Perfect cosy country retreat
Rod & Ann
About the Owner
About Rod Shaw
Ann and I have owned the cottage since 1987.
We have been married since 1978 and this was our first home. We both work locally and enjoy our spare time tending the large garden.
We have always lived in the area and appreciate the beauty of the Cotswolds. We have four grown up children who were brought up here and love the peace and quiet of the countryside. Our Shetland pony lives in our field next to the cottages and we are keen on encouraging wildlife, deer, rabbits, badgers, foxes and pheasants who all arrive for feeding at different times of the day. One of our joys is to watch the herons, kingfishers and dippers amongst others that come to feed in the brook running through the garden. My hobbies include hand printing with antique letterpress machines and walking Evie our lurcher.
Rod Shaw purchased this cottage in 1987
Why Rod Shaw chose Stroud district
We bought the property in 1987 but had already been living in the row since 1978.
We love the area because it was secluded, quiet and full of wildlife. It was only half an hours walk from Stroud and 10 minutes from the local pub. There had been an old Woollen Mill on the site called Vatch Mills until 1900 and the area is steeped with history.
What makes this cottage unique
The property has walls almost 2ft thick when warm these walls hold in the heat in winter and keep the place cool in the summer. There is always wildlife around if not in the garden or our field then it is trout jumping in the stream or the Heron making a slow flight down the meadow. Of course the badgers are never late for their supper.

Perfect cosy country retreat
My partner and I wanted to escape London to this area of the Cotswolds for a week and Rod and Ann's cottage fitted the bill perfectly. Rod was very welcoming on arrival and helpful throughout our stay. The cottage is lovely - cosy, well-appointed and equipped with the most lovely open fire and candles - perfect for cosy nights in. The beautiful Slad Valley is literally on your doorstep so you can stride out from the cottage. The cottage is within easy walking distance of beautiful Slad (with the great Woolpack pub) and a great base to drive to some of the other many lovely villages and pubs in the area. Our time at the cottage was the perfect tonic and we will definitely be back. Thank you Rod and Ann.
Cosy country cottage - the perfect escape
My partner and I wanted to escape London for the week and retreat to this area of the Cotswolds. Rod (who was very welcoming/helpful on our arrival and during our stay) and Ann's lovely cottage fitted the bill perfectly. Lovely rural and peaceful setting in the beautiful Slad valley (perfect for great walks from your front door). The cottage is really well furnished and equipped and has a beautiful open fire - perfect for cosy nights in. The cottage is within easy walking distance of lovely Slad (with the great Woolpack pub) but also a good base for visiting some of the other many other lovely local villages and pubs. We will most definitely be back.
Amazing experience; can't wait to go back
Rod and Ann have something quite unique and special with their lovely cottage. The place is beautiful inside and out. We were fortunate enough to have spent the most time here out of all places along our trip and couldn't have been happier. From the welcome basket of fresh scones to the tastefully decorated bedrooms, this place was pure heaven and a welcome retreat for all 5 of us. Rod and Ann were warm and welcoming hosts, going above and beyond to be helpful and make our stay enjoyable. The cottage was impeccably clean and thoughtfully stocked with all the essential amenities you would need. Above all else, we enjoyed our time getting to know Rod, Ann and Evie, along with the gorgeous countryside.
One of the best self catering experiences ever
Four days with 3 adults and two 10 yr olds with bad weather forecast. The cottage was exceptionally well appointed and spacious and above all WARM. Ideally situated, easy parking and walks from the doorstep. Spent 3 half days at Rush Skate in Brimscombe with the scooterboy and an afternoons riding with the horsegirl at Barton End as well as walking part of the Laurie Lee trail. Minor problem with folding bed sorted immediately by Rod, charming man who takes a pride in his cottage. Highlight for me was the automatic toaster, absolutely awesome, (OK I don't get out much). Everyone gave the place the big thumbs up.
Shhh! dont tell anyone....
Choosing a holiday cottage is always a bit of a gamble, but we got lucky with this one. The photos made the place look ideal, and the reality exceeded expectations. We stayed for Christmas and New Year and found the cottage with a Christmas wreath on the gate, fairylights around the front door and a beautiful twinkling Christmas tree in the warm and cosy lounge. The stress of a everyday life immediately began to dissipate as we relaxed into our ready made, perfect Christmas retreat. The attention to detail in the decoration and the meticulous cleanliness meant we felt at home immediately. Topped off by the stunning Cotswolds landscapes has made this holiday one I would want to repeat.
when my partner couldnt start his bike the day we had to leave, Rod was on hand with tools, tea and info, so that we were able to make the repairs needed and get on our way.
dont tell anybody!
when word gets out as to whats on offer at what price, Rod and Ann will be booked up solid, and we'll never get to stay again!
I fully endorse all the comments in the other reviews and can't think of any better ways to say it.
Everything was perfect – the darling cottage, the garden, the countryside – even the weather cooperated! And so welcoming – the personalised greeting, the basket of food, the fresh flowers – all touches much appreciated. The house is lovely, tastefully finished, very well equipped, and spotlessly clean. We immediately felt at home there. The pretty English country garden was a lovely spot to sit and have breakfast. The beds are comfy and the bathrooms a treat.
Ron and Ann were the perfect hosts and being next door they are close at hand (but unobstrusive) if you should need anything, which we didn’t but we had some nice chats and learned about the neighbourhood from them.
The house is well situated for visiting the wonderful Cotswolds towns and countryside. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the peace and natural beauty of the countryside.
