Historic country house set in beautiful, spacious gardens.

Overview

Property

Country House with large garden in Burford Near Tenbury Wells / Ludlow / Bridgnorth Great / Malvern - Perfect rural retreat for families, friends and events. Sleeps 11-15

The Space

The oldest parts of the house date back to the Tudor period, with most of the present house dating to the late 1800s. The house is full of character with wooden beams, carved wooden mantelpieces, antique furniture and even a nineteenth century grand piano.

Upstairs there are six bedrooms: three doubles, one triple, one twin room, and one children’s room with two small single beds. Two of the double rooms are ensuite and there is a shared bathroom for the other rooms.

Downstairs there is a large kitchen and breakfast room, an elegant drawing room and cosy sitting room, a dining room to seat up to 12, and a conservatory.

The large garden is a wonderful space for children or adults to walk or run around, play croquet, football, badminton or boules (equipment provided), or just lie on the lawn and read a book. Tennis is also possible on local courts 1mile away in Tenbury Wells (2 racquets and balls provided).

The Old Rectory is perfect at any time of year. Spring is a lovely time to wander round the garden and enjoy the daffodils and bluebells. In Summer, enjoy a picnic or barbecue (parasol available) and get the croquet set out. In Autumn you can pick damsons and apples from our trees or go blackberry-picking in the nearby hedgerows. In Winter enjoy the log fires and walks directly from the doorstep, or cook up a storm in our well-equipped kitchen. Even when it’s raining you have plenty to keep you busy including board games, jigsaws, and a 4’6” pool table.

Guest Access

Guests have access to all areas of the house and garden.

About the Owner

Justin, Rupert, and Patrick Williams grew up in the Old Rectory Burford and love the house very much. We don't live in the area any more but we don’t want to sell this wonderful house! Instead we’ve decided to share it with guests to cover our costs, and allow us to come back every so often. We hope you enjoy the house as much as we do.

An ideal place for a family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We (7 adults, 5 children; 3 generations) had a wonderful family holiday at The Old Rectory. We loved the house, which is full of character & just about everything else you could want, & the huge & lovely garden. There was so much to do there & nearby that we didn't venture far afield (apart from a day in Ludlow, which is well worth a visit). Tenbury (which is a lovely little place - we can particularly recommend the Spotty Dog cafe!) is just a walk across the fields away, & has among many other useful shops a Spar open 7 days a week, so no problems when we ran low on supplies. The weather was good the whole week, & we all enjoyed our stay very much & would certainly love to return.

Beautiful, homely house in a lovely setting

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at the Old Rectory with my (extended!) family for a week. Booking was straightforward and the owners extremely polite and helpful. It is a lovely old house with a wonderfully homely feel, clean and well equipped with everything you could possibly need. Despite there being 12 of us in the house, there was enough room that we never felt on top of each other and plenty of room to eat in either the dining room or the conservatory. The house has indoor and outdoor games and loads of books. There is plenty to do nearby. Tenbury Wells is an easy walk away across the fields and has all the shops and cafes you are likely to need (a strong recommendation here for the Spotty Dog tea rooms!). The river Teme is less than 5 minutes walk and great for paddling (or, if you are brave, swimming). Burford House Gardens across the road are well worth a walk round (and free) and that is all without getting into a car! We had a really great stay and would love to come back to the Old Rectory again. Almost a shame the weather was so nice we had no excuse to use the impressive fire place...

Quiet retreat

  • 5 of 5

We shared a family holiday together (adults and children) in the Old Rectory

It was a wonderful stay: the children enjoyed all the games and toys, and the huge garden outside.

The adults gathered in the conservatory or outside every evening following days filles with visiting in the areas close and further afield.

Close by, the little town of Tenbury Wells was a short walk away through public footpaths and the neighboring church, estate and gardens were wonderful to visit.

Everything that was needed was available in the house, and both the owners and caretaker were helpful.

Altogether a wonderful holiday!

Beautiful house set in stunning gardens.

  • 5 of 5

I booked the Old Rectory for a family reunion in July.

The house and gardens offered everything we needed for our short break. The house felt as though the owners had just popped out and had a lovely lived in feel which is often missing from holiday rentals.

There was an abundance of games, sports equipment, wellies and anything else we could possibly have wanted whilst staying there!

The owners and caretakers were welcoming and helpful which added to the feeling of the house being a home from home.

I would definitely recommend the Old Rectory for a large gathering and hope to return in the future.

Many thanks.

Great house in Beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

What we loved most about this house was that it hadn't been modernised to beyond recognition of its original family home. We loved all the old touches of the record player and board games. The fires in each room down stairs were also a lovely touch. It felt like we had been invited into someones home rather than a sterile hotel.

The gardens and surrounding area are beautiful and perfect for hours of exploring.

We would highly recommend a stay at this house.

Lovely big house - perfect for a family gathering

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at The Old Rectory was great. We were a large family party of 10 (3 generations) and the house more than accommodated us all with space to spare. The six bedrooms were all generously sized with lots of bathrooms to go around. We particularly loved the sitting room with the open fire for evenings and dining room for evening meals, but the sunny conservatory was the favourite room in the house. We also got the snooker table up and running which kept people entertained. The gardens are immaculately kept and were full of spring flowers when we stayed there over Easter. The Burford Garden Stores garden centre next door has a playground which the children enjoyed visiting and there are lots of lovely pubs in the area. It was brilliant for a larger group wanting to enjoy a lovely country house with lots of space and facilities.

The Neighbourhood

The Old Rectory is situated in a beautiful corner of British countryside. There are very nice walks that can be had from the doorstep: you can walk across fields along a footpath to the local market town Tenbury Wells (1mile), picnic by the river teme a few hundred metres from the house, or do great circular walks along country lanes and well trodden footpaths. Details of these are all in our welcome pack and there are lots of maps and wellies (inc. children's!).

Just over the road is Burford House Garden Store, set in the grounds of an early Georgian mansion on the banks of the River Teme, with 7 acres of gardens, a café and a charming shop selling country house furnishings.

Also just next door is St Mary’s Burford, an ornate 14th century, Grade I listed church. The church was extensively restored in 1889-90 by Sir Aston Webb, the architect of the V&A museum and the main facade of Buckingham Palace.

Tenbury Wells, 1 mile away, is an attractive small former spa town which is a pleasant place to wander round for an hour or so and buy any provisions you need for your stay. There are a range of independent shops including two bakeries, two greengrocers, a butcher, a fishmonger, and two small supermarkets. It is also randomly the ‘mistletoe capital of the UK’!

The gourmet’s paradise of Ludlow is just 15 minutes’ drive away. With a medieval castle, independent shops, frequent food and antique markets and fine restaurants, Ludlow is not to be missed.

National Trust and English Heritage have some fantastic properties locally including the Georgian villa of Berrington Hall with its Capability Brown gardens, the remains of the palatial 19th century mansion of Witley Court; Croft Castle, Stokesay Castle, Brockhampton estate and more. The Severn Valley steam railway and Bewdley Safari Park are also very popular.

The cathedral cities of Worcester and Hereford are a 40 minute drive away and the historic market town of Shrewsbury is an hour.
