Nestled in the heart of the Kingdom of Fife, in the hamlet of Chance Inn, the award winning Bag End Cottage offers luxury self-catering holiday accommodation in the main part of a stylish, contemporary, timber-clad residence set in an idyllic rural setting.

Opened in 2009 and awarded a Visit Scotland 4 Star rating, Bag End comfortably sleeps up to six guests in an idyllic rural setting in North East Fife.

With landscaped gardens, children’s play area, climbing frames, outdoor dining patio, giant chess board, open country views, orchard, barbecue and private parking, there is room for everyone.

Ideally located in the heart of Fife, close to the Tay and Forth road bridges, St Andrews, Edinburgh, Perth, Dundee and the East Neuk. Less than ten minutes’ walk from the recently restored Hill of Tarvit Hickory Golf Course and within a short drive of Carnoustie, Kingsbarns and the Old Course in St Andrews.

Hello. We are a young family that built our own bespoke home a few years ago. We are very happy to now offer accommodation for holidaymakers from around the world. Only having one property, we aim and we hope we achieve a very high level of service to our guests.

We have been open since 2009 and now have over 85 x 5 Star Trip Advisor reviews.

We have won TripAdvisor’s "Top Vacation Rental in the StAndrews Area" three times 2011, 2012 and now 2013...

And we have had guests come back up to seven times in the last 4 years, so i assume we are doing something right!

Beautiful house - highly recommended

We are a family group of 6 adults and 2 children who thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Bag End for a long weekend in October. The house is beautifully laid out, very clean, well equipped and lovely and warm. Beautiful countryside and a wonderful outdoor play area for the children. We were made very welcome.... thank you for the wine and cake Mark! Highly recommended.

Fantastic accommodation

We stayed here for 3 nights as part of our wedding and it was fantastic. We stay only half an hour away but wanted just to get off our door step and it felt like we were a million miles away. Everything you could ask for and more. The cottage is stunningly beautiful and wished we could have stayed longer.

The owner was great and has thought about absolutely every need.

Would 100% recommend staying here and would love to stay again.

Excellent property with everything you need

We stayed here ( 4 adults and 2 one year olds) for a short break and it was just great. The cottage is modern and well laid out. The owners provide pretty much everything you could need and the friendly owners were always on hand to help if needed. They even put up stair gates which was great for inquisitive little ones. A built in BBQ is found out the back in the large patio area accessed from the kitchen. There is even a giant chess board outside. The patio was ideal for the little ones to crawl about on. There is also a large play area which older kids would love. I would highly recommend this place. I was worried about it being too secluded but we spent most days in nearby St Andrews which was easily accessible while the husbands made the most of the nearby golf courses! There is loads to do in the area to keep you busy but you'd be just as happy staying in the cottage too.

Very relaxing location / lovely cottage

Bag End cottage has a peaceful, rural location with St Andrews and many wonderful day trips along the coast and inland within Fife within easy driving distance. The cottage is clean, modern with interesting art and glass as a feature. We had an excellent stay with in total 4 adults and 2 young children. We found it very well equipped for adults and small children.

Very nice accommodation - recommended

We stayed at bag end for a long weekend, 4 of us in total. Mark was very helpful both with moving our original booking date and providing lots of info about the surrounding area on our arrival. Bag end is high quality accommodation with all the bit's n bobs you'd need already provided and was a really pleasant stay. I'd be happy to come back here and would recommend bag end to anyone thinking about booking it. The others in our group were also impressed with it. Thanks!

From the Owner

The location of Bag End is idyllic. It is in the heart of the beautiful Kingdom of Fife surrounded by rolling countryside, lovely towns and villages and has access to all that this historic and affluent area has to offer. We are quietly tucked away but we are within striking distance of all of fife and cities such as Edinburgh which is only and hour away by either car or train. I (Mark) am originally from beautiful "Bronte" country in Yorkshire but i have lived in Fife now for nearly 20 years and love it very much. My wife Joyce is a Scottish lass from Sterling and our daughter Ruby is Scottish through and through.

Many beaches have a blue flag locally at 9 Miles

Bag is located in the heart of Fife and is in a rural location so a car is necessary to get the best out of your visit to the beautiful Kingdom of Fife.

Further Details:

Just a short walk from Bag End is the Kingarroch Inn which has been totally rebuilt following a major fire in 2014. This offers very good restaurant food and uses much of the locally produced food that Fife is famous for.

In general, Fife abounds with exceptional food from, fruit, venison, wines, cheeses, beef, etc. Due to this we have a wide selection of very good eating places and restaurants to suit all budgets. There is a beautiful village 1 mile from Bag End with two very good pubs, a well stocked Spar, two cafes and a superb butcher. Cupar has two supermarkets and many of the usual high street shops.

St Andrews is a delight as it is full of bespoke individual shops offering a wide variety of high quality food and other goods. As it is the home of Golf, an ancient monastic city and home to the oldest university in Scotland, it is also a very welcoming and interesting place to visit and live.

Overall Fife has 100s of interesting places to visit due to its historic part in Scotland’s past, its position as one of the most popular tourist destinations in Scotland and its vibrant and mixed population which give it a genuinely interesting spark.

  • Notes on accommodation: Sound-proofed double-glazing throughout. Full central heating with underfloor heating on the ground floor, radiators on the upper floor, and independent heating controls in each room. Fitted carpets in bedrooms, stairs and upper hallway. Dimmable lighting in lounge, dining room and all bedrooms. Free Wi-Fi and Freeview televisions in all bedrooms. Outside: Bag End is set within its own grounds with landscaped gardens to front and rear. There is a large play area to play football, with climbing frame, swings slide etc. To the rear is a patio area with outdoor barbecue, eight-seater picnic table, giant outdoor chess board, and open views of the fife countryside where a variety of wildlife can be seen throughout the year. There is also ample private off-road parking next to the house. Other: Dining Room Lovely separate breakfast / dining room with seating for six guests.
