, the Bath Thermae Spa, and so on. Bristol is easily reached, but just a little further away. All in all we chose a perfect spot for enjoyment of the countryside AND sophisticated city life. From here it's easy to drive to places like Wells and Cheddar Gorge (and so many other places too) then come back at night to light the woodburner and be cosy. After all, who doesn't want the best of ALL worlds?

Facilities

From the Owner

We enjoy looking for wildlife and take great delight in the knowledge that otters, owls, kingfishers, badgers, deer, rabbits, trout, crayfish, herons, ducks and of course the foxes (our chickens safe in a run!) are all co-existing with us. Guests who sit for long enough in the special picnic spot by the river may be rewarded with sightings too. This is a magical spot.
