About the property

House in Glossa, Skopelos, Sporades Islands, Greece - Spacious And Relaxing Accommodation In Which To Enjoy Greek Village Life With All Amenities Closeby

If you’ve ever been to picturesque Glossa, you will probably know Eleni's House. Within the village, its commanding position offers some of the best views available and visitors are often found looking fondly out over the garden and rooftops to the extraordinary panorama beyond, having a Shirley Valentine moment! Eleni’s House is a charming, traditional stone house with a garden. Spacious, refurbished to a high standard and equipped to be a home-from-home, it is designed to provide an oasis of calmness and luxury. The main 43 square metre salon occupies the entire top floor together with a balcony (and, in the Sporades style, a toilet) providing outstanding 180-degree views across to the Greek mainland, Skiathos, Evia and the islands off Milia and Kastani beaches. Below is a large airy bedroom, with a dressing room on a mezzanine level in between. The modern kitchen is down a few more steps and is supplemented by a utility room with a washing machine. The bathroom is fully tiled and equipped with modern fittings and a truly huge shower area. In the west-facing garden, you can either enjoy lying on loungers under the sun umbrella or sitting under the orange and almond trees. Being in the village, there is a taverna, a café / bakery and three shops around the main square within just 2-3 minutes’ walk of the house which can provide all you could possibly need and more – seriously! – with other shops and restaurants just a little further away in other roads in Glossa. It is just 15 minutes down the hill to Glossa’s harbour – Loutraki – where there is a further range of shops and tavernas, and where the ferries and catamarans dock.

About Malcolm and Sarah Avery

We are an English couple who had our first holiday in Greece when we met 35 years ago. Looking for a seaside holiday home - UK was too expensive and France too rural - we came to Glossa for week's holiday in May 2007 and the rest, as they say, is history! Speaking practically no Greek, we found the locals to be so friendly and welcoming, and the relaxing ambiance of the place became immediately apparent. We also had discovered Eleni's House before it was shown to us by the agent, so put in an offer more or less then and there. We spent more than we intended on renovating the house but regret it not one bit. We look forward to spending more time in Glossa when we are retired but, in the meantime, we hope you have the opportunity to enjoy our charming house!

Malcolm and Sarah Avery purchased this house in 2007

Why Malcolm and Sarah Avery chose Sporades

Even when compared to the other traditional houses in Glossa, Eleni's House is different. With houses on both sides as you walk down most roads, the view is often rather constrained from street level. But, by owning the garden on the opposite side of the road, a wonderful panorama opens up as you approach Eleni's House, which is also atop a slight rise. So imagine what can be seen from the balcony two levels higher - the views are simply quite magnificent and whole days can be lost while you sit and try to take it all in!

What makes this house unique

Staying at Eleni's House you will enjoy a taste of authentic Greek village life. Be it the clip-clopping of the neighbour's donkey, delivering the latest load of grapes to be trod - yes, trod - in the house next door. Or the calling across the roof-tops and waves from others enjoying their own balconies or roof terraces. Or the funeral procession along the road beneath the balcony with an open coffin (quite a scary thing to look down on!) Or the bikes and scooters as they head to and from work in the countryside. There are three supermarkets / general shops in the immediate vicinity and some are like little time-capsules to take you back to the 1950s. The bakery / café has just opened, so you can have your bread fresh every morning from just along the road. Cares just melt away . .

Guestbook comments from the owner

Rachel, Rob & Lillie (Aged5) (Leicestershire) Aug 09: Wow! What a wonderful week we have had. Don’t want to leave this beautiful island. Eleni’s House is superb; it offers everything you could wish for. Views are breath-taking, just as described on the website. Locals are very friendly and helpful. Lots of great places to eat here in Glossa.

Mike, Katie, Chris & Megs (Scarborough) Aug 09: The villa was much more than expected – the photos don’t do it justice. We would really recommend scooters, as we saw so much more of the island.

Mary & Shirley Sept 09: What an amazing village – locals are so helpful and welcoming. Tremendous value bus-ride to Skopelos – just as good as a coach tour.

Bev & Jane (Swanage) Jul 10: Loved Eleni’s House and the amazing views from the balcony. We made the most of everything: early morning walks when cooler and bus rides to different beaches for that much-needed cooling off in the sea.

Elizabeth (Netherlands) Aug 10: Eleni’s House has been the perfect scenery for our family to rest, relax and get back to our simple selves. Life in Glossa has been truly heart-warming – every day the neighbours have brought fresh fruit, home-grown veggies and even made special soup for us. The garden is a splendid spot to chill out after a long day. We enjoyed the house very much and found it perfect for a long-stay holiday. Skopelos has conquered our hearts and the breath-taking nature will soon call us back.

Anna & Bethan (London) Sept 10: We loved the upstairs room – the amazing views and being able to watch the activity in the harbour and out to sea with the binoculars . . . an inspired addition to the house.

Liz & Babs (London) June 11: The friendliness and hospitality of the people, and their willingness to share their beautiful island – and breath-taking it is – the pine forests, the turquoise bays, etc. etc. We have barely tasted a millionth of what this sweet island has to offer . . .

Jacki & Fotini July 11: We found everything in and outside of the home to be perfect!! It is a beautiful island . . . so quiet and very green and very traditional!!

Alex & Amy (Ashburton, New Zealand) May 12: We’ve had a super week – definitely lived up to expectations and more! The island is stunning and was fun to use the car to get to some of the more remote areas such as the lighthouse and Skopelos monasteries. Swimming in the sea here is fantastic, with crystal-clear water beaches, all slightly different.

Notes on accommodation: The lower levels of Eleni’s House are cut into the hillside and only the top floor has any rear-facing doors or windows. Also built traditionally with thick stone walls, the house naturally remains at a comfortable temperature. Accordingly, there is no air conditioning but two large fans are provided to aid circulation and this has proved to be sufficient even through the hottest days. Upstairs, in particular, a breeze can be enjoyed with front and back windows open. Fireplaces in the bedroom and salon share a common chimney and this aids further the circulation of air through the property. However, the fireplaces cannot be used and no other heating is currently provided and it is for this reason that the property is rented out only during the warmer weather. Outside: Just over the lane from the front of the house is the garden, enclosed on two sides by stone walls but still enjoying views towards Skiathos. There are three orange trees, two almond trees and a pomegranate bush, and a bough of the neighbour’s lemon tree also overhangs the corner of the garden. So, there is peaceful ambiance with plenty of space for lounging in the sun or the shade, and al-fresco dining. Utility Room: Three steps from the kitchen lead down to the utility room with a washing machine, small vacuum and other cleaning equipment. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bath and beach towels are provided, along with all linen. The house is cleaned and bed linen changed mid-week at a time convenient to guests.

Authentic Greek island house with stunning views

  • 5 of 5

Friendly and helpful customer service providing a lovely welcome to the special village of Glossa. The house has been sympathetically renovated to make it a lovely holiday destination. No air con needed in this historical property that keeps cool on the hottest days, with unbelievable views of the sea and distant islands and mountains. Situated in a lovely part of the village with the added benefit of a garden across the street. I would recommend, especially as there is no WIFI or TV! Relaxing and authentic; I would like to return right now!

A lovely, spacious townhouse with magnificant view

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for 2 weeks and had a great time. The house was perfect for us, breakfast on the balcony lasted more than we planned as didn't want to move from there. The house was also so well equipped, home from home. The village itself was quiet, traditional and not too touristy- loved the village square to eat, and the walks were fantastic. Didn't realise we could still find an island so close to an airport that still retained its charm. Would highly recommend.

Owner's Response: Skopelos, and Glossa in particular, remain as two of Greece's secret gems, as Sue and Mike found. It makes all our efforts to prepare Eleni's House as a home-from-home worthwhile when our guests have a great time!

A chic and comfortable home in a charming town

  • 5 of 5

My partner and I loved Eleni's house. It is one of the best holiday lets I have ever had. The house is quirky but spacious and very comfortable and the balcony view, a heart-stopper. My dealings with the hosts were wonderfully efficient and friendly. Glossa is a little gem, and we loved exploring the island from there.

I didn't want to leave!

Eleni's House - a very special place

  • 5 of 5

We have just spent an amazing two weeks in this little corner of paradise. Eleni's House has everything you could possibly need. It is set high up in the lovely small town of Glossa with stunning views of the port and neighbouring islands. Unlike some websites the house really is like the photos! The kitchen and bathroom are well equipped, the sitting room is elegant and very comfortable as is the bedroom. We spent many hours, morning and evening, on the balcony you see in the photos just marvelling at the view. We loved Glossa and all of the island that we saw. There are some fabulous beaches, some quieter than others depending on what you are looking for. The Greeks were very friendly and welcoming. The food was excellent (far better than we remembered Greek food from 30 years ago!). Glossa is unspoilt so if you are looking for a totally relaxing holiday, somewhere with the comforts of home, but also amazing weather, lovely beaches, friendly people, look no further than Eleni's House. Malcolm and Sarah, the owners, could not have been more helpful from the moment we made our first enquiry so we felt quite familiar with things before even arriving. Tony and Karen, who live in Glossa, met us on arrival and were also very helpful during our stay. We definitely hope to return.

Owner's Response: Although we don't arrange flights, we do try to offer even more than a package holiday and can advise on all aspects of arranging your holiday - car, scooter, motorbike, quad or jeep hire, kayaking trips, best beaches, ferry and catamaran times and prices, etc. etc. A good place to start is our own website to which you'll find a link towards the bottom of the Facilities page. When you arrive on Skopelos, you'll be met by our local British agent who will arrange free transfer to Eleni's House in the heart of the village and remain on call to answer any questions or deal with any problems. We're so pleased that Charles and Camilla enjoyed themselves so much: it's what Eleni's House is all about!

Beautiful Townhouse in a stunning location

  • 5 of 5

We thought we were renting a holiday Townhouse but it felt like we had just borrowed our friends house for a week. Everything about the Townhouse had a very personal feel. The property matched the description exactly, and was clean and well maintained. The views were breath-taking as was the town of Glossa.

Flight to Skiathos was routine and so was the trip to Skopelos by Fast Cat. We were met by Tony who arranged a taxi for us to get to the accommodation as he had another couple to get to theirs. After a short time Tony came to the Townhouse to make sure everything was ok then he took us on a walking tour of the town which was a fantastic thing to do and not expected. He pointed out various shops, Tavernas and bars and helped us find our bearings. At 'beer o'clock' he bought us a drink in one the bars and really made us feel at home. We met up with Tony and his wife Karen several times and they really made our stay feel like we were part of the community. We did hire a small car (that Tony organised for us) and was a godsend. Although there was a regular bus, we liked the idea of being able to go where we liked when we liked. As much as we like beaches, and there are many beautiful ones very near to Glossa, we didn't want to spend too long in the sun so the car was ideal for short beach hops. Our favourite was the one you could see to the left from the balcony - reachable down a narrow dusty track but well worth it.

Anyway, enough of this, it is making me pine for the tranquillity of Glossa again.

Finally, the communication with Tony and Karen prior to our visit and with the owners Malcolm and Sarah could not be faulted.

We could not fault anything with the whole experience and we WILL be back.

Thank you so much for sharing your home.

Owner's Response: It's our only objective for guests to feel at home and able to relax, as Mark and Suzanne clearly did, as well as explore beautiful Glossa and Skopelos. By having our friends Tony and Karen living permanently in Glossa and able to act as our agents, we seek to provide as comprehensive a service as we can - clearly the system works! PS. The beach referred to is called Armenopetra which can be seen in the website picture called 'View South from the Balcony'. Other beaches Kastani, Milia and Panormos (our favourite) are just beyond that, but the nearest one is at Loutraki to which you can walk.

Greek Island Bliss!

  • 5 of 5

Eleni's House is simply beautiful, with what must be some of the best views in Greece (well, certainly Skopelos!).

My then-girlfriend and I stayed there for two weeks, during which time we used the excellent bus service (we didn't hire a car) to travel around the island, mostly to the various beaches, but also to Skopelos Town.

We loved Panourmos beach, as it offers the best swimming and sun loungers, as well as space and bars / cafes. (Although I hear the island has changed a lot since we were there - in a good way!)

One of the best things we did was a boat trip from Skopelos Town to an island the name of which I've forgotten, but we had dolphins swimming alongside the boat for ages, which was simply brilliant. The boat played Abba non-stop, which drove me demented, but luckily there were no speakers on the deck - just remember your factor fifty!

As I said, Eleni's House itself is amazing, a real home from home. Having breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the balcony with that view never gets old - we were out there every single morning and evening of our stay. Even if we went out for dinner we would go onto the balcony for a drink or just to watch the ferries and boats sail past.

I don't really know why you're still reading this review. Just book it and go and see for yourself! PS - the photos don't do it justice, the house is even nicer than they let on!

The closest beach is at Loutraki which has a few tavern / cafes and is a 10-minute drive or easy 20-minute walk downhill. Within 20 minutes' drive, you can reach western beaches at Armenopetra, Elios, Kastani, Milia and Panormos. Buses run along this route to Skopelos every 2 hours in high season. Glossa enjoys a unique position between both sides of the island and the famous "Mamma Mia!" church of Aghios Ioannis on the east coast with its beach is only 15 minutes drive away.

The normal route is to fly to the neighbouring island of Skiathos. From the airport it is a short taxi ride (€7 - 2014) to the port. From there, catamarans (20 minutes) and ferries (40 minutes) cross regularly to Loutraki, which is Glossa's harbour. Other routes are: via Thessaloniki, bus to Volos and ferry/catamaran from there; or via Athens, bus either to Aghios Constantinos or Volos, and onward ferries. Our English agent will always meet guests at Loutraki and take them to the house.

Further Details:

It is not necessary to hire a car when visiting Eleni's House, particularly in high season when there are plenty of buses available. Glossa should be able to meet all your needs. Should guests wish to hire a car, particularly to explore the more isolated beaches, suitable companies can be recommended which will deliver the car to Glossa. Alternatively, motor bikes, scooters and quad bikes are available for the relatively short distances involved.
