Stunning villa in amazing grounds

  • 5 of 5

We were 2 families of 4 and the villa was ideal for us, would also be ideal for grandparents accompanying you on holiday. The villa has everything you could expect and more. Only downside was that it wasn't very child friendly (lots of breakables about). The pool was beautiful and warm and the outdoor space around it felt like a 5 star hotel. Fabulous outdoor spaces. Walking distances of an amazing icrecream cafe, bar, bakery and pizza places (c20mins with small kids). So good we hardly left it the whole week!

Rural Retreat - Lake Garda

  • 4 of 5

Writing this review from the villa - It's our first Italian holiday and Villa Docciolina is in a lovely rural setting above lake garda and near Toscolina Moderno. Only 90 minutes from Verona it's an easy getaway but definitely requires a car to enjoy the local area. There isn't a massive amount within walking distance. So far we've hit the tourist areas of Limone and Malcesine on day trips. Great for a day but our preference has been the quieter areas of Gargnano and less popular resorts around the lake. Highlights are eating at The Belvedere - a restaurant 10 mins drive from the house in the hills. Warm Italian welcome and great food - stay away from the lakeside restaurants in town in my opinion. We also hired a speed boat from Salo - www.motonauticazanca.it - these guys were amazing, friendly, helpful and spoke great English. We opted for them over local boat hire because of their more upmarket approach and support. Overall a great location, nice house and Christina from the agency could not have been more helpful when we arrived. She also speaks several languages making life very simple and offering a concierge service. There is currently a building work going on at the villa plot next door which has been a little less tranquil by the pool. I imagine this will be short-lived once the villa is finished and resume it's rural peace and quiet.

Tomorrow we have a local chef cooking for us at the house. If sitting outside generally in the evenings, bring mosquito repellent as per any rural setting on a warm summer night. We have an 18month old and she's enjoyed the flat setting and large areas to run around.

About Toscolano Maderno:

The Story of Toscolano Maderno Many tourists are attracted by its large and beautiful beaches and by its mile long beach promenade, but Toscolano Maderno has also many interesting monuments including:

- the Church of Sant'Andrea from the 12th century is one of the most beautiful Romanesque churches in northern Italy. The Christian builders reused many of the building blocks from the original ancient roman temple. See if you can spot the pagan carvings in the stones, turned upside down to defuse the pagan magic! Located on the lungo lago in the centre of Maderno.

- the Church of San Pietro e Paolo, in Toscolano, was built in the

Renaissance style of the 16th century and has 22 paintings by the famous venetian painter Andrea Celesti. Located on the main road, just by the paper factory. Behind it, going towards the lake on the left, you will find the remains of the Roman Villa mentioned below.

- The tiny Church of San Michele in Gaino is a lovely destination for an relaxing nature hike, served with walking trails that lead right to it, the church is in a breathtaking spot on the crest of the mountain, with absolutely stunning lake views in every direction.

- the remains of the Roman Villa, thought to be built by Publius Nonius Asprenate in 38 AD. Although the area hasn't been fully excavated yet, and it is not yet a public tourist site, archaeologists have found evidence of a variety of buildings through the area, and have uncovered tombstones, mosaics and fragments of some frescos which you can see from outside the fences. Just behind the church of san Pietro and san Paolo, on the left of the parking lot going down towards the paper factory and the lake. the Valle delle Cartiere (the valley of the paper mills) a wonderful sight along the river Toscolano. It is not only a Nature Park

but also one of the most important industrial archaeological sites of Europe, famous for its paper production since the early

1500s. The paper factory is now a complete ghost town, in an extraordinary natural context. Stop first at the museum in the

largest old mill, and then follow the river upstream passing the ruins of other old paper mills to see the wild and romantic

gorge that offers swimming and a fly fishing opportunities. The paths can be followed on foot or bicycle only.

Located in a sunny spot on the Toscolano river delta, Toscolano Maderno settles on a vast headland at the foot of Monte

Pizzoccolo (1582 m) and Monte Castello di Gaino (866m). Once two towns, Toscolano and Maderno are now united into

a single city. There many places of interest including ancient Roman ruins and the duomo built on the original site of a

ancient Roman Temple. All of Toscolano was once a single roman country estate for a patrician family from Rome, and

Roman remnants can be seen in the most unusual places.
