About the property

Cottage in Chenac-Saint-Seurin-d'Uzet, Royan, Charente Maritime, Poitou-Charentes, France - 2 Bedrooms, Garden Setting Tranquility, Thursday Changeover But Flexible

2 Bedrooms, garden setting tranquillity, Saturdaychangeover . A charming cottage, created from antiquated farm buildings in a pretty enclosed garden with a swimming pool [shared with the owners]. Situated in a vineyard & sunflower-surrounded village overlooking the sea, near many beautiful, safe, sandy beaches: Meschers (15 mins), St Georges de Didonne (20) as well as the Atlantic rollers & dunes of the Cote Sauvage. There are little fishing ports nearby, two in walk-able distance. The area is full of wildlife & great for bird watchers. Numerous excellent restaurants cater to all tastes - the local seafood is legendary. Many of the local wine growers open their doors to visitors for tastings of cognac, pineau & wine. There are plenty of places of interest nearby, e.g. Talmont, one of the prettiest villages in France, and La Palmyre with its wonderful zoo. Cognac, Saintes, Royan & Bordeaux are all beautiful historic towns with excellent golf courses. The Medoc on the opposite side of the Gironde is easily reached by ferry from Royan. Both bedrooms have exposed beams and lots of character - one is pale yellow and the other pale peach. The double bedroom (with double bed) is reached by a spiral staircase from the ground floor. It is light and airy with windows overlooking the garden and and pool, and a large velux roof light (with blind). There is a door to the second bedroom whose window looks out over Roman tiles, and a velux roof light with blind. It has two good-size single beds. The rooms have heaters and fans, and are simply furnished in pine with wood laminate flooring. Both bedrooms have exposed beams and lots of character - one is pale yellow and the other pale peach. About Philippa Becket

My name is Philippa ,I am a retired Teacher and my husband Henry , TV writer and producer is still working here and in London. We spend our time in England in London and Hampshire . We met at Cambridge University over 40 years ago and have 4 children and 2 grandchildren . Our children spent idyllic holidays here in Chenac and they all still visit more than once a year .

Philippa Becket purchased this cottage in 1990

Why Philippa Becket chose Royan area

We were looking for a home in the centre of a village closer to the sea (at the time we had a house in Gemozac 10km away )and found this place which became our home . The area we discovered 30 years ago when our children were tiny , and we were smitten ! We still discover new things to visit even after so many years !

The cottage was the place in which our children played and had adventures . It was always our dream to restore it but keeping the main house water tight and up to date was our main priority . Then 7 years ago we took the plunge and we designed a place that we felt would be ideal for holidays and our friends to stay in .So far every body has loved staying there and having their own private garden and direct access to the pool makes it magical!

What makes this cottage unique

The place is unique and we are proud of it . It is exceptionally safe and tranquil, with a private part of the garden exclusively for the enjoyment of people renting the cottage.

An area that has plenty of interesting places

  • 3 of 5

We stayed at Philippa and her husbands property for two weeks recently, they were a very warm and friendly couple and whenever we asked about anything they were always helpful, the village was extremely quiet, which will suit a lot of people, a nice touch was leaving some wine and beer in the fridge which was very welcome.

Our holiday consisted of myself, my wife, her mother and our baby and for our situation the property was not ideal for us, the pool area is nice enough but there was very little space to sit around it. The backdoor which was our main entrance in went through the bathroom, so keeping it clean and private was very difficult, your allotted garden area is away from the Gite' and was a bit of a pain ferrying food and drinks backwards and forwards.

Inside the Gite' there was a good size kitchen/Dinning/Living room let down by a really uncomfortable tiny sofa and chairs. This led to a very noisy spiral staircase and to two good sized Bedrooms but if you have elderly people or a baby its not ideal, especially for getting up in the night for the bathroom.

So to sum up our stay, we did feel like we were staying in some ones holiday home that was more suited to family and friends rather than paying guests but there was plenty of things to do in the area and the owners were very pleasant and I am sure it would suit many peoples requirements but unfortunately not ours.

Owner's Response: This is the first time we have had anything approaching a negative review and there are several points that I would question . The first one is that the main entrance is not through the bathroom but through the cottage's front door . The cottage garden surrounds the pool outside the back door and we ask our guests not to BBQ or eat and drink around it as is customary with pool rules . I think these guests may have upset about this . The party of 3 adults of diverse ages a baby and a dog had the use of the whole garden when we were absent for half their visit and the dog was a frequent visitor to our house when we were here . We suggest in our property information that the gîte is best suited to a young family as the cottage was created with a group such as that in mind . The rattan sofa and chairs are covered in soft cushions and we have been told by previous visitors are really perfect for a holiday home . I am sorry that Jeff and his family found the property unsuitable but from the number of people who return year after year I am glad they are in a minority.

Pretty Cottage in quiet village

  • 5 of 5

Stayed in the property as a couple and it was the perfect size. It was lovely being met on arrival by the owners who live next door. As we had never visited this part of France before, it was nice to have suggestions of places to visit. Plenty of dvds and books to keep you entertained in the evenings, internet access made planning our excursions easier together with a large supply of brochures. The cottage has its own garden adjoining the owners with BBQ patio furniture and sun loungers. The property stayed lovely and cool during extremely hot weather. Although there is no air conditioning the fans worked well. The pool right outside the back door of the cottage is well looked after and we used it daily. There's a supermarket about 10 minutes drive away and a much larger one just under 20 minutes drive in Gemozac. Places worth a visit, Saintes very pretty roman town, Talmont pretty village on the Gironde Estuary and stunning sunsets, Royan for long sandy beach are all within a 30 minute drive. Lovely cottage, lovely owners, hope to visit again one day as there is so much more to be explored in the area.

Tranquil and peaceful, perfect.

  • 4 of 5

Arrived a few days later, due to illness, but this was an amazing place to recoup. Received a very warm welcome from Phillipa and had a wonderful relaxing two weeks. Nothing was too much trouble and we were made to feel very at ease, often stopping for a chat about our day or asking for advice on where to go visiting different places. It was like having our own tourist information on the doorstep. Having the pool outside the gite was the icing on the cake for our two girls, with them making full use of it from the moment they woke up till bedtime. The gite garden was separate from the main garden, so we didn't have to worry about our children disturbing anyone. The gite contained everything necessary for a comfortable and relaxing holiday. The tranquil, rural, vineyard filled surroundings made it perfect with many wonderful beaches, from quiet coves to busy seaside resorts, within close driving proximity. Definitely a place we will return to. 😊

Lovely holiday home and wonderful owners

  • 5 of 5

Philippa and Henry made us feel very welcome and were very helpful with local knowledge and places to go.

They were there on hand if we needed anything and looked after the pool and gardens beautifully.

The Gite (cottage) was very comfortable with everything we needed and we felt at home straight away, especially with Bijoux their cat popping by for tickles.

All in all a very enjoyable two weeks holiday.

Fabulous Family Holiday

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Philippa and Henry for your hospitality and for making our stay at your wonderful cottage so enjoyable! Our boys, (aged 9 and 7) loved the pool, the garden and the cat! So much for the family to see and do in the Royan area, we couldn't possibly do it all in the week so we'll have to return! The Cottage had everything we needed, very well appointed and comfortable. Very peaceful location too but so close to the beaches and activities.

Brilliant holiday

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful cottage and pool in a lovely area of France. Perfect for visiting the coast and towns like Cognac, Saintes and our favourite Pons. Philippa and her family made us really welcome and we can't recommend the local wine highly enough. Definitely didn't want to leave.
