About the property

Traditional Algarve Cottage in peaceful location, close to the beach, large shared pool, restaurants and bars

The house has one bedroom with twin beds, a bathroom, kitchenette and living-dining room (with an additional two full-sized single beds that serve as sofa during the day). There is also a private patio with built in BBQ and outdoor furniture.

The house is located in a quiet part of the resort, surrounded by well-tended tropical gardens where you can roam freely. Just a 2-minute walk from the shared pool, tennis court, bike hire, mini club, playground, outdoor fitness area, bars, restaurants and reception.

The resort adjoins Barril beach, on the Ilha de Tavira, originally a tuna fishing station housing approximately 80 fishermen and their families during the tuna season from April to September. The old houses have been tastefully converted into bars, shops, eateries and washroom facilities (facilities are open all year round). The beach has enjoyed the blue flag award for many years. Sun loungers, umbrellas etc. are available for rent on the beach from Easter through to the end of the summer season. There is also a water sports centre with sailboats, hobie cats, kayaks, windsurfs and pedalos available for hire during the summer months. Barril beach can either be reached on foot, a leisurely 10 minute stroll along a causeway through the nature reserve, or by miniature railway, the train runs 365 days a year and provides a non-stop service throughout the day (free train passes are included with the rental).

It is less than 2km to the nearby fishing village of Santa Luzia with some of the best fish/seafood restaurants in the Algarve.

Tavira is a 5 km-drive away (there is also a public bus service from the resort) and is a wonderful historic town with highlights that include the castle, Roman bridge, central square, old market and camera obscura.

For golf lovers there are several courses just 15-20 minutes by car from the house.

The property has been inspected and complies with Portuguese fire and safety legislation. Our Turismo de Portugal registration number is 297/AL.

About Morag Neath

We are a Scottish-Belgian family who fell in love with Portugal many years ago. At first we were drawn by the outdoor activities and nature, walking in the surrounding hills and cycling in particular off season. The climate was perfect for outdoor activities and water sports and our family thoroughly enjoyed the golf courses within easy reach. Since then, with the arrival of our children, we have discovered the fantastic beaches and all the activities available during the summer months. Portugal has so much to offer, a wonderful climate all year round, friendly people, excellent cuisine and wines and wonderful nature and it’s that which has brought us back year after year.

Why Morag Neath chose Tavira region

We have owned a house in this area for many years and love it! We travelled the length and breadth of the Algarve to find the property and felt this area was by far the best, with beautiful nature in the heart of the Ria Formosa Nature reserve and easily accessible as close to Faro airport and the charming nearby historic town of Tavira. Spain is also just a half hour drive and great to just pop across the border for an afternoon or to explore more of the region of Andalucía.

What makes this cottage unique

This property is ideally located within the holiday village, in a quiet area just a hundred metres from all the activities and facilities of the resort. The beach is within walking distance and you are on the doorstep of a nature reserve. Plenty to see and do in the surrounding area for the more adventurous or just enjoy the fact that you have everything you need for a perfect holiday at your disposal within the resort!

We renovated the house in July 2014.

Well equipped clean and tidy property

Spent 5 days here in October, very nice cottage with all you would need, really nice area with lots to do and near amenities, Taveria only about 4 km away. A nice little train to take you to the beach, which was truly stunning. In our view unless you are happy to spend all your time at the beach or by the pool you would defiantly need a car, we had a taxi most evenings into Taveria which cost between 7 and 9 euros each way.

Great holiday!

My wife and I enjoyed our week's holiday immensely. The chalet was fine for our needs - and adequately equipped. We would have preferred firmer mattresses, though. The chalet was clean when we arrived and the person who cleans arrived as we were leaving the chalet on departure - very efficient!

There was an on-site supermarket within the Pedras d'el Rei complex (quite expensive) for usual requirements, but we also managed a much cheaper shop at the LIDL supermarket in Tavira.

The facilities seemed fine for us and although the WiFi could only be realistically obtained in the reception area it was possible to use data-roaming easily and effectively in the chalet.

Barril Beach was lovely - uncrowded usually and generally excellent weather, although the sea was quite cold. There was also quite a chill wind at times. Getting to and from was not difficult by foot - but we also made use of the train. As we hired a vehicle we were able to explore the area a little and ventured into the Serra region for some walking. Tavira was a very attractive town too.

The basket of guides was helpful as were the comments in the visitors' book concerning good places to eat. We had two excellent meals in Santa Lucia - the farewell meal of swordfish steaks in the Alcatruz restaurant was superb!

I would have little hesitation in recommending the property and the location to others.

Extremely comfortable, spacious and clean typical Portuguese villa

Morag the owner had left us a lovely bottle of wine and water for our arrival. For a one bedroom villa it was extremely spacious, the kitchen was well equipped for preparing meals when we didnt go out. Beds were comfortable. It was also nice to have an outside veranda to sit outside to enjoy a drink in the late afternoon. certainly would use the villa again due to its exceptional value and its location next to one of the best beaches in the whole of the Algarve.

Birds and Nature and Food

I enjoyed the villa very much. It was cozy, well equipped and vert clean. The mattresses were very comfortable. Morag was very helpful and provided excellent care during my stay. I enjoyed the closeness of the village and the beach. Restaurants and food shopping in Santa Luzia and Tavira are fantastic. It was great. thank you Morag.

Perfectly situated cottage

The cottage was well-equipped and made a perfect base for our winter break. It was warm enough to take breakfast outside each day in January on the private walled terrace. It's situated on a holiday complex but doesn't feel that way, as the whole area is well landscaped and there are ancient olive trees. It's with a 30 minute walk along a well-lit promenade for visiting good fish restaurants and also within an easy walk to the beach. It's a great base for relatively easy walks by the coast or in the hills and for observing bird life. The only thing on the downside are the beds, which are soft mattresses on solid raised platforms (as are the couches in the living area) which may not suit anyone with back problems.
