My parents have had a house in the village for a while and I have always enjoyed visiting. When I had the opportunity to buy a house, this was the place to choose. As soon as I walked through the door, this house felt like home. The house is a traditional, four square limestone cottage with an added large conservatory. The house has been renovated to preserve many of its original features. Most of the rooms feature wooden beams and limestone walls. The property is wonderfully secluded and safe, being surrounded by limestone walls and hedges. The back gates lead onto a shared drive with the neighbours who are very friendly. The house gets the sun all day long and there are seating areas on both sides so that you can enjoy it. The pool is definitely one of my favourite features, with a seating area for adults and a shallow beach area where children can paddle. There is a pool alarm. The village is in a lovely peaceful setting at the end of a lane. It is surrounded by vineyards and sunflower fields. The whole area is dedicated to Cognac and wine making and the delicious local drink called Pineau. The village is a five minute drive from Jarnac where all the local amenities are situated. The house is approximately 4 minutes away from Golf de Cognac and half an hour from the major course at Angouleme. Wi-Fi is available but there is not a telephone in the house.

About the Owner

We both work in the health service in busy, demanding

jobs. We live in a fairly rural area with our two dogs, Daisy and Henry. We have never taken them to France but aim to do so in the near future.

We have two grown up children and as a family we holidayed in France most years when they were small. Both our Son and Daughter enjoy coming to visit in France and feel that the house is very much a home from home.

We spend as much time as we can there and although have no plans to move to France on a permanent basis we would like to spend longer periods of time there. As life can be so hectic the one thing the house does is put everything back into perspective. Whether you like a busy time visiting jazz festivals or watching the red squirrels in the garden there is something for you

We had a lovely holiday in Cognac despite some initial hiccups ( hot water & WiFi had gone off) The pool was lovely with local wildlife, even a Hoopoe, bees and a hedgehog coming to join us on occasion. Mayo Family

Lovely holiday in Julienne

We had a lovely holiday in the house. The website photos do not do it justice and the property was much larger than we expected. The owner has made sure that all your needs are taken care of. The property is very well appointed with fantastic facilities. The lounge and kitchen area are great for relaxing, but it was the pool and BBQ area that scored the highest with our two teenagers. It is a great property for finding lots of space to be on your own or together. The area is beautiful and we enjoyed how close Cognac was. We would recommend sampling the local Pineau! We also had an amazing day in Bordeaux.

Lovely pool, house and location

The house was lovely especially the sitting room and kitchen. The pool was perfect for our 6 year old and us, with the different areas and heating! The BBQ area is in the best location to just turn round from the pool and have tea. The location is lovely with plenty of places to explore before you retreat back to the hidden oasis of the pool.

Stunning cottage close to Cognac

This is a gorgeous cottage set against a backdrop of picturesque vinyards and stunning countryside, in a small village in France.

We absolutely loved our stay here - from the pool with the accompanying barn (and bar!), to the unique kitchen with massive fireplace, and master bedroom with walk-in ensuite shower - fantastic! The property and garden is spacious enough for kids to play, or for adults to relax and unwind. The outside area/garden is absolutely lovely, and when we went, the tomato bushes were in full bloom so we picked them everyday for lunch. I gather that they've also had other edible things such as figs and strawberries blooming in the right seasons.

Sue our host and her son Nick were absolutely great with getting everything ready for us, and very efficient at sorting things. The house was spick and span just as we expected, and if we needed anything, it was easy to get hold of Peter, their man in the local area.

The area itself is breathtaking. It has the dazzling Charente River snaking through it - great to have a picnic by or stroll along. Jarnac, the local town a 5 minute drive away has the famous Chateau de Courvoisier, which offer tours and tasters - perfect, and the famous Restaurant du Chateau. Bourg Charente, which is an even closer drive than Jarnac, has the Michelin star restaurant Restaurant La Ribaudière if you're looking for something really special. The famous town of Cognac, (yes the drink is named after the region), is full of shopping, bars, and many other famous Chateaus that are worth a visit (Hennessy, Martell, Otard, Camus and Remy Martin to name a few). We visited Hennessy and Otard and had a couple of splendid days out.

Absolutely wonderful time -we will be back!

Coast/Beach:

Julienne is within easy driving distances of the Charente Maritime with its beautiful coastline and beaches. About 90 minutes away is la Rochelle with its attractive beaches and ancient harbour and town. Slightly further on is the wonderful seaside town of Royan with its many attractions and long, white sandy beach. For surfers the beaches of Lacanau are a must. The iles de Rey and Oleron are 2 hours drive. Inland beaches offering water sports are found at St Estephe, Angouleme and St Mathieu.

Travel:

The area is well served with airports which are easily accessible. Bordeaux from Gatwick, 1 hours flight and 75 minutes drive, La Rochelle and Limoges have frequent flights, the same drive time, many of them have holiday deals available. Rail link on Eurostar from London, TGV to Angouleme which is half an hour drive away, taxi's available. The drive down is around 8 hours from Calais down the AutoRoute and we can supply a good, straight forward route. A car is essential to explore the area.

Distances:

Julienne is midway between Jarnac and Cognac. Both have Cognac distilleries with tours also a July jazz festival in Cognac. Angouleme is an ancient walled, citadel town. Lots of restaurants, places of interest and the famous Bande Dessinee comic strip cartoon festival. The Circuit des Ramparts is also held in Angouleme in September, entrants from all over Europe. The Roman town of Saintes with its Amphitheatre also about an hours drive. St Simon and Chateauneuf are about 20 minutes away.

Further Details:

All of the local towns have the usual large supermarkets in abundance. There are many regional and local markets held on various days, we have a full list in the information folder in the house. The local bakeries are usually open first thing and then again late afternoon where everything is freshly baked.There are many local bars, bistro's and restaurants. As you would expect in such an area, as well as the Cognac distilleries there are some very good local wines and Pineau's available often from small, local vineyards. The local roads have many signs directing you to stop and try some of the regions favourite wines. All of the local towns have the major banks and post offices. The area is extremely diverse in what it has to offer, with its mild climate, time seems to stand still. Many of the small towns hold amazing secrets. In St Meme le Carriers which is 4km away there is water skiing and micro flights, in Bassac there is a 1000 year old Abbey which is a year round retreat. In Jonzac, 30 minutes away there is a large leisure complex and spa. Vibrac has an ancient Presbytery by the river with Kyaking, fishing and canoeing available, English spoken. The house and village are surrounded by vineyards, Sunflower fields in summer, woodlands, lanes safe to walk along and the pretty, local Limestone villages. There is a cool bag available in the house so you could pack a picnic and cycle in the area. There is a local company who hire cycles and all safety equipment, they will deliver and collect bikes at a very reasonable rate - go to www.cyclehiredirect.com and Natasha is very helpful. There are many cycle routes to suit all ages and abilities, Natasha can advise. Any season of the year you will find a calming, peaceful atmosphere, with opportunity to indulge in any exercise you fancy or none at all. After a busy day we also have a catering service available. The menu and contact details are in the information folder so give a ring and book your special meal at home.

We take 25% of the holiday cost as a non-refundable deposit so recommend holiday insurance. Changeover Day:
In high season change over day is Saturday. Access is from 5pm and departure is no later than 10 am on the day. Out of season we are more flexible and would aim to accommodate different days and times where possible

Notes on prices:
We are always happy to negotiate early booking terms and short term special offers. We will always give a discount for returning guests.

To secure the booking we have 25% of the total cost. The balance is due 60 days prior to holiday plus the security deposit of £250. I will email you to confirm receipt and also to let you know when your balance is due

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: The front door leads into the kitchen, the gate from the lane into the property is kept locked. The kitchen leads through to the dining area and one side off that is the lounge and the other is the conservatory. There is a passage way through, which goes to downstairs toilet and then leads to the drive and electronic gates. The stairs are a bit narrow and have a bend at the bottom which is well lit. Top of the stairs, to the right is one bedroom, shower room and toilet and then along from there is the second bedroom and the master room and en-suite. All bedrooms have large built in wardrobes and lots of shelving, mirrors and hairdryers are available. Most areas have recently been decorated and other areas I am looking to upgrade when possible. Outside: There is a pleasant, gated garden. The side of the house from the kitchen is a gravelled patio with table and chairs, there is a built in BBQ. Mature trees provide shade to this area.The side is lawned with a sturdy, wooden swing. The path from here goes through to back, gravelled drive and two large barns. It is possible to park in the front of the barns in the shade to keep cars cool. Follow this area round and you come to the swimming pool which has been formed to look like a beach area, it is heated with a small fountain and an infinity pool end. It is not a large pool but very pleasant to relax or let the children play safely. At the top end of the pool is the bar and games area where you can sit and monitor any children in the pool. The bar also has facilities for cooking. The conservatory also over looks the pool and bar area. The whole property has a good fence and there are electronic gates to the back of the garden. No part of the property or facilities are shared. Utility Room: Small, downstairs utility room which has an extra toilet. There is a new washing machine. Iron and ironing board available with washing hanger. There is also a line outside Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All bed linen supplied, protectors on mattress's and pillows. There is a bath towel and hand towel per guest. Some pool towels available but not to leave the house. The house is cleaned thoroughly at change over. Further cleaning available see T & C's. Other: There is a small dining area off the lounge, table and chairs and easily served from the kitchen. Also a large conservatory/games room. Again big comfortable sofa's and a good view of the pool, double doors lead outside to pool and garden.
