Newly refurbished 5 star Luxury Cottage (sleeps 8) with stunning views

Overview

Property

Updated: 09-Dec-2016
Spacious cottage with 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms and incredible views in a peaceful rural settin

Nell Tom is a very spacious cottage and has been refurbished to the very highest standards. Everything is brand new and designed for comfort.

The views will knock you out! The peace and isolation you will enjoy will ensure that you have a relaxing holiday. We defy you not to fall in love with Swaledale as we did when we bought the property.

The cottage is approached by a twisty road to Blades and then by a private road. There is plenty of parking and a large enclosed garden, with sunny south facing patio and even larger south facing lawn.

Families are welcome. We provide high chair, travel cot and stairgates as well as toys and books. There are outdoor toys to play on in the garden and the patio is secure and fenced.

No smoking. No dogs.

DVDs books and board games for adults and young people are also provided.

Walkers welcome. There is plenty of space for storing muddy boots and hanging coats. We provide walking books and maps.

Cyclists welcome. There is room in a secure shed for your bikes.

We provide linen and towels and array of useful items as well as a welcome tray.

You will find all the tourist information you need on our website and leaflets in the cottage.

Changeovers are on Saturdays. Guests are welcome to arrive after 4pm and must vacate the house by 10 the following week.

Family reunions and groups of friends welcome, but it is not suitable for hen/stag nights.

It is half a mile and an easy walk to Low Row where there is an award winning gastro pub, The Punch Bowl Inn. It is about 4 miles to Reeth, which has pubs, teashops, ice cream parlour, a post office, doctor’s surgery and the weekly market on the green.

Other activities available on request such as fishing, guided walks and photography workshops.

Hampers, catering (full service or drop off) and babysitting can be arranged in advance.

Weekly bookings only. Short breaks only in low season or special circumstances.

About the Owner

We are a family who love the Dales and have been visiting Swaledale since our children were tiny. They have grown up as dual nationals (We live in the South West!) and have both now left home, but continue to love to visit Swaledale for every holiday.

We love the peace and quiet, the walking and the birds and wildlife.

We had the opportunity to buy Laykin in 2005 and Nell Tom in 2012 and have enjoyed both renovation projects and the chance to spend time there ourselves as well as letting the properties out.

Can't be bettered!

  • 5 of 5

We’ve just returned from a simply stunning one-week stay at Nell Tom. I booked the cottage as a 40th birthday treat – spending it with my ten month old and a big group of revolving friends and family. It is a truly special part of the world and Nell Tom sits in a wonderful position surveying the Swaledale landscape. Blessed with good weather we did a number of the walks direct from the house and from surrounding villages Reeth and Muker, amongst the lovely touches offered by the Owners was a series of map pouches complete with OS Maps and written walk guides. With several small children amongst the guests we found the safe walled garden was a brilliant venue for reconstruction of 2016 Olympic highlights and general toddling - can’t imagine the effort taken to get this so level as it is set amongst steeply sloping hills but it was much appreciated. The interior of the house is beautiful – light and airy but also carefully thought out and with first class finishes. We loved the well-stocked kitchen (even a bean trimmer….actually none of us knew how to use this even after 30 minutes of fiddling) luxurious bathrooms and comfy beds. As others have noted the initial drive up to the cottage is a little hair-raising but actually becomes much easier second time around when one knows the route. It is a lovely walk down to the Punchbowl Inn in Low Row- we had a couple of meals there and whilst the night time menu seems a bit more adventurous than lunchtime both were good. Louise and Jonathan very kindly arranged the installation of a Hot Tub for our stay which was a great hit with all ages, I think it will be very hard to beat the holiday memory of sitting in the warm bubbles with a glass of champagne watching the red moon rise over the ridge with the valley extending below us. So we have all resolved to do it again and come back next year! Thank you for such a special experience.

How Do You Follow That?

  • 5 of 5

Well, we have stayed in holiday homes, home and abroad, for the past 30 years but never have we come across such a perfect cottage. The facilities and sheer luxury are outstanding and when you take into account the idyllic location I don't think we will ever beat this!

The hillside location is amazing with panoramic views towards Reeth and across the Dale.

The property was immaculately clean and all fixtures and furnishings near new. Also, there were outdoor toys provided which the young children in the party made full use of.

The internet connection was surprisingly good considering the relatively remote location and the WiFi throughout the house useful. Watching Netflix on each of 3 the Smart TVs worked a treat.

A couple of us took advantage of the excellent cycling in the area. The house has a secure lockup for several bikes and there is even a nod to the 2014 Tour De France visit to Swaledale in an amazing piece of stonework art embedded the garden wall. The walk from the house to some good tarmac is about 250 metres and the climb at the end of the ride back up the hill is a good little tester ;)

Louise, the owner, communicated clearly throughout both before and after our stay (when she correctly surmised that we had left with one of the cottage keys!).

I case you haven't guessed already, I would highly recommend this property.

Owner's Response: Thank you for this glowing review. It was a pleasure to have you as our guests, and lovely that the children had great weather for playing on the patio and in the garden, which was designed with young children in mind. Our housekeeper should be justly proud of your comments on how clean everything was, she is one in a million, and we are lucky to have someone who is so meticulous and house proud. Glad you liked the stone bike and we think you deserve medals for even attempting to cycle up Brocca bank! Come back and stay with us again soon!

Superb

  • 5 of 5

The Stay in Swaledale properties raise the bar to a new standard. The quality and finish of their two immaculately renovated properties is utterly remarkable and probably unique in this area. We have stayed in both Laykin and Nell Tom and we wouldn't go anywhere else now. Aside from the breathtaking views, which in our opinion are unbeatable, the accommodation is absolutely perfect - no expense has been spared and no detail has been overlooked. The beds and bathrooms are of the highest standard - everything works and bedding/towels top quality. The kitchens are incredibly well equipped - beautiful crockery and everything you could ever need. The welcome hampers are very generous and stocked with high-end products. Living areas are cosy, warm and comfortable. The properties are never anything but spotlessly clean on arrival and the owners are so thoughtful with the extras and details - for example a pair of binoculars for spotting the wildlife and birds (plenty of oyster catchers, curlews and lapwings) maps (with waterproof cases!), information about local attractions, useful hooks everywhere and plenty of storage for coats, muddy boots and family paraphernalia. We have had some of our best family times here and our children look forward to returning each year. Nell Tom in particular is great for children with a lovely lower lawned area big enough for games. Whatever the weather, you will never tire of the views and if you are lucky (as we have generally been) you will have plenty of sunshine and be able to get out and do some of the best walking Yorkshire has to offer - from the front door. I could go on at length and cannot recommend this property highly enough. My advice would be to stop looking anywhere else and book here!

Wow! What a spectacular location in Swaledale

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful cottage nestles in the hills overlooking the Swaledale valley that runs through from Keld to Reeth.

The location on its own is priceless and the owners are fortunate to have 2 superbly finished and well maintained holiday lets there. Its obvious the owners take great pride in the property as its spotlessly clean and you want for nothing the even a lovely welcome pack was left it the kitchen with cake biscuits tea milk etc. Just the ticket after a long drive up from Hampshire. The bedrooms were very comfortable and the bed huge. The kitchen is well equipped even with an optional Ager if you want to go traditional with the cooking. the boot room is great for unloading all you gear after a hard days walking and warm too to dry everything.

Low Row Is a quiet village and has one Pub The Punch Bowl thats only a short down hill walk. food and beer good.

We have been walking in the hills around Swaledale now normally twice a year for over 20 years. Although not cheep you certainly get good value and first class treatment. This is the best accommodation we have stayed at in the dales.

this is the second Time we have stayed at Laykin and it certainly wont be the last.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We were delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay so much at Laykin Cottage, Nell Tom's sister just a few hundred yards away downhill. I must have sent you a link to review the wrong cottage, apologies. The 2 are very similar but there is no Aga at Nell Tom in case anyone is confused.

The quality, comfort and craftsmanship has been maintained to a far better than average over the last 12 Months.

A truly delightful detached dales cottage with luxurious fixtures and an ideal base for the local and not so local area.

We fully recommend this property.

Location

From the Owner

We had the opportunity to buy Nell Tom in 2012. How could we resist? The views down the Dale are simply breathtaking, and though we knew that we would need to make many alterations to the house and garden to achieve what we wanted, we felt that it's location warranted it. We set about a total renovation in March 14 and our first guests stayed in May 2015.

Facilities

From the Owner

It is wonderful peaceful. You approach from the tiny road to Blades, and then down a private track. There are a couple of other holiday homes nearby but you will feel as if you are totally isolated as the nearest one is above us and can't really be seen from the house. You can have wonderful walks straight from the door and admire fantastic scenery, wildlife, birds, flowers. You won't be able to use your phone if you use vodafone as there is no signal in the Dale, so you can relax. Other networks are fine, and we have good wifi. There is a large enclosed garden to enjoy all the views from. The whole house will be newly renovated and built to the highest standards. It is well insulated, has underfloor heating provided by ground source. It is cosy & all the furniture & beds are new.
