House in Ceret, Pyrenees Orientales, Languedoc-Roussillon, France - In The Heart Of Ceret With Easy Access To Restaurants, Art Gallery, Hillwalking And Public Transport

Imagine having breakfast on a rooftop terrace with panoramic views across the hills and villages of the Pyrenees-Orientales. "16bis" offers the opportunity to do just that. It is the perfect house for family holidays or for a group of friends to stay and explore the town on your doorstep. Ceret offers something for everyone, hike in the mountains in the mornings, take a refreshing dip in the Mediterranean in the afternoon and spend the evenings strolling the peaceful streets of the town. You will enjoy dining and sampling the local wine whilst listening to the street musicians play. The Saturday morning market is famous and brings specialist food purveyors from the entire region. That's why visitors asked me to change my changeover day ot Sunday, so they could enjoy the buzz of all day Saturday. Local artisans have another market on a weekday evening in the summer with jewelry, pottery, handcrafts, linen and specialist foods. "16bis" is in the heart of Ceret's Old Town so in 3 - 5 minutes from the house you can reach restaurants, pubs, coffee shops, the Museum of Modern Art, the Tourist Office, and a wide variety of shops. There is even a self-guided walking tour of paintings by famous artists who once lived and worked in Ceret. The outdoor public swimming pool at Ceret is open in July and August and there is also a water adventure park just 10 minutes away at St. Jean Lakes. The beaches of Argeles sur Mer and Coulliere are on the Mediterranean Sea 30 minutes' drive from Ceret or take the public bus to the sea. Ceret celebrates being Catalan with various events and festivals throughout the year. Early Spring sees the Mardi Gras festival and the celebration of Easter features a religious parade and open air Mass. During the first week of June, Ceret holds the week long cherry festival. There is a parade, popular outdoor market and lots of entertainment. This large house is the perfect base from which to explore the beautiful region of the Pyrennes-Orientales and enjoy all that the area has to offer and "16bis" is the ideal home base. Pyrenees-Orientales is the area of the Langedoc-Roussillon that borders Spain making short trips across the border for sightseeing, shopping or a little lunch easy. Gerona is one hour south and Barcelona is just a two hour drive away. Take one of the regular €1 buses to Perpignan for a day of sightseeing or travel further north to Carcassone by train. Visit Andorra for the day or travel on the famous 'Yellow Train' into the Pyrennes mountains. Winter: "16bis" is readily available from October for winter rentals of 2 weeks or more, and for months at a time. The winter rental fee is negotiable. You can warm your toes on those winter nights in front of the wood-burning stove in the sittingroom. There are also fixed heat pumps, portable radiators and warm fans in the bathrooms.

About the Owner

I am a retired civil servant living in Bray, Ireland and I visit Ceret regularly between visitors. I love to travel and in recent winters I have backpacked through South America, China, the Philippines and Myanmar. I was pleased to spend four days in North Korea. I reinvented myself as travel diarist Sheila Walsh and write "The Great Walsh of China"

I think I have a good idea of what we want when we rent a home. We want to feel at home in a place that reflects the local history and culture. We want to be able to do things that we can't enjoy in our own homes, often because of the weather, like dining al fresco on the rooftop terrace or star gazing with a glass of wine. We want to enjoy French cuisine and Ceret's inexpensive local restaurants oblige fabulously.

Guestbook comments from the owner

“Fantastic location, rustic charm, great facilities, delightful mixture of Spanish and French culture”

Three generations (husband and wife, five year old son and grandmother) all had a wonderfully relaxing, inspiring and fun holiday at Isis. The house is traditional, clean, comfortable and spacious and very charming!

The house has modern fittings, effective plumbing, plenty of fans and air conditioning (if you want it), great satellite TV, a range of DVDs, good communication facilities, and a new washing machine. The linen was good and there was plenty of space to dry the linen. There are two lovely sized bedrooms and a great Mezzanine with a single bed, perfect for a child or teenager (and a sofa bed in the living room).

The bedrooms all have great access to the recently renovated toilet and bathroom, and there is another bathroom with excellent shower on the ground floor too. The house is so spacious that it is particularly suited for extended family, or I imagine friends on holiday together. Lots of privacy.

A real bonus for us was having a roof terrace to enjoy! It was perfect for soaking up the atmosphere of Ceret, early morning and well into the night! The memories of eating our evening meals on the roof terrace will stay with us for many years to come! We would sit outside, listening to the lovely Catalan music drifting up from the town most evenings. Although one of the bedrooms is very soundproofed if live music isn't your thing!

The owner of the house is lovely. She was so very helpful and friendly, and couldn't do enough to assist us. The instructions that were sent before we arrived were wonderful, including detailed driving instructions to help us find the house, which was invaluable and we would have been lost without them.

The locals were lovely and friendly too, and we look back on our holiday and the house which such fond memories. We hope to return again one day!

“Wonderful location from which to discover a fascinating region.”

We had a wonderful time in Céret. With the owner's detailed directions, including photos, in hand we had no problem finding the house and key. The description of facilities in the house and advice like finding croissants nearby were very helpful, as were the brochures the owner kindly sent us in advance. Although we were there in the last week in September, we had tremendous weather.

One of the best features of the house was its location – it was great being able to walk out the door and be right at the shops, cafés, etc. We speak French and it was fun listening to conversations and also chatting with the local merchants.

The owner made herself very available for questions prior to our trip and invited us to let her know about any deficiencies during our stay. We did tell her about a couple of minor issues and she acted on them very quickly.

We are thrilled to have discovered such a lovely place!

Best regards, Joanne, Lionel and friends, Regina, Canada

Lots of character and vibrancy

  • 5 of 5

As a young person, my overall stay was very enjoyable, 16bis was very conveniently located as we were only about a minute walk, if that, from the vibrant town center. That gave my parents and I the luxury to relax when they wanted peace and quiet or to admire the views from the private roof terrace-if we didn't fancy walking around town. I spent most of my time walking around town or exploring surrounding rivers and waterfalls that I found hidden in beautiful hilly areas nearby during our two week stay as I found the social aspect very good and met lots of young, friendly, inviting people. This was a big relief for me as I went on holiday without my sister that year to keep me company when I wanted to explore etc. I explored new places with the people I had met, and they taught me a lot about their culture and the places they showed me, I'm still in contact with them now. The building itself we was staying in was very well kept and clean. Although it looks beautiful in the pictures, it looked absolutely stunning when I was face to face with it. Personally, the blue shutters on the windows were my favourite addition to the building, I thought they were very sweet and added a lot of character. The town itself has a lot of character so they did fit nicely. The facilities in the building were good, it had exactly what we needed and it was easy to find when we needed it. They house is made of stone which is cooler than modern houses, which meant we could cool down in it when we'd been in the hot weather too long, which is really useful and definitely a luxury in my opinion. The owner of the property provided us with brilliant customer service, emailing us attractions that would appeal to a wide variety of people with different interests. She emailed seeing house we were finding the house and answered any questions we had. Only a 30 second walk from the house is the town square with a few restaurants serving really lovely fresh food at good prices, which circle around a pretty fountain bang in the centre of the square. This fountain was surrounded by friendly locals chatting or playing live music whenever my parents and I ate there, creating an inviting environment for everybody, not just holiday makers. It was something to look forward to in the evenings. I would recommend the house and the holiday itself to my friends and family as it was one of the best holidays I've been on, if not the best.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to tell us about your holiday in Ceret and your stay at my house, 16bis rue de Vieux Ceret. Im so pleasd that you made new friends. I hope you can meet up with them again when you come this summer. You were so busy I wonder if you used the municipal swimming pool and tennis courts that are 8 minutes walk from the house? Maybe this year. Yes, I do enjoy hearing how visitors are finding the facilities in the house and if they have any questions and comments. I take all onboard for future improvements. Thanks for the tips from your family. I hope you enjoy your visit this summer when you'll be able to avail of the new ground floor bedsitter. You'll find that it s lovely and cool when the weather is hot. Kind regards, Sheena

Amazing character house! Roof terrace stunning!

  • 5 of 5

Wow what a fabulous house. So much space and decorated beautifully in keeping with the exposed beams, long French windows and stone walls. Great to find a place with so much character in the middle of the old town, with WiFi, sports and movie channels, air-conditioning. The modern amenities made for a hassle free stay. The highlight for me was the roof terrace which has a lovely view of the terracotta tiled rooftops and towering trees. Also I must mention the BBQ, table, chairs and sun loungers to make the most of the sunshine. Comfortable, amazing location, great value. Definitely coming back! Thank you, Sheena.

Lovely Place

  • 5 of 5

We drive here from Cambridgeshire. On arriving there was a bottle of wine and a note welcoming us. The property was clean and fresh. Contact with the owner was good and friendly.

The small town is a lovely place to stay and we would return.

Overall we had a great time in France and this was made all the better by staying at this property.

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic central location with all the amenities. Deceptively large accommodation with space for two couples and two children just a stone's throw from the Modern Art Museum, the Saturday market, fine dining, etc. Very responsive and helpful owner. Good wifi and many television/radio channels. There are AC units for use during hot weather. Ground floor shower room plus top floor toilet/basin and separate tub/shower/basin. Also basin in one bedroom. Small roof terrace gets the morning sun

Perfection Location. Gem of a house

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay for the month of February. Great walking and the weather was bright and sunny. The house is in the middle of Ceret so very near lots of shops and there is a weekly market. The house was warm and very comfortable. And the roof terrace was a great bonus.

Location

From the Owner

I bought the house, "16bis" with a view to a home that my five adult children would want to bring their friends and family to. I toured the area and decided that Ceret was the best because there is so much to do at any time of the year. Car rental is not essential and Ceret can be reached easily by public transport from three airports - Perpignan, Girona and Carcassone. I wanted French culture to be readily accessible and enjoy the Museum of Modern Art, the music concerts and the artists' walking tour. Children are well-served in Ceret with the swimming pool in July & August, an imaginative playground in the town, hillwalking, and the adventures at St. Jean Lakes 20 mins away. It is only 40 mins to Salvadore Dali's Art Museum in Figueres and 30 mins drive to the Mediterranean!

Activity and Interests

Nearest Barpub : Ceret at 200 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Ceret at 200 Metres Car: recommended

Special interest holidays:

Winter holiday: "16bis" is readily available from October for winter rentals of 3 weeks or more.. The winter rental fee is negotiable. You can warm your toes on those winter nights in front of the wood-burning stove in the sittingroom. There are also fixed heat pumps, portable radiators and warm fans in the bathrooms.

Coast/Beach:

The towns and beaches of Coulliere and Argeles are on the Mediterranean Sea 30 minutes drive away. There is a daily public bus from Ceret to the sea in the summer season. The public swimming pool in Ceret is open during July and August. At St. Jeanne Lakes 10 minutes drive away (a level terrain for cycling) there is a swimming area, an adventure playground with tree climbing, zip lines into the lake, etc. or you can take a peaceful walk around the grassy shores of the peaceful lake.

Travel:

One of the charms of Ceret is that you do not need to have a car. All public buses in the area are €1 per journey (€8 weekly pass) The nearest airports are Girona (1.5 hr drive south), Perpignan (40 minutes' drive) and Carcassone (2 hours drive). All can be reached by public transport. There is a Hertz rental agent in Ceret where you can rent by the day if necessary. There are many hillwalking trails beginning in Ceret.

Distances:

You can drive or take a bus up the Tech River Valley to other small towns. Perpignan is a 40 minute bus or car ride and there is lots to see and do there. A car enables you to drive to Salvador Dali's Museum in Figueres, Spain (40 mins) or to the famous old Yellow Train ( 1 hour+ drive). Barcelona is 2 hours drive away but well worth an overnight trip Carcassone Castle is also 2 hours drive away but can be done as a daytrip.

Further Details:

Ceret has everything you could want to see and do - and the Saturday farmers market is famous. In the summertime there is also an artisans' market on amid-week evening. There is so much music from street buskers to festival parades to classical concerts in the nearby Church. There are ATMs, banks, big and small supermarkets, "Cyberia" cyber cafe for Internet or playing video games, British Sunday papers at the nearby newsagent. Try to time your visit for when there is a festival and enjoy the parades and street theatre.

Facilities

From the Owner

The location of "16bis" is fantastic - in the heart of Ceret town. It's one minute from the front door to the boulangerie for fresh criossants! Many visitors to my home have remarked on how BIG it is. Everything comes in "twos." In fact it is two traditional 16th Century maisons de ville, joined at each level by an archway. The spacious house has two floors above ground level, two modern bathrooms, two+ bedrooms and two "Juliet" balconies! To cool you on summer days there are two wall-mounted A/C units, portable fans and ceiling fans over the beds. Many of us need WiFi to keep in touch and up-to-date and the house also has French cable TV, a new flat screen TV, and satellite TV from Britain. The moment you sit down and relax at "16bis" you will feel at home!

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: Although "16bis" is in the heart of Ceret, it is very quiet because the narrow street is pedestrian-only. The bedrooms are at the back of the house and super-quiet. The Church bells are silent from 10pm to 7:45am. This large house is not suitable for children under 5 years of age (except babes-in-arms) because of the balconies and steep stairs. Elderly people may find the stairs difficult. No dogs please, I'm allergic, and confine smoking to the terrace. The entrance hallway is spacious and ideal for leaving bikes, pushchairs, etc. A ground floor suite can be made available at extra charge on request, perhaps for a teenager, grandparent or person of limited mobility. There is a large, free public parking lot ("Les Tins") 3 minutes walk from the house, outside the old town walls. It is overlooked by the gendarmerie. There is a 2-wheeled trolley to bring your cases to the house. Because this house is very old (500+ years) and full of character (a visitor said it is "quirky") it gets dusty. That's what visitors like about it. Staying at "16bis" is often referred to as lots of fun! Outside: The two bedrooms have small exterior balconies but there is no garden as such. In the diningroom photo you will see my flowering vine growing up from the small plot of courtyard below. However the roof terrace is fantastic with a strong railings and plenty of room for 6 people to sit comfortably around the dining table with large parasol while someone manages the barbecue. There are also lounge chairs and the ultimate in privacy for discreet sunbathing! Clearly this is not a safe place for toddlers or adventurous children. Utility Room: Adjacent to the upstairs bathrooms there is a new automatic washing machine and airer to dry washing on the balcony or terrace, as well as an iron, ironing board and hair dryer. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: A hand towel is left out for each visitor, plus tea towels in the kitchen, a tablecloth in the diningroom, another for the terrace table, and each bed will have clean linen. The house is cleaned between renters. Please leave the house tidy. Other: You will come for the convenient location and stay for the roof terrace!
