Cottage in Saint Saud Lacoussiere, Dordogne, Aquitaine, France - Peaceful Haven for Nature Lovers, Close to Local Amenities

Le Moulin has its own lake and stream and is surrounded by woodland so we are in the middle of nature which is perfect for the fauna and flora; we are in a noted area for a large range of orchid species as well as many other beautiful rare plants and the sound of the hoopoe, king fisher and golden oriole is common while lazing in the garden.

About Valerie Povey

We are the Povey family - Mike and Val and our 5 year old daughter, Claudia.

We moved to France over 9 years ago in search of a new way of life. We believe in trying to be as self sufficient as practically possible, so have fresh produce from our potager for nearly all of the year and fresh eggs from our free range chickens. We also feel strongly about renewable energy sources, so our hot water is heated by solar and during the winter our heating and cooking system is fired by wood which is all managed on the property. As a last resort, we will use electric when the sun doesn't shine - so there is never a shortage of hot water !

Why Valerie Povey chose Saint-Saud-Lacoussière

After some time of searching for our dream home, we fell in love with the charm of Le Moulin de Mazieras and the surrounding area. We were searching for a tranquil location but not isolated and wanted to be close enough to a typical French village with shops and amenities. The countryside is beautiful and unspoilt and we are lucky enough to see flora and fauna here that has now become rare, if not almost extinct, in the UK.

What makes this cottage unique

You can enjoy the peace and quiet here, where most of the time all you can hear is nature; the birds and the stream and sometimes the church bells. We are surrounded by woodland and it feels like you are in the middle of nowhere, yet with the reassurance that within minutes you can be in a bar or restaurant catching up on daily French life, while enjoying a coffee and croissant.

Notes on accommodation: The owners are on hand for any questions, but your privacy is respected at all times. Pets may be accepted but only by prior agreement with the owners. This is a non smoking property. Outside: The property is attached to the owners property and situated within ten acres of private pasture and woodland. The cottage has its own private garden with table and chairs, BBQ, sun loungers, but we invite people to enjoy the rest of the garden. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The use of bed linen and bath towels are included in the booking. The property is cleaned and towels/linen changed weekly.

Perfect peace in beautiful surroundings

We had a wonderful 3 weeks here. The cottage is perfect. Very well equipped, spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The garden is beautiful. Three separate areas to sit and relax. We enjoyed most of our meals outside. Val, Mike and Claudia were very friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed exploring this beautiful area. Lovely quiet roads to cycle, beautiful villages and towns to visit and the lake to cool off in when it was too hot to cycle! Highly recommended!

A wonderful character cottage

The cottage was absolutely lovely first class.decorated to a high standard and very comfortable and homely. Well we did stay 3 weeks!!

We would definitely recommend this accommodation to other people.

It is far better in reality than the pictures would have you believe.

Although in a rural Setting there is more than enough locally to keep you occupied.

Claudia Mike and vals daughter is such a wonderful child it was a real pleasure to meet her. Great hosts and we look forward to returning in the future

Peace and quiet

The property was perfect for a couple and dog, plenty of room, good equipment, the welcome was warm and genuine, good walking in the area and very central for lots of chateau visiting, markets and historic towns. Off the beaten track no road noise but only a short walk to restaurant and bar.

Amazing time in picturesque cottage

It was a truly French dream. Lovely cottage surrounded by the woodlands, little stream and lake too! All to perfect to describe. First question you will ask yourself when you'll get there will be: "how did they even find did, places like this don't exist"! But they do and you will find it all when staying with Val, Mike and Claudia.

Our hosts were so friendly and accommodating that I would need to write a book to put it all in words. Some hotels should send their staff for training there, I'm sure Claudia would teach them lesson or two! It was a great pleasure to be staying with you guys and we hope to see you soon again.

Beautiful cottage in peaceful surroundings

The cottage was an absolute pleasure to stay in. It was immaculate and everything you could possibly need was provided. As soon as you stepped outside you were surrounded by peace and quiet but the village of St Saud Lacoussiere was only 20 mins walk away. Our hosts Mike and Val couldn't have been more helpful but never intrusive. We had a fabulous holiday, would definitely return and highly recommend this cottage.

Limoges airport is 54 kilometres. A car is recommended. 531 kilometres to Caen.


Nearest village (St Saud Lacoussiere) 3 kms, nearest town (Nontron) 15 kms, nearest city (Perigueux) 50 kms. 50kms to Limoges and Angouleme. 20 kms to Villars caves. 30 kms to Brantome.

Further Details:

The lake at St Saud has a beach with sunny and shady areas, picnic tables, life guard (in July and August) and cafe/restaurant. There is also a tennis court, horse riding and fishing facilities close by. A circular walk passes by the property which links to the Grand Randonees of France. The area offers excellent opportunities for keen cycling/mountain biking enthusiasts.

Booking Notes:
Please phone or email to confirm the availability of your required dates. 25% deposit (non-returnable) will be required at booking with the balance due 8 weeks prior to arrival.

Changeover Day:
Saturdays preferred, but other days by arrangement. Short stays by arrangement. The property will be available from 4pm and we ask that guests depart by 10 am.

Notes on prices:
The price includes the use of all bath towels, bed linen, tea towels, gas, water, electricity & WiFi. Our prices are per week Saturday – Saturday but arrangements can be made with the owners for shorter stays, or long term lets.

During the winter months (November - April) there will be an additional charge of £20 per week to cover heating costs. There is an optional charge of £20 per week during the months of October and May if additional heating is required.

There is a charge of £25 per pet.

Security Deposit:
A security deposit of £150 is required on arrival at the property. (refundable on departure)
