About Shirley Marsh

We moved to Devon in 1977 and brought up our two children. We started off in Dartmouth and then found this lovely barn. We really try to meet all our guests needs and are happy to give helpful advice on placing to visit and love meeting lots of people. We both work in the tourist trade, Shirley works in local hotel as a Therapist and Terry launches and recovers boats in the Salcombe estuary, although very shortly we will be retiring.

Shirley Marsh purchased this cottage in 1987

Why Shirley Marsh chose South Hams

We love this rural location with its rolling hills and love sitting in the garden watching the Buzzards up in the thermals, foxes creeping across the fields and often you can see deer in hills. We love the fact that of a night time there is no light pollution so the stars are magnificent and our guest often comment on the wonder of the stars and they often can be seen sitting on the decking with a glass of wine, stargazing.

Property dates back to 1550 and has an old world charm with beautiful views over the rolling hills. Is on a spit of land so there is a choice of beaches of your choice either shingle or sand. Extremely peaceful and tranquil

What makes this cottage unique

Old world charm dating back to 1550

Guestbook comments from the owner

There is a feed back book available to read in cottage. Everyone loves the use of the conservatory and nearness of beaches and still retaining its peaceful location,

not overloaded with tourists in immediate location. Love the local coastal walks with affordable cafes positioned along the path on route.

Beautiful and peaceful getaway

  • 5 of 5

A perfect property for a relaxing break. Shirley is a wonderful host and was there to welcome us with a delicious cream tea. The countryside views from the property are stunning and inside has everything you need to make this a home from home. Stayed here with our 2 teenage daughters and despite the lack of mobile phone signal and ad hoc wifi, they loved the property and didn't want to leave! Ideally located for exploring the surrounding coastline and towns of Dartmouth, Kingsbridge and Salcombe. Definitely hope to return. Thank you Shirley.

Very pretty accommodation in stunning surroundings

  • 3 of 5

Very nice welcome with cream tea. Hosts very pleasant. Property nice and clean. Most rooms were good sizes including the bedrooms but bathroom is very small and is also downstairs. The bedrooms are both a good size but the mattress in the master room was very firm, which would not suit everyone. This is a Self Catering let - you need to bring your own Tea, Coffe & Sugar etc, as well as food. The living room and kitchen are comfortable and well appointed. The conservatory is lovely. You can only get wifi in the conservatory, though our son was able to get it on his laptop in the twin room. The staircase might prove difficult for people with mobility problems or very small children. You can't get a reliable phone signal while on the property - which didn't worry us, but some may not be happy with that. The road up to the property is single track with no way of seeing what is coming - this is not for the feint hearted. Would recommend this property for active families or friends or couples. It is very quiet and secluded and within reasonable driving distance to plenty of interesting and beautiful places.

Extremely pretty and well equipped cottage in quiet location but great base for exploring area.

  • 5 of 5

Welcomed with a Devon cream tea, Shirley was a delightful host with useful tips. Cottage is very comfortable for four and really well equipped. The full length conservatory is a real feature and makes for much greater living space than one would expect. Quiet location but a good base for the stretch between Salcombe and Dartmouth with its historic houses and glorious beaches. The approach is through quite a long narrow lane with limited passing places, didn't bother me but might be useful to be aware.
