About the property

Cottage in Whitby, North Yorkshire Moors, Yorkshire, England - Only A Few Minutes Walk From The Harbour and Beaches. Unlimited WiFi and Freesat TV. Regret no pets

Situated in the historic old town of Whitby, just a short stroll from the colourful harbour overlooking and almost protected by the abbey ruins. Famed for its connections with Captain James Cook and Bram Stoker's Dracula, Whitby is a bustling seaside town steeped in history and boasting a 3 mile stretch of award winning sandy beaches, cobbled streets, ginnels and alleyways lined with antique and curio shops, inns and tea rooms serving some of Yorkshire’s finest cuisine. Impressive ships such as The Grand Turk and the Endeavour replica often visit the port. Fishing trips and the stunning Pannet Park home to the Cook Museum are all on your doorstep. Step back in time as you visit the smugglers coves of Robin Hoods Bay, Staithes and Runswick Bay untouched by the hands of time and a must when visiting this area. The North Yorkshire Moors National Park is a 10 minute drive where cycle tracks and bridle paths lead to pretty little villages tucked away deep in the valleys, or take a more leisurely journey through the glorious Esk Valley into ’Heartbeat's’ very own village of Goathland on board the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Train. An 18-hole golf course, crazy golf, boating, go-carting and paddling pool are all available on the west cliff. Within easy access to the market towns of Pickering, Kirkbymoorside and Helmsley. Shop 20 yards, pub 50 yards. Lobster Pot Cottage sleeps up to six people in two double bedrooms - both en-suite - and a twin bedroom situated next to the house bathroom with wc, bath and shower. There is also a separate downstairs wc. A high quality travel cot and high chair are also available. Outside, there is a small rear courtyard with garden furniture and potted plants and, rare for Whitby, there is private parking for one car. Unlimited Broadband WiFi and Freesat TV with DVD player are provided. There is strictly no smoking inside the property and we regret that we are unable to accept bookings with pets.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Super location in town for accessing shops & restaurants. Comfy cottage, well equipped, good space/storage.

D. B., West Midlands, April 2014

Very enjoyable week, beautiful area for walking. Cottage comfortable and well equipped.

Barbara, Dorothy & Linda, Chester, May 2014

The property is right in the heart of Whitby, close to all amenities. There is ample space, a well stocked kitchen and a small private yard to sit out in. Parking space is a big plus. We enjoyed the view of the abbey and church from the top bedroom window.

Cottage was faultless, couldn’t have asked for more! Great location, very clean, and well equipped and good value for money, would definitely return, took our 2 grandchildren and have never seen two happier kids.

A great house, conveniently situated. Perfect!!

  • 5 of 5

Lovely house. Excellent position with own parking (a bonus). Opposite Poundland so ideal for bits like bread and milk. Magpie Restaurant on the front was excellent but I would book first. The American style diner around the corner on Flowergate was great. And a hearty breakfast was had at the Tiffin cafe. Basic inside but couldn't fault the breakfast! The Board Inn on the opposite side of the river was friendly and the meal was great! A day out to Goathland (Heartbeat) was close by and interesting even if you didnt watch the programme.

About the house, plenty of space in the house (4 adults) Well laid out. The main reasons why I chose this property was obviously the location but also because the both en-suites had walk in showers. 3 of the party are 70+ and don't like trying to climb into a bath to shower so that was great. Also an additional toilet off the lounge was a great thought too! Kitchen well equipped. The property was also warm in fact probably a bit too warm for us older clients but the heating seemed to be on through the night, so we turned off a lot of the radiators even though a couple of the days were bitterly cold, it was still overly warm in the house. Rooms all a great size, clean, bright and comfortable beds. As there aren't any sets of drawers in the rooms, I needed to hang everything up but not many hangers provided so maybe bulk up on hangers, but I think that was the only negative. I know the sofa's are being replaced (we just missed out on the new ones!!!) Overall excellent accommodation and I would definitely recommend. Plenty of communication with David, nothing too much trouble. Thanks! Re the lady who complained in a previous review, I really don't understand how she could give such a bad review. I could have gone into every nook and cranny to find a grubby mark somewhere which could apply to everywhere we've stayed over the years, but I'm on holiday and I'm realistic. So for us it's 10 out of 10!!

Owner's Response: Yes, it's a very central and practical property (and the parking helps). Sorry about the lack of clothes hangers - we usually keep about a dozen wooden ones in each of the wardrobes so, if there were fewer than that, I'm afraid they must have gone walkies...... We will, of course, replace them. The central heating is on a pre-set programme, controlled by a touch screen. We have no objection to guests tweaking things to their liking, as we can easily reset things when you leave. Our new sofas arrive in a couple of weeks, together with other lounge furniture. We firmly believe in replacing when required, so you'll be able to take advantage of them on your next visit.

Love this cottage, so conveniently situated too!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at Lobster Pot Cottage twice now for winter weekends with friends , 6 of us in total. Each time we have found the cottage to be of a high standard, layout is fantastic for 6 adults, its clean and has all that we needed and more in the kitchen. All lovely clean bed linen and towels provided. The cottage location is brilliant too, right in the centre of Whitby,so no need to use the car at all. The free car parking space is a real help.

The owner, David, could not have been more helpful in providing all the information required before arriving at the cottage.

My friends and I will certainly be booking again in the future and I have no hesitation at all in recommending Lobster Pot cottage to all my friends and family.

Fantastic Location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Lobster Pot Cottage for 5 days before Christmas. Our party consisted of 3 adults and 2 children, We found the central location of the cottage perfect for exploring the sights of Whitby, with the added bonus of a parking space.

It was very well equipped benefiting from 3 bathrooms, and 3 very comfortable bedrooms. Unlimited Wifi to keep the children happy, puzzles games and plenty of tourist information to hand.

The communication with the owners prior to and during our stay was faultless.

We would definitely recommend this cottage, and we look forward to staying here again.

Cottage not to 5 star standard

  • 1 of 5

Having read reviews about this cottage I booked it. But on arrival what a disappointment. A very tired cottage in need of redecoration, kitchen was dirty, we had to clean it as there were bits in the drawers and table dirty. Dirty crockery and glasses in cupboards. Dishwasher didn't clean properly. Suite in lounge had stains on it and wallpaper torn in lounge. General grubby dirty marks on all doors and walls. En suite toilet in top bedroom didn't work. Stains on carpets. Windows were filthy. I have self catered for 30 years and have never been disappointed but this is a cottage I would not be staying in again.

Owner's Response: As responsible owners, we genuinely welcome feedback - both good and bad, and we try to act on the latter as soon as is feasible. On this occasion, the guests sent us an extensive email after their return home listing various criticisms they had with the cottage. This was very helpful however, had they contacted us while they were still at the property, we would have made great efforts to investigate any faults or shortcomings and put them right where practicable. We visited the property after the next guests had left and found many of the comments to be unfounded, or at the very least, exaggerated. We are not at all complacent and recognise that holiday lets (particularly one as popular as this) require constant maintenance. We will leave potential guests to draw their own conclusions; over the last 2 years we have received twelve 5 star reviews - this is the first negative review that has been posted.

A lovely cottage, great location

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely family stay at Lobsterpot cottage. The location is brilliant & close to the shops & restaurants. There is also a parking space allocated to the cottage which is great. The booking process is faultless & the owners are really nice to deal with. We visit Whitby at least two times a year & would certainly love to stay at Lobsterpot cottage again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review. As owners, we have abandoned the use of soulless letting agencies, much preferring to talk to our own guests ourselves. We are pleased that you appreciate the personal contact that we employ, and very much hope to welcome you back at some future date.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

Whitby Beach : Access from town, or down the ramps from the West Cliff car parks - or by the cliff lift. This is where the beach huts are, and there's a lifeguard on duty during the summer months.

Tate Hill Beach : Within the harbour itself. Small, but perfectly formed - offering some very safe bathing. Good access from here to the East pier which is perfect for a romantic stroll or a spot of fishing.

Sandsend, Kettleness and Runswick Bay are only a short drive north of Whitby.

Travel:

Arriva runs bus services connecting Whitby to Scarborough and Middlesbrough. The nearest airport, about 42 miles (68 km) from Whitby, is Durham Tees Valley. The town is served by Whitby railway station, which is the terminus of the Esk Valley Line from Middlesbrough. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway operates a summer service between Whitby and the market town of Pickering, using vintage steam locomotives.

Distances:

Robin Hood's Bay 6 miles (9 km), Staithes 10 miles (17 km), Scarborough 21 miles (33 km), Pickering 21 miles (33 km), Middlesborough 31 miles (50 km), York 48 miles (78 km), Durham 62 miles (100 km), Newcastle 72 miles (116 km).

Further Details:

Whitby is a seaside town, and has an established maritime, mineral and tourist heritage. Its East Cliff is home to the ruins of Whitby Abbey, the town's oldest and most prominent landmark. Other significant features include the swing bridge, which crosses the River Esk and the harbour, which is sheltered by the grade II listed East and West piers. The town's maritime heritage is commemorated by statues of Captain Cook and William Scoresby, as well as the whalebone arch that sits at the top of the West Cliff. The town also has a strong literary tradition and has featured in literary works, television and cinema, perhaps most famously in Bram Stoker's novel, Dracula. The fishing port emerged during the Middle Ages and developed important herring and whaling fleets, and was (along with the nearby fishing village of Staithes) where Captain Cook learned seamanship. Its attraction as a tourist destination is enhanced by its proximity to the high ground of the North York Moors National Park, its Heritage Coastline and by its association with the horror novel Dracula. Jet and alum were mined locally. Whitby Jet, which was mined by the Romans and Victorians became fashionable during the 19th century. The Pavilion Theatre built in the 1870s in West Cliff hosts a range of events during the summer months. For over four decades the town has hosted the Whitby Folk Week, and since 1993 the bi-annual Whitby Gothic Weekend for members of the Goth subculture. "Whitby Now" is an annual live music event featuring local bands in the Pavilion which has taken place since 1991. Since 2008, the Bram Stoker Film Festival has taken place in October.
