Secluded and picturesque

  • 4 of 5

Stayed at Hare Cottage for six days in Aug 2016. A charming little cottage of the period so I knew what to expect inside. The facilities were fine for my needs (a cycling tour of the area and to the coast). The TV worked fine, as did the kitchen appliances. The beds are very comfy. The step that separates the kitchen from the dining area/sitting room catches you out but I solved this by placing a book I had up against it or a magazine to remind you it is there. No problems. Very quiet and secluded spot. The mist drifting over the fields viewed from the front bedroom window at dawn one morning was a particular delight.

The settee is not something you want to sit on for too long if you are intent on watching TV or staying inside all day.

A word to cyclists in particular, the road up from Sherborne is quite a hill and the cars and lorries can be unforgiving as you make you way up towards Alweston. The roads in general in this area are quite busy and there are not many narrow country lanes that avoid traffic. I ventured towards Yetminster and Thornford for much less busy routes south.

All in all a very pleasant stay.

Lovely location but the cottage is in need of updating.

  • 2 of 5

I booked this cottage for 12 days in July, I was moving house but the house wasn't quite ready so we bridged the gap by booking here.

When I first walked in I was a little shocked at the damp musty smell and the numerous dead bugs all around!

After throughly cleaning right through i moved my stuff in and it served the purpose I needed it to.

I have to say myself and my children kept our shoes on for the entire lenght of our stay due to the carpet being very old and the carpet in the bathroom being very stained around the toilet.

All in all the cottage did what we needed but it's in desperate need of an update, the sofa was very old fashioned and a new carpet is needed throughout.

I loved the location it was very peaceful and quite but do feel I payed a lot of money to stay in not a very nice cottage.

Small delightful cottage with a breathtaking view.

  • 3 of 5

This cute cottage appears recently decorated and was clean. On arrival (in the dark) we struggled to find the key holder as this was hidden by foliage on the wall (there is no sensor light on the building exterior or village street lamps - Alweston is a very dark village at night- torches recommended). The small step into the kitchen presents a major danger as the carpet is loose and we all tripped on it several times. The bedrooms were pretty and cosy with comfortable beds and good quality bedding. The living room furniture was uncomfortable and needs more than a few old throws to make it presentable. The heating instructions were inadequate and we spent the first 24 hours in the cold until we had worked it all out and bought logs and kindling to stoke up the beautiful wood burner. We fell in love with nearby Sherbourne and will definitely visit the area again. The Abbey is well worth a visit, the shops are lovely to browse and Olivers for afternoon tea is a must.

From the Owner

This is our family country cottage. We hope that others will like it and enjoy it too. Hare cottage is in a quiet lane with views over open farmland. It's quiet and there isn't WiFi so a good place to unwind. If you like unspoilt countryside then North Dorset is lovely. Bulbarrow Hill (highest in Dorset) has stunning views, and Milton Abbas which is close by was built by the Lord of the Manor after he destroyed the old village because it spoilt his view. The Fox at Ansty is also worth a visit.

From the Owner

Sherborne is nearby and has Abbey and 2 castles. Sir Walter Raleigh lived in the newer one and this is where he used to sit outside and smoke his pipe! Don't miss the Lovely village pubs with good food. The Pub in Chetnole quite near Sherborne was very good last time I was there. Cerne Abbas is a nice village in a valley in a very beautiful area (be careful to use the main roads otherwise they are very steep). There is a rather rude gentleman cut into the chalk who it is said helps with infertility. Eateries in Sherborne come recommended, in particular "The Green" for a special dinner out. The "Three Wishes" with its hidden garden at the back is good for breakfast, coffee, lunch or tea. The award winning Sherborne Tourist Office can also help with ideas for places to visit.
