Little Hanger is set on the side of Porlock Hill within grounds of about 5 acres of wooded hillside. There are many paths to explore and wonderful views across Porlock bay. In the Spring and early Summer the grounds are ablaze with colour from bluebells, azaleas, camellias, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, primroses and cyclamen. Porlock is a living village 12 months of the year,with a choice of shops, we boast two small supermarkets, a butcher, cheese shop, pharmacy, hardware store, Post Office, two art galleries, antique shop and ladies clothes, garage and numerous gift and sweet shops. For those who do not wish to cook there are at least a dozen places to eat, from breakfast to dinner in two pubs, various restaurants, tea rooms and hotels - at prices to suit all pockets. Porlock, situated “twixt moor and sea” is the ideal base for exploring the beautiful Exmoor National Park whether by foot, bike or car. Exmoor has something to offer everyone, from wild animals and birds, spectacular views, archaeology and vernacular architecture to steam trains, walks, rural museums and National Trust properties. All are within easy reach of Porlock. Taunton and Barnstable are only 45 minutes away whilst Exeter can be reached in about an hour and a 1/4. Taunton is our nearest mainline train station and motorway access (M5). Local transport is quite good with regular buses from Porlock out to Minehead and Taunton, Lynmouth, Lynton and Barnstable. Mine head is the nearest town with services and is only a 10 minute drive away. There are many pretty villages to explore. Close by are the National Trust owned chocolate box villages of Selworthy and Bossington with lime washed thatch cottages, village greens and a lovely church at Selworthy. Further afield is the village of Dunster with its medieval Yarn Market, working water mill, tea rooms and castle which dominates the village.

Activity and Interests


Porlock Bay is a long pebble beach which stretches from Bossington, a beautiful National Trust village in the East, to Porlock Weir in the West. There is a path to Porlock Weir which starts at our bottom gate and runs through the woods. It takes about 40 minutes to walk it. Bossington and the Weir can be reached by car in about 5 minutes. The closest sandy beach is in Minehead, 15 minutes by car.


Nearest airports are Bristol and Exeter both about 90minute drive.

Nearest main line stations are Taunton and Bridgewater both about 50 minutes drive.


It is a 5 minute walk to the nearest pub in Porlock, The Ship Inn. Very friendly.

Tea rooms, restaurants and pubs in the village all welcome children and most welcome dogs too. We are at the heart of Exmoor National Park with all it's beautiful walks and interesting sights. National Trust Properties such as Dunster Castle, Watersmeet, Arlington and Knightshayes are all an easy drive.

Further Details:

The village of Porlock boasts 2 supermarkets, a butchers and cheese shop. There are numerous other shops selling clothing, gifts and art. There are 3 pubs, 3 restaurants, 4 tea rooms and other places within a very short drive. No need to cook at all, some even open for breakfast. There is a Post Office and an ATM.

Booking enquiries should be made by email or phone. A 30% deposit is required to confirm the booking. The balance payable 6 weeks prior to the start of the holiday. We accept cheques, card or bank transfers.

Changeover Day:
Usual day is Friday but the may be waived if it does not clash with another booking.

Notes on prices:
Dogs incur an additional charge of £20.
Out of season 3 night short breaks are 65% of weekly price. For 4/5 nights add 1/7 of weekly price for each additional night.
In season short breaks may be available but only at short notice. Please contact the owner.

  • Notes on accommodation: Little Hanger is a cottage converted from the old coach house at Hartshanger, our home. The entrance is up one flight of stone steps but once up, the property is on a level with the garden at the back. This is a small private terrace and lawn area but with access to the rest of the 5 acres of grounds and tennis court.We have a small friendly dog and one large or two small well behaved would be welcomed. However, they should not be allowed past the living area and in the bedrooms. The laundry room down stairs is shared with another property. Outside: We have just under 5 acres of garden and woodland. Beautiful in the Spring with rhododendrons , azaleas and camellias. There is an all weather tennis court shared with one other property. We will lend racquets and balls to anyone who does not have their own. There is parking for 2 cars or more if needed, well off the road. You can sit in the main garden and enjoy the wonderful views across Porlock Vale and the sea towards Wales. Utility Room: Washing machine, tumble drier and freezer in converted tack room below kitchen. Stacked free logs for wood burner. Drying rack inside and washing line outside in stable yard. Room to store bicycles with wash down area outside. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All linen and towels included. Other: Entrance lobby with coat hooks, boot storage and oak dresser.
