Well positioned on the eastern edge of beautiful Dartmoor, with unbelievable far reaching views of the countryside and sea beyond, this cottage has it all for the country lover. With the open moor at your backdoor there are hundreds of walks of all length and variety to enjoy, cycling, riding, climbing or just ambling in this lovely area soaking up the pure air and splendor of the surroundings. Those who want a quieter time can relax on our open balconies all day long, reading or sunbathing in peace and quiet with uninterrupted views of fields and gardens. Down a privately owned lane, but not isolated, the cottage which is within the grounds of the main house, has the convenience of a farm shop half a mile away with a good café, an excellent community village shop (with a license) five minutes drive away, and the little town of Bovey Tracey 3 miles away with Post Office, Doctors surgery, chemist, Veterinary surgery, Banks, bakers, butchers, grocers, launderette, hairdressers and all you need for everyday living. Within a half hours drive or so are the Cathedral city of Exeter and the great old naval port of Plymouth, each with a rich mix of ancient buildings, history and modern shops, superb cafes and restaurants. Plymouth has a very good theatre. Smaller towns nearby are Ashburton, Totnes, Chagford, and Widecombe in the moor, all charming in their own way, and each with excellent eating places, and unique shops. A few minutes walk through the wood down our lane lies the hamlet of Haytor with its renowned Rock Inn. Here you can enjoy a beer in the beautiful garden, a sandwich lunch or delicious dinner in the cosy ancient Inn. You need to book. It is charming all year round, and people come from miles to eat here. We think our cottage is just about the best place to stay with its lovely position, charm and accessibility.
Penny Hardick purchased this cottage in 2014
On arrival we were very impressed with the cottage. Penny the owner was very helpful and happy to spend time telling us which areas and restaurants etc to visit. The cottage is very well equipped throughout with a large well stocked kitchen, lounge dinner. Lovely large master bedroom upstairs and a further two bedrooms on lower level. Large wet room with shower done to a really good standard. This cottage has everything and is nicely located for touring the area with Haytor Rock within walking distance and local pub. This cottage is a must for anyone visiting the area and penny even had cold drinks waiting for us and local biscuits and fresh flowers throughout the cottage. Thanks for a wonderful stay, we look forward to visiting again. Craig, Graham & Daphne.
Spent a lovely, relaxing week at Schotts House Cottage with a couple of family members in August 2015. The cottage is perfectly located being a great base from which to explore Devon whilst being peaceful enough to just relax in the beautiful surroundings. There are moorland and country lane walks right on the doorstep and a balcony from which to enjoy a hearty breakfast, holiday drink or night time bat spotting. We had most meals in the cottage itself finding the kitchen well equipped and the living/dining room comfortable to enjoy a relaxing film, good book or board game. Penny, the owner, was very accommodating without being overly familiar and provided us with a lovely selection of local goodies on arrival along with beautiful flowers from her lovely garden.
Would love to visit again!
We really enjoyed our stay in this lovely cottage with a cosy livingroom/kitchen and wonderful master bedroom on the top floor, as well as a large balcony with magnificent views of the countryside and out to the sea.
The owner (who lives next door, but did not bother us at all) was very friendly and helpful and welcomed us with beautiful flowers, wine, cheese, etc. We particularly enjoyed the numerous opportunities for beautiful walks on the moor. The grown-ups hardly missed having wifi, but our teenage daughter did.
You know that all is going to be good when you are greeted by beautiful cut flowers from the garden (and a bottle of local white wine!). This typifies Penny's attention to detail and reflects her kindness and hospitality. The cottage was spotless and comfortable. Big plus-points for our family group (52-82) were the large well-equipped kitchen area, living and terrace all on one level - great for eating in and out, at the same time as taking in the lovely views (near and distant). The whole of Dartmoor on the doorstep, but also very well positioned for access to surrounding towns, countryside and south coast. Comfortable walking distance to the Rock Inn (very good food) and an easy drive to The Rugglestone Inn (Widecombe) - surely the archetypal country pub and well worth a visit too. Plenty of places to buy food quite locally when not eating out. Bovey Craft Centre also nearby and well worth a look. Parking immediately adjacent to the cottage very handy, particularly perhaps at the sad point of departure. Penny even engineered perfect weather for the entire week. So all in all a great place to stay, in a lovely location, with a kind and considerate host. I/we would very much like to return and so thoroughly recommend to others.
The cottage is newly refurbished and has all the comforts you could need. Penny was very helpful and bent over backwards to make our stay as comfortable as possible and to suggest places for us to visit. The views in Dartmoor are stunning. We especially enjoyed the walk to Haytor Rock. The seaside resorts of Torquay and Paignton are about 40 mins drive away. We would highly recommend this property to everyone.
