Top Lodge Cottage...

A calm, delightful and luxurious retreat in the heart of the Cotswolds, 10 minutes walk from the centre of historic Stow on the Wold. Built all on one level in the grounds of the owners' 19th century home, with fabulous uninterrupted views over miles of beautiful Cotswold countryside. The cottage sits alongside an ancient bridleway which forms part of the Monarch's Way walking trail. Built by local craftsmen in traditional materials the cottage is spacious, private and exceptionally comfortable with all modern amenities and its own south-facing garden. Guests are welcome to use the owners' heated pool and tennis court. A perfect sanctuary with easy walking access to one of England's most beautiful small towns, and an ideal base for exploration of the very heart of England.

About Biny Gregory

Tony (English) and Biny (Dutch) came to Stow in 1973 when Tony was a pilot in the RAF. We bought Top Lodge in 1978 and have taken root here. We feel very privileged to own an idyllic spot in this glorious part of the UK and much of our time is spent caring for Top Lodge and its surroundings. We're National Trust members, avid supporters of the Campaign to Protect Rural England, keen walkers and occasional culture-vultures in Stratford-on-Avon, Oxford and Cheltenham all of which are close by. Family comprises two daughters in their 30s and twin grandsons aged 5. We've family connections in Holland, Germany and France and spend time in Europe both summer and winter. We love where we live and very much want our guests to enjoy Top Lodge as much as we have in the past 36 years.

Beautiful, impeccable cottage

It's lovely, the owners are charming and their attention to detail is impressive. It is comfortable and warm, there is a lovely fireplace, and the windows look out on fields where we saw pheasants. Only a few minutes' walk from the town centre, but perfectly quiet. Very well equipped. We will be back! We loved: the very warm welcome (including a cake!), the perfect comfort of the beds and furniture, the immaculate cleanliness of the cottage and its proximity to other beautiful Cotswolds spots.

This was our second stay at this superb 'home from home'. If you are planning a few days in the Cotswolds look no further than TLC. Couldn’t ask for more

The cottage was wonderful. Loads of room with awesome vistas out the huge front window. We loved the location, within easy distance of all things cotswoldy. A short walk from the back door to a charming pub in the next town Broadwell. Biny and Tony were great hosts who responded to our every need and were very knowledgeable of the area.

Wonderful cottage!

Had a fabulous weekend at Top Lodge Cottage. The cottage is lovely and was well equipped with everything we needed and even some chocolate brownies! Perfect location to be able to walk into the village and very peaceful with lovely views. The owners came and introduced themselves and Biny gave us some ideas of what places to visit which was very helpful. We will definitely return for another weekend if not longer.

A totally relaxing stay in a very well equipped cottage with amazing views and friendly hosts. The underfloor heating and fireplace gave a lovely welcome. Tony and Biny are very approachable, and the surrounding area is beautiful. Would love to visit again.

Further Details:

The cottage lies just outside Stow on the Wold, the scene of the last battle of the English Civil War and at the heart of the Cotswolds. Stow has a rich collection of fine old pubs (including the oldest pub in England) along with restaurants, brasseries and coffee shops gathered round the ancient market square or tucked away in fascinating old buildings and alleyways.

Everyday shopping requirements are served by the Tesco supermarkets 5 minutes walk from the square and by more traditional shops in the town where there are excellent delicatessens, butchers and bakers and many lovely gift shops.

Several important National Trust properties are within easy reach. Snowshill, Hidcote, Upton and Chastleton and the Roman Villa at Chedworth. Nearby are Sudeley Castle (home of Henry VIII's last and surviving wife) and Blenheim Palace, Winston Churchill's birthplace and childhood home. Shakespeare's Stratford on Avon, with its Royal Shakespeare Theatre, is 25 minutes away by car. The dreaming spires of Oxford are 30 minutes by train from Stow's local station.

For children Adam Henson's Cotswold Farm Park is a 20-minute drive away as is the lovingly restored Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway at Toddington which offers a 13-mile ride through classic Cotswold country and (in season) a direct link to Cheltenham Racecourse.

The cottage lies within and extensive web of delightful and well documented Cotswold walks and is sited on a section of the Monarch's Way, the long and winding escape route of Charles II after his defeat at the battle of Worcester. Walkers' handbooks are among many books in the cottage.

Neighbouring villages close by include Chipping Norton, Burford, Northleach, Blockley, the famous Slaughters, the Swells, Bourton on the Water and Moreton in Marsh with its vibrant Tuesday market.

Fees No additional mandatory fees

1. SMOKING. Top Lodge Cottage is emphatically a NO SMOKING environment. We would much appreciate it if if you could please respect this in the interest of other guests renting the cottage after you.

2. CANCELLATION Any cancellation made by the client for any reason whatever shall be confirmed in writing (or by email with a request for acknowledgement) addressed to TLC. The following cancellation charges will apply:
(a) If cancelled more than 8 weeks before the start of the rental: loss of deposit.
(b) If cancelled less than 8 weeks before the start of the rental when full payment has been made TLC will attempt to re-let the property for the period of the booking. If TLC is successful in letting the property for the full period of the rental it shall refund to the Client the full amount paid less an administration fee of £30. If TLC is successful in re-letting only part of the booked period it shall refund an amount equal to the amount paid less, on a pro rata basis, the rental for the period which is not let and less an administration fee of £50. If TLC is unable to let the property at all for the cancelled period then all monies paid by the Client for the cancelled booking shall be forfeit to TLC.
3. CANCELLATION INSURANCE Cancellation insurance is not mandatory but TLC strongly recommends that Clients should take such cover to provide protection re the cost of cancellation penalties.

Owner's Cancellation Policy

  • 50% refund for cancellations more than 7 days before check-in date.
  • 100% refund for cancellations more than 14 days before check-in date.
  • Service Fee fully refunded on cancellations that qualify for 100% refund.
