About the property

2 Bedroom Cottage in rural location, Bitton, near Bath, Somerset, England

Boyd Cottage is a lovingly converted barn on a working farm, one of three neighbouring cottages tucked in the Golden Valley outside the village of Bitton. It has two bedrooms that can be either configured as a double and two singles, or alternatively as two doubles. One has an ensuite shower and wc, and the second has an adjacent bathroom. Upstairs is open plan, with a living area one end and a kitchen/diner the other. There is a private walled patio at the back and a paved front garden with teak chairs, table and recliners, plus a play area with swings, a climbing frame and slide and a trampoline. There is also a walk to the River Boyd where there is a picnic table by the Mill Pond.

Popular with cyclists, riders and walkers, the valley has many footpaths as well as being close to the Bristol & Bath Railway Path. The historic cities of Bath and Bristol are both 15 minutes drive away and many further attractions are within reach. Tracey Park Golf Club is two miles away. The property is 100 metres from the owners' house, and there is often plenty going on to entertain visitors.

About Robin Allison-Smith

We are a busy and successful writer (Bel) and photographer (Robin - semi-retired!) who find Boyd Farm the perfect place to live and work. We love the peace of our ten acres, only six miles from all the amenities of Bath and Bristol. Very special is the little community we have created on the homestead - with Dan (son) and his wife Aimee running the Splitscreen Ice Cream Company from their cottage, while in the adjoining cottage live close friends. Between them they have two children and a baby on site - which means a huge climbing frame, swings etc for visiting children to use too. Sometimes the cluster of 300 year old buildings which makes up our property is utterly silent, sometimes bustling, but always friendly and interesting. We make you very welcome and are always on hand to help.

Why Robin Allison-Smith chose Somerset

We moved out of the centre of Bath because we wanted no traffic noise and to experience the perfect peace of this rural backwater. But because we love the arts we like the fact that we can be in the centre of Bath in 15-20 minutes, to go to the theatre, the art galleries and museums, the Bath Thermae Spa, and so on. Bristol is easily reached, but just a little further away. All in all we chose a perfect spot for enjoyment of the countryside AND sophisticated city life. From here it's easy to drive to places like Wells and Cheddar Gorge (and so many other places too) then come back at night to light the woodburner and be cosy. After all, who doesn't want the best of ALL worlds?

What makes this cottage unique

We enjoy looking for wildlife and take great delight in the knowledge that otters, owls, kingfishers, badgers, deer, rabbits, trout, crayfish, herons, ducks and of course the foxes (our chickens safe in a run!) are all co-existing with us. Guests who sit for long enough in the special picnic spot by the river may be rewarded with sightings too. This is a magical spot.

Very comfortable cottage with welcoming and friendly owners.

Beautifully decorated cottage in the most lovely setting. Very dog friendly which was a must for us. Lovely walks in the surrounding fields and lanes but only a few miles from the centre of Bath. Great little farm shop a mile away. Robin and his family were extremely helpful and welcoming. Very comfortable cottage with everything you would need. A definite 5 * rating from us!

Magical Cottage in a beautiful setting.

  • 5 of 5

Everything about this destination was beautiful. Winding down the narrow country roads to finally reach this gem of a cottage took all the stresses of life away and allowed the body to relax into its charm. My husband and I and our two teenage daughters recently spent three nights here and it wasn't nearly long enough. It is closely located to Bath and Bristol and also about an hour away from Stonehenge, if planning a day trip. While there is plenty to do in the area, the cottage itself, and surrounding paths to walk on provided relaxing activities. The cottage is beautifully furnished with everything needed to cook, relax, read, or entertain oneself. The owners, Robin and Bel were extremely welcoming and helpful and pleasant to talk with. There is a full history of the farm inside the cottage which was fascinating to read about and Robin and Bel's love for their property and it's history is evident when looking around the property and in speaking with them. We look forward to returning here for a longer stay. What a special place and a wonderful experience!!

Fabulous Country Retreat

  • 5 of 5

This lovely cottage felt like a home away from home. Everything you possibly need was supplied by the owner. Robin was very hospitable and friendly. Boyd Farm is peaceful and exciting at the same time. We wish we could have stayed longer.

Exceptional with one minor reservation

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful property with everything you might want for a long stay near Bath & Bristol without the traffic and parking issues. A car is a must but don't bring a wide one. Everything out there is "narrow-track".

The location is far more than expected on an historic property with great outdoor amenities. Get a tour or at least some of the history from the owners. The hosts are very accommodating and the dogs are friendly once they sniff you.

The upstairs living area is more than ample for hanging out and relaxing and unlike some apartments, there is sufficient seating and entertainment options. Quite comfortable. The windows at each end allow a slight breeze to cool when days are hot. Outside sitting areas add options even when cool.. The kitchen has about everything needed for cooking which we did - two couples with appetites.

The bedrooms were adequate for what you do there. For large folks, maybe a little snug in BR#2. If there is any downside it is that the bath adjacent to the #2 bedroom has only a handheld shower (no wall attachment) and no shower barrier. Result: wet floors if you are very creative in showering or unable to scrunch into the tub for a sit-down. OK for kids, but elderly beware! For Americans (like us), this can be a challenge, but also for Americans, the experience of this kind of a getaway does outweigh the minor adjustment. I would recommend this one upgrade in the #2 bath. The #1 BR with en suite bath is for the adults.

A strong 4 3/4 stars from us.

Owner's Response: Hi John, I'm glad you had a great stay, but I appreciate your criticism of the second bathroom - Bel had suggested it to me at the start of the year, so now I'll have to listen to you both! I'll be fitting that shower screen and rail as soon as I can, and I hope we see you again for a longer stay - way too much to see and do for the time you were here! Best wishes, Robin

Close to so much but far from ordinary

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this property over the Easter weekend with our daughter and small dog. Having looked at many properties beforehand we kept returning to this one and are so glad we did. The cottage is perfectly situated to enjoy all that Bath and Bristol has to offer but with the benefit of being able to return in the evening to relax in peaceful, gorgeous surroundings and enjoy a great night's sleep. The cottage is quirky and very comfortable with good quality towels and bedding and the kitchen was very well equipped with all that we needed. This was the first break we have taken with our dog who enjoyed meeting the friendly resident dogs and walking the nearby fields and lanes! The Old Crown at Kelston allows dogs in the bar area where we ate one evening and we also had lunch at Chapel Arts Cafe in Bath which was very dog friendly. We really enjoyed experiencing 'upside down' living for a few days and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this lovely property.
