About the property

Adjoining gites in Mauroux, Lot, Midi-Pyrenees, France - Peaceful Location, 20 Minutes Walk To Village With Shop/bakery

The property

If you are thinking about a holiday in the beautiful Lot department of France, then you might like to consider a stay in the tranquil grounds of our home, an old farmhouse (“Mas”) dating from the seventeenth century, set in 2 hectares of farm and woodland.

We offer gite-style accommodation in a converted outbuilding that has been renovated to a high standard, while retaining much of its rustic charm. The two adjoining gites both offer a well-equipped modern kitchen, a large living room opening onto a private terrace, two bedrooms and a modern bathroom. Therefore, in total you have four bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.

The gites are separate from the main house, set in a large, private, orchard garden with a swimming pool and pool deck.

The garden has plenty of space for sporty types, with bowls, badminton, table-tennis and swimming all possible, or you might just prefer to find yourself a quiet corner and relax in the sun (or shade).

The gites are adjacent to a network of rural pathways where you can walk or cycle without bumping into another soul for hours on end, and only 2 km from our local village, Mauroux . Here you will find a shop (incorporating a boulangerie and cafe) library and post-office. Our village restaurant is just outside the village centre (3 km from us).

The region

The Lot is a department with a rich history and stunning natural beauty. The previous inhabitants of the "basse vallée" (lower Lot valley) have all left their mark here: from the cave paintings of the prehistoric inhabitants, to Roman ruins, and English (and French or course!) fortified towns (called “Bastides”) from the time of the hundred years war.

Markets: in the Lot, virtually every town and village has its own market- so it's possible to visit a different colourful market every day of the week.

History: There are fascinating "chateaux", bastide towns, churches, endless unspoilt villages (including five of the “most beautiful villages in France”), and prehistoric cave paintings to explore.

The Lots also boasts five of the “grands sites” (great sites) of the Midi-pyrennees region of France: Cahors, Figeac, Ramcomadour, the Dordogne river valley, and Saint Cirq Lapopie.

Food and drink: the Cahors vineyards (of which Mauroux is a part) offer numerous opportunities for wine tasting. The region is also famous for its foie-gras, truffles, duck products, walnuts and prunes. You can find good restaurants in and near Mauroux (six or so that we would recommend within 15 minutes drive) and three michelin-starred restaurants within 45 minutes (if that's your thing).

Outdoor activities: walking, cycling, caving, rock-climbing, horse-riding, parachuting, hot-air ballooning, golf and tennis are all possible here.

Water: why not try swimming, canoeing, boating or fishing on one of the lot's many rivers, including the Lot , Cele and Dordogne? You can access the Lot river only 4km away from the gites at Lachapelle-Cabanac.

Missing the city

Only 40 minutes away from Mas des Roses, you have the impressive medieval centre of Cahors, sitting in a “loop” of the river Lot. Cahors has historic sites (including the famous Pont Valentre bridge), restaurants, shops, the theatre, cinema etc- enough to keep anyone amused on a day-trip. Forty minutes in the other direction, you have Agen, the capital of the Lot-and-Garonne.

Further afield, you can visit Toulouse (approximately 90 minutes away), with its saerospace industry, beautiful facades, lovely shops and restaurants.Or Bordeaux (2 and a half hours)away) with all the architecture, culture and great food and wine that one would expect to find in a city of world-renown.
