About Sophie layard

Hello and thank you for looking at Butterlaw, our cottage situated in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) on the Somerset/Devon border.

Butterlaw sits within our 25 acre small-holding.

My husband, Andrew and I live on-site with two lovely children and share our home with (far too many!) animals including horses, dogs, cats, guinea pigs and three pet Kune Kune pigs! All are very friendly and in our company, visitors are welcome to fuss all the animals! Our pigs in particular, are always up for a tummy-tickle!

We are NOT a working farm, so life is pretty relaxed and low-key.

Our aim is to offer high quality accommodation, the chance to enjoy the tranquillity of the countryside and to be as flexible as possible with visitors' requirements.

Sophie

Why Sophie layard chose South Somerset

The Blackdown Hills offer space, peace and beautiful scenery. Our home is set in 25 acres of unspoilt countryside and is the perfect place for a young family to experience wonderful natural surroundings.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I think the title sums it all up! The house occupies a wonderful location with stunning rural views. It is beautifully equipped and extremely comfortable . The owners are very welcoming and make you feel instantly relaxed - nothing is too much trouble. (The dogs, pigs and ponies are also very friendly!) Sadly we were only there for a weekend but we enjoyed beautiful walks (without having to get into our cars). I would definitely recommend this property.

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: Stair gates available but please note there is currently no fire guard in-front of the wood burner. We are a strictly NO smoking property. Outside: Butterlaw has a private gated driveway and garden on two levels. It is mainly laid to lawn. The lower level is suitable for a small game of croquet (provided) and a step up to a patio with a large oak table, chairs and a gas Billy-Ho BBQ. A path leads up to a larger lawn, 2 sun-loungers and an all-weather table tennis table. 3 sides of the garden are fenced but the 4th boundary is a bank giving access to the farm (ie. not entirely dog proof and our dogs use the bank to come and visit guests and to scrounge some fuss!). There are no busy roads nearby. A small gate gives access to 25 acres, which can be explored. On the farm there is a trampoline, climbing frame with swing and slide and a junior see-saw. Some areas of the farm are steep and all areas are wild! Utility Room: Belfast sink, washing machine, electric drying rack, ironing board & iron, freezer. Cleaning equipment, torch, hair dryer, basic 1st aid box, shoe-cleaning box and small sewing kit. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: 100% Cotton luxurious bed linen and towels provided and 4 cotton waffle bathrobes for adults. Cotton hand towels and bath mats in cloakroom/bathrooms. Two week rentals can include a Friday 'mini clean' service and linen change if booked in advance. Other: Entrance porch with wrought iron boot rack and pewter coat hooks. Double height garden room with wonderful views, long window seat, reading chair, bistro table & chairs. Wide selection of DVDs, games and some books. French doors to garden/patio. Dog bed

Lovely property. Beautifull scenery.

  • 5 of 5

The house was lovely it had every thing you needed, just like being at home! The scenery was lovely. The only downside was the weather, we had rain every day and it was very windy. We still managed to go to different places eg West Somerset railway and to Wooky hole. We also loved the pet pigs and the friendly dogs that belonged to the owners of the property. It is right in the countryside and very quiet and miles from any shops! The owners were very nice and friendly.

Beautiful spacious barn conversion cottage in the middle of the countryside

  • 5 of 5

A lovely spacious property set in beautiful countryside overlooking a valley.

The cottage is s barn conversion so is extremely roomy and the lovely owner Sophie has gone out of her way to decorate it with quality furnishings, some of which are unique and quirky.

The patio area and garden are beautifully maintained and spacious enough for our large group of 7 adults not to be tripping over one another.

The peace and quiet here is wonderful, whilst having charming beaches only 30 minutes drive away.

We will be returning for many years to come.

Wonderful 2nd Stay

  • 5 of 5

Back to Butterlaw Cottage for our 2nd stay. Andrew and Sophie warm and welcoming like an old family member. The cottage as always is beautifully furnished and well equipped with views to die for. The hamper was great, a nice little treat on arrival after a tedious drive. Fully recommend anybody to visit, the problem is you will not want to leave.........

Lovely place to get away from it all

  • 5 of 5

Me and my family spent a lovely time in Butterlaw cottage. Plenty of living space for 6 adults and 2 small children. It was about 30 mins from most places to visit. Nicely furnished and great for children lots of toys books films. The weather was not great so didn't make the most of the outdoor space but nice to have a log burner to feel all cosy. would love to visit again.

A break from the norm

  • 5 of 5

A long weekend away from the rat race was certainly required and we got it just right when we found this place.

We were quite greedy having the whole place just for 2 of us but that was the idea.

Even with 2 families this would still be perfect. Lots of room, tastefully decorated and lots of fresh open spaces for walks.

Being out of the way from everyone but still 20 mins from a large town and 30-40mins from the coast.

Missing our 3 piggy friends already. :)
