Overview

Property

Updated: 19-May-2015
Cottage in Snape, Nr. Saxmundham, Suffolk, England - Close To Snape Maltings And 20 Minutes From Aldeburgh

The cottage has 2 bedrooms with one double bed and 2 singles. It is situated between the villages of Snape and Blaxhall on a quiet road with fields all around. There is a large mostly grass garden with patio and off road parking. The cottage was built in the 18th century and has stone floors, low ceilings with beams and an old stone sink. It has a modern recently completed bathroom extension.

What a great find.

  • 5 of 5

We have now stayed here several times and have loved every moment of it. The cottage is surrounded by fields and we have enjoyed seeing the deer as well as woodpeckers, finches etc in the lovely garden.

The cottage is all about peace and quiet with only the occasional vehicle passing through the lane . Saying that, the coastline is only several miles away which is a great bonus as far as we are concerned. I imagine there is plenty of scope in the surrounding area for anyone who enjoys walking, birdspotting etc etc - plenty of wildlife about. On top of this you have Snape just up the road and towns such as Saxmundham just a few miles away. There is also a nice looking pub in the village which we have not yet visited ourselves.

The cottage itself is full of rustic charm. There is quite a lot of pottery dotted around as well as art on the walls. Along with the tiled floors, old style kitchen sink, wooden latched doors etc all add to the character of the place.

The owner Alan is the most helpful, accomodating, easy going and friendly person to deal with. We are yet to meet him but have spoken a lot on the phone. He makes you feel that you are very welcome and to treat the property like it's your own. To summarise, we highly recommend the cottage and anyone who does stay will want to return. If like us you will want to come back again and again. Thanks Alan for everything and we will be back in January for our first visit of 2016.

Charming and unspoilt.

  • 5 of 5

I'm very surprised at the negative review, we've been to this cottage more than once and as you can see from the picture, it's not been "over modernised". So why complain about uneven floors when the photos clearly show them before you book? Clearly the negative review has come from someone who perhaps should have chosen a property more obviously up to date in its interior, for what was supposed to be an extended stay. The cottage is lovely, and as you can see from the visitors book, many people have enjoyed its very old world rustic charm. Don't go there if you are really a clean freak, choose somewhere neat and clinical. Many people do need a high standard of cleanliness for personal and health reasons, that's fine, but we're not all the same, some of us prefer atmosphere, and it's easy here to imagine yourself living in another era, ( while enjoying the benefits of TV and wifi as well ).

Owner's Response: Re: South Cottage, Blaxhall I agree. South Cottage cottage is unspoilt and has real character and charm. It's uneven brick floors, and daubed walls are of the period and part of it's unique character. The location with its window views (meadows, ancient oak trees, and lovely garden, 18th century ancient shed that used to be the village laundry, plus an up to date one with bicycles for visitor use), is a treat for the eye - and apart from birdsong - is a quiet and peaceful retreat. The owner is relaxed and dogs and children are welcome. Many visitors return - as witnessed by the comments ion the visitors books. An ideal place for birdwatching and walks. If you are looking for beige, clinical and Ikea - this is not the place for you - but if you like quirky, (with an excellent selection of books and vinyl), mis-match and lots of homemade beautiful pottery and paintings, South Cottage is an absolute delight!

Wonderful cottage, but very dirty.

In need of temporary accomodation we originally booked this cottage for a month.

The cottage itself is lovely - unmodernised, with the original brick floors, a stone sink and large garden surrounded by trees - perfect for children, and a real suntrap. Unfortunately as the owner was showing us around it became apparent that it was also filthy. I'd hazard a guess that it hadn't been properly cleaned in several years: The kitchen smelt of stale cooking fat (the cooker was very splattered, so too the wall behind it) and even the recently installed modern bathroom looked neglected with dead insects all over the place, two tide rings around the bath and spider spots in the corners.

On first broaching the subject with the owner I was met with flat denial - he'd 'just cleaned, but might have missed one or two cobwebs' - I ended up getting quite upset with him, and he basically told me that the dirt was part of the rustic charm, at which point my husband took over and got him to agree to paying for cleaners to come in.

My first job after the owner left was to go out and buy cleaning proucts in order to make the place reasonably habitable until the cleaners arrived.

Several phone calls with the owner ensued during the next few days in which he made it quite clear he would like us to go, that the dirt was part and parcel of the cottage and my dislike of it was my problem.

To be fair he did, as I said, book cleaners who came and did their best in the time allowed but he booked them only for our stay (and it was five days before they arrived) - it is not something which will continue, so future holidaymakers should be aware that the cottage is unlikely to have been cleaned before their stay.

We left after a week as who wants to stay where they are not wanted?! I am quite sure too, that the owner still believes we were unreasonable in our expectation that the cottage would be clean.

N.B: summer visitors should be aware that according to a notice in the kitchen neither the multi fuel stove or the calor gas fire are to be used during summer months. As the only other form of heat is storage heating I imagine you are expected to put on another jumper and put up with the chill along with the dirt!

Additionally the floor is uneven and the cooker rocks badly - dangerous when cooking. Why it hasn't been stabilised with a wedge I cannot begin to imagine, and the door handle to the oven is broken, making opening and closing the door rather challenging!
