About the property

Spacious farmhouse with garden and pool in a peaceful rural location

Our farmhouse is situated in a small hamlet on the edge of the village, Pleuville.

It is particularly suitable for families with children, or groups wanting to walk or cycle, but everyone will be able to enjoy a relaxing holiday here at Le Masdieu.

You are assured a warm welcome from Jackie, who will meet you on arrival and show you around the property.

The living accommodation is all on the ground floor with easy access from the kitchen area to the dining area outside. The rooms are spacious and clean; 3 bedrooms, 1 ensuite and 1 bathroom, main kitchen and dining area and a separate sitting room. We have kept the exposed beams and original stonework in some of the rooms and put a woodburning stove into the original fireplace.

The garden is about half an acre and is planted with fruit trees and shrubs. However there is a large, flat grassed area suitable for games. The private swimming pool has decking with sun loungers for your comfort. There is an additional seating/barbeque area next to the pool which means you can sit in the shade but keep be at hand for the pool.

Broadband is being connected mid January 2018 so free Wifi access will be available this year.

The area is well suited to walking and cycling. Bicycles and all the equipment can be hired and delivered to the door by Bike Hire Direct, which takes away the hassle of bringing it all from home.

About Jackie Bowell

We live in the Scottish Highlands with our 2 sons and labrador Bess. We have enjoyed visiting France over the years and are delighted to now have somewhere to come to regularly and get to know. We were lucky enough to meet Jackie and Tony, who live in Pleuville and they now manage and maintain the farmhouse for us. They are a lovely couple. Jackie will give you a warm welcome and Tony can fix just about anything!

Jackie Bowell purchased this farmhouse in 2008

Why Jackie Bowell chose Pleuville

We bought the farmhouse because we saw the lifestyle friends of ours have, who were living in the area. We loved the relaxed pace of life and the emphasis on family and food! We intend to spend more time than just holidays living in the house in the near future. Meanwhile we have renovated the building, which had cooking utensils still hanging in the fireplace, no toilet facilities, just the small stone sink, which is still in the kitchen area. We have kept much of the character of the place with exposed beams and stonework but modernised the facilities!

What makes this farmhouse unique

The house and garden are all on the one level while the countryside is very gently rolling. You can enjoy the wonderful sunsets in an open sky; there is a great feeling of space. Evening meals, sitting outside, eating fresh food, drinking great wine and in good company are what its all about.

The pool is close to the house and has a barbecue and seating area right next to it so you can relax and keep an eye on those in the water.

There are plenty of activities in the surrounding area for all the family. All the family love La Vallee de Singes which allows you to be up close to the monkeys. The tree-top climbing activity at Massignac is a challenge and good fun; the nearby lakes provide sailing opportunities. My husband favours Le Vieux Cormenier, a museum which tells a story about farming life.

Pleuville has it's own village shop/bar/tabac, where fresh bagettes and pastries can be purchased daily along with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine!

Charroux is the nearest small town (10km) famous for its Benedictine Abbey, with a few small shops and bars. Pressac is 7km, with a well stocked shop, 3 Restaurants and a Pizza takeaway!

Stunning Property in a Beautiful Area

  • 5 of 5

We've had a lovely time at this beautiful, well equipped, farmhouse. It's within easy reach of amazing Chateaux plus a wealth of picturesque villages containing their own unique cafes, bars, restaurants, shops and markets each week. Here's a few of our highlights:

Vallee du singes- An absolute must visit. Monkeys, monkeys and more monkeys, some of which will be hanging over your heads!

Parc de la belle - take a stroll round the beautiful gardens (with numerous tree-houses and cabins on the grounds) and enjoy some refreshments on the terrace (best to check opening times).

Civray - great market on a Tuesday. It has a few good cafes and a particularly nice restaurant on the river called Hotel du Commerce. This offers a great lunch between noon and 2pm

Verteuil-sur-Charente - stunningly pretty village and amazing Chateaux. Tours on Saturday and Sunday at 3 pm (only €6). Take your pick of cafe or restaurant with a Chateaux view.

Confolens- nice town. Lovely cafe west side of bridge on edge of the river and supermarket with all the supplies you'll need.

Ferme de Chassagne- great farmers market that starts at 4pm and has entertainment all evening. Take your own plates and cutlery. Plenty of cheese, pate, beer, wine etc to buy - they'll even cook any raw meat you buy! Check for dates.

Rochefoucauld - Some distance away, but if you're coming from Bordeaux, this is a lovely village for a break. Nice restaurants, bars and cafes and an impressive Chateaux too!

Poitiers - we visited the city on a (rare) rainy day. Amazing gardens and historic centre that has great places to see and eat and has fantastic shops.

Home away from Home

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 6 have just returned from a two week stay at Le Masdieu and we would highly recommend it for a family holiday. We were made to feel extremely welcome on our arrival by the manager, Jackie, who was very friendly and helpful. The well equipped, spacious farmhouse is situated in a very rural setting and is lovely and quiet and peaceful. The night sky is amazing as there is no light pollution. The stars are great and the sunsets stunning. We were also entertained by bats at dusk. Because of the remoteness of the property car hire is essential for the stay but there is plenty to see and do in the surrounding area and it is an ideal area for cycling (Bike hire is available and there are cycle routes nearby, although the country roads are very quiet and safe). There is a good sized swimming pool in the grounds and a large grassed area suitable for ball games. There is a small tabac in the local village of Pleuville within walking distance and the nearest supermarket is in Confolens about 15 minutes drive away. The area is steeped in history and the surrounding towns/villages are fascinating to visit. In addition we can recommend the monkey sanctuary (Les Vallee des Singes), velo rail and the Roman archaelogical site Cassomagnus. A home away from home, except it was sunny and relaxing!

Complete relaxation

  • 5 of 5

After a sleepless couple of weeks in a noisy French campsite last year, we decided to go for something more tranquil this time. We definitely made the right decision as the rural location of the farmhouse guarantees peace and quiet. The only noise we heard was from the occasional rumbling of the farmer's tractor, the sheep bleating in the next field and the distant moo-ing of cows - perfect!

The property itself is near-enough perfect too; basic but comfortable furnishings, all in good working order and immaculately clean on arrival.

The lovely Jackie there was to greet us and she then popped over every few days to clean the pool and mow the lawn. She was so helpful and even let us use the spare fridge when ours was full as we had visitors staying.

There is plenty of information in the folder about days out and places to eat but we would also recommend the Hostellerie de Charlemagne in Confolens, which is nearer than the restaurant listed in Civray. It's a very traditional French restaurant run by a lovely, friendly lady and her husband. Not cheap, but great for a splash-out meal or two. Don't be but off by the old-fashioned interior - the food is superb.

When not eating out, our evenings were spent barbecuing, playing boules and watching the bats emerge from the old barn. As there is virtually no light pollution, the place is great for stargazing too.

We would love to return to Le Masdieu, possibly in the winter when it would be really cosy with the wood burning stove.

Many thanks Jackie for a truly wonderful holiday.

Fantastic, comfortable house

  • 5 of 5

Stayed for just three nights in this comfortable, clean, spacious house. In the middle of the French countryside this quaint and well kept property provided us with the ideal place to relax. The rooms were of good size and were very comfortable, and with two comprehensive bathrooms it was made even more so. During the day the pool and decking area made for an ideal sun trap and in the evenings we made good use of the barbecue facilities. There was a small village very close by with a small shop which was convenient. 15/20 minutes in a car and you could reach a large supermarket. Overall the property itself was great and was enhanced by the location. A perfect place for a relaxing getaway.
