About Terry Rayner

My wife and I live in the South of England with our Springer Spaniel Alfie. We first purchased our 'French idyll' as a 'project' when our children were growing up and no longer took up all of our time! We worked hard during our holidays in Brittany to turn the property from a basic, 'rustic', stable conversion into a comfortable home from home. We have left some of the original stable features and the Bretagne fireplace intact. When we are not working, we love to spend our time in Brittany. The house is set in a peaceful hamlet with the Nantes-Brest canal at the bottom of the lane. Whether you are in need of complete relaxation or a base from which to explore Brittany, our 'stable' is the perfect place.

Terry Rayner purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Terry Rayner chose Plélauff

We had looked at many houses to renovate in Brittany, but when we 'stumbled' across the stable, we fell in love with it's rural and peaceful setting. The fact that it was only 10mins from Lac de Guerledan, Brittany's largest lake, clinched the deal!

What makes this cottage unique

Whilst the property is set in a rural location, a short walk/cycle down the canal path will find you in the village of Gouarec. There is a small convenience store as well as a bakery, bars, banks and our favourite pizzeria. The nearby villages have weekly markets selling local products.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We have had three fabulous holidays here. The accommodation is clean, warm and very comfortable and has a very relaxing feel to it too. The local area is quiet and beautiful but with plenty to entertain us. The Lac which is a short drive away has beaches, boat, pedalo and canoe hire as well as bike hire to explore the local bike trails. The lac also features the best French creperie I've been to, Well worth a visit." The Cave family - Hereford

Peaceful rural property, close to village of Gouarec. Cottage is nicely decorated and well equipped

  • 5 of 5

We arrived on a rainy Easter bank holiday weekend and the very helpful and friendly neighbour, Stuart had put the wood burner on earlier warming the cottage up for our arrival. The cottage is nicely situated up a lane just outside the village of Gouarec and right next to the Nantes-Brest Canal, a very peaceful location. The cottage was clean and nicely decorated and with everything you could need.

Despite the weather, we managed to get out and about fitting in some bike rides and sightseeing. A cycle ride along the canal was so beautiful and a nice easy bike ride, seeing Kingfishers dart across the canal made my day! We also cycled to Rostrenen on market day to visit the market and also for a delicious lunch at Bistrot qui Coz , €47 for a 3 course meal inc wine and coffee. An hour and 20 minutes drive got us to the coast, we visited Trinité-sur-Mer and Concarneau, both well worth visiting.

We had a lovely, relaxing week staying in this cottage and can recommend it.

Wonderful Holiday

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the cottage over Christmas 2016 and had a lovely time. There is everything you could wish for here and we wanted for nothing. On my first morning I was having a coffee, looking out of the kitchen window and a red squirrel ran across the road - heaven! Unfortunately I didn't see him again but it made my day!

At the bottom of the road is the canal, you can walk into Gouarec in approximately 20 minutes. It is beautiful walking along the canal, we saw a Heron twice on the bank and two Egrets warming their wings at the top of a tree. If you have dogs then you can walk for as long as your legs can carry you but just remember you have to walk back!

Not far away (approx. 10 minute drive) is the Lac de Guerlédan which is well worth a visit - absolutely stunning. The water was quite low as they are making repairs but I can imagine in the summer that it would be amazing! There are lots of walks along the banks.

I wouldn't hesitate in recommending the cottage, its comfortable, the décor is lovely and the location is great. There is a supermarket, a patisserie (stunning!!) and an English shop (it was shutting down when we were there but I was informed someone else was taking over!).

Terry and Tina are a joy to deal with and will help you in any way they can to ensure you have a wonderful holiday!

Quiet and Peaceful, but not isolated.

  • 4 of 5

We had a very relaxing 2 week stay in September in this Lovely, renovated barn. Very comfortable with every convenience, I can't think of anything where we thought, " I wish there was a.....". We were lucky enough to have some sunshine , so it was lovely to have a garden to relax in, but a warning to dog owners, the garden isn't enclosed, so dogs on a lead in the garden. Not that this was an issue, as the hamlet sees very little traffic.

We lost the TVs signal at the beginning of our stay, but this quickly sorted by the very helpful neighbours.

Lots of lovely walks along the canal, and the local small town, Gouarec has most you would need.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write such a lovely review. So pleased you enjoyed your stay. We have passed on your positive feedback to Gilly and Stewart, who do a fabulous job in looking after our guests. Your comment about the garden was really useful as we hadn't considered that some dogs may like to wonder off :-/ We have updated our listing for future guests. We do hope you will visit again soon. Thank you Terry and Tina

Absolutely brilliant

  • 5 of 5

From booking to arrival everything was excellent with open communication and details about location and expectations of what to expect on arrival.

The cottage was beautiful, extremely clean and stunningly renovated and maintained with exceptional attention to homely details.

On arrival we were greeted with tea, coffee a local biscuits. There was a stack of information about the area which was really helpful in deciding where we were going to go to do all of our activities.

Definitely visit the lake beach at Lac de Guerlédan, a ten minute drive from he cottage, it's stunning. Plenty for all to do with water sports which were very reasonably priced and a selection of restaurants overlooking the lake.

I'd recommend hiring a car to visit some of the other beautiful villages and historic sites. Hiring a bike is also a great idea to cycle along the flats of the canal tow paths.

We had such a relaxing time drinking wine and star gazing in the courtyard garden we didn't want to leave!

I cannot wait to go back!

A home from home in the French countryside

  • 5 of 5

We were delighted to find that the house was a real 'home from home'. Unlike many holiday lets, this is a proper home, fitted with all the furniture and appliances that one could hope for to make one's stay comfortable. The building has been carefully and lovingly restored and the interior has been tastefully decorated and furnished. Tina certainly has a great eye for detail! The garden is a sun-trap and an ideal spot for a summer bbq among the collection of old chimney pots.

Local walks beside the nearby canal afford wonderful views.

The house is situated in central Brittany and there are endless opportunities for days out to the medieval towns and coasts that make this such a pretty part of the world.
