About Discover Scotland

We purchased Laghead Cottage over 20 years ago as a holiday home for family and friends. We were then a family whose work caused us to move every 2-3 years, all over the World; so when we came back to the UK for holidays, or between moves, the cottage became the one constant in the lives of our small children. It was indeed our UK home for years and our son and daughter, now both twenty something, can’t remember there being a time without this gem of a cottage, with its many fond memories, be they of happy times in Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter. We still stay in our cottage whenever we can; and we particularly love it in Winter where, after a bracing day out on the hills or down on the coast, we light the fire, pour a drink and settle down for a cosy evening in. Please note that all enquiries will be directed to our local agent - 'Discover Scotland' - who will handle any subsequent bookings; and if you do choose to visit, then we do hope that you will enjoy Laghead Cottage as much as we have over the years.

It is a simply wonderful location for a peaceful holiday, offering seclusion, but not total isolation. Yet there are many activities and attractions nearby for both adults and children.

What makes this cottage unique

Laghead Cottage is a gem, in a superb hillside position, with beautiful views over the valley to the sea; and for all ages and types of holidaymaker there is much to do and see. Alternatively, just sit on the patio – looking, listening and relaxing.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This is one of the most well-equipped holiday cottage that I have ever stayed in. There is everything from an apron…. to a hairdryer …….to even a chamber pot (although I did not need the latter!). The kitchen has every type of crockery, pot and cutlery imaginable. The cottage is also well stocked with books, board games and there is a DVD player for your entertainment.

On a clear day the views from the cottage of the surrounding Galloway Hills and Wigtown Bay are absolutely stunning. On a clear night it is a fantastic location to enjoy the thousands of stars, planets and the Milky Way - all visible with the naked eye.

It was lovely arriving at the cottage, after a long car journey, to find a tray of cups, with jars of tea and coffee, fresh milk in the fridge and a deliciously, scrumptious cake. This was a lovely thought.

There are plenty activities to do in this part of South West Scotland. One day we played tennis at the lovely well-maintained tennis courts at Gatehouse of Fleet. My daughter went horse riding at Lochview Riding Centre near Ringford. We went to the Tongland Golf Range and even went to the cinema at the Catstrand Arts Centre in New Galloway.

We found the restaurants and hotels that we visited in the area to be of a high standard. We ate in the Fisherman’s Restaurant in Carsluith, the Masonic Arms in Gatehouse and the Arden House in Kirkcudbright.

We had a lovely holiday at Laghead Cottage and I would definitely recommend it to friends and family.

For anyone looking for a for a quiet relaxing holiday in a really well appointed holiday house in the solitude of the Galloway hills with beautiful views to the hills and to the sea, this house has it all.

First class management service, clean and well-maintained, cosy and fully equipped with all the add-ons one requires for comfort and enjoyment.

Superb scenery, relaxing or invigorating walks and easy access to the sea all combine to provide an immensely enjoyable holiday.

Definitely to be recommended.

Owner's Response: We are so pleased with this, our first review, which recognizes Laghead Cottage's superb location and views, together with the hard work of our local booking agents, Discover Scotland; and also that of our terrific caretaker team of Jan and Jon who maintain and prepare the cottage so well for the arrival of our guests. We think that this cosy cottage is a real gem and hope that others will choose to discover it too.
