Overview

About the property

Cottage in Maentwrog, Ffestiniog, Snowdonia National Park, North Wales - Peaceful Location With Beaches And Facilities Nearby, 2 Pubs In Walking Distance

Once a tavern,Tafarn Trip is a listed stone cottage built around 1630 with thick walls, beamed ceilings, a slate floor, a huge inglenook with a bread oven, and a turned stone staircase. Upstairs there are original post and panel partitions and wooden floors with some original irregular floorboards. The cottage is beside a pretty lake with a rowing boat for guests' use and there are miles of woodland walks from the front door. The woods are home to a multitude of wildlife including owls, woodpeckers, pied flycatchers, buzzards, nuthatches, ospreys, rare bats and elusive wild goats. Mountain walks start just a few minutes away in the Moelwyn range. The beginnings of various routes up Snowdon are 30 minutes by car. The huge sandy beach at Harlech, with its castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site; the secluded coves of Borth y Gest; and the fine swimming beach at Criccieth; are a short 20 min drive away. Two pubs, which serve food, are within walking distance (10 min) and shops only 8 mins drive. Fine dining is to be found at Portmeirion and Harlech, details in our welcome pack. A swimming lake is a few minutes walk along forest tracks, a good place to cool off on hot days. There are pretty gardens at Plas Tan y Bwlch, a short walk through the woods; at Plas Brondanw, home to Clough Williams-Ellis, near Llanfrothen; and at Portmeirion with its Italianate village designed by Clough Williams-Ellis. Above the lake the Ffestiniog steam railway makes its way, visible from the cottage garden. It is a short walk to Tan y Bwlch station. Catch trains from here to Blaenau Ffestiniog or Porthmadog. From Porthmadog the Welsh Highland steam Railway follows a scenic mountain route to Caernarfon. There is plenty of opportunity for fishing and golf nearby.

The cottage has been carefully restored with attention to period features. The kitchen/dining room is equipped with a fridge including a small freezer, modern gas cooker and microwave. It is furnished with freestanding pine units, an antique marble topped sideboard, a Victorian pine dresser and a table and 6 chairs. High chair on request. The lounge is comfortably furnished with a 2 seater sofa and 2 easy chairs. A window seat and a Georgian pine settle provide further seating. The multi fuel log burner adds to the warm feeling. A parcel of logs is provided and further logs can be purchased locally at additional cost. There is a radio/CD player but no TV or reception for TV; however we do have a TV license. Downstairs there is a walk in shower and toilet next to a utility room. Upstairs are two double bedrooms and a long room with a single bed which connects them and the bathroom. The single bed may be used if we are notified in advance. A cot is available. Bed linen and towels are provided each week. Beach towels are available, on request, at extra cost. Please state when booking.

On the other side of the driveway to our neighbours' houses is a wildflower meadow leading to the lake. There is an outside storage area for mountain bikes.

Because of the proximity of the lake and the drive, the property is only suitable for children over 10 or babes in arms.

Parking is available on the side of the road opposite.

Central heating and electricity are included in the price as is free WiFi and free telephone calls to UK landlines.

The cottage can sleep a maximum of 4 adults plus a babe in arms and a child over 10.

No pets or smoking, sorry.

About John Waite

We bought this cottage in 1991. Over the years since then we have gradually restored the inside, using traditional methods.

Now it looks much as it did when it was built in 1630, except, of course, the addition of running water, electricity, WiFi, telephone and central heating!

We love this location with the acres of ancient oak woods and we have fun rowing on the lake. You can walk for miles without crossing any road.

We hope you will enjoy it too.

Lovely old stone cottage

  • 5 of 5

Loved our stay at Tafarn Trip, the cottage was exactly as we had hoped for, full of charm and character set in an idilic lakeside location, with woodland walks and the sound of the steam train passing through during the day, loved it.

Gorgeous cottage

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful cottage on Llyn Mair. Local woodland walks ending in pub or cake. Fabulous little boat to explore the lake. We took a laptop to watch films in the evening as property doesn't have a TV. If you're a purist you won't need one.

Fantastic cottage in a peaceful location.

  • 5 of 5

Some traffic on road and visitors to next door neighbours, but nothing to detract from the overall peaceful atmosphere. Lots of original features in the cottage - it is one to be experienced. Well equipped and exactly as described. For some reason I cannot find it on Owners Direct now and have not been able to find out how we could book it again.

Pretty cottage with lots of character

  • 3 of 5

Contact with the owner and directions to the property were good, and we certainly appreciated the period features within (beware if you are taller than 5.8, the beams will hurt!). Location as a base for exploring this part of Wales was excellent. Neighbour in charge was very welcoming, loved the Welsh cakes/wine. The lake was beautiful and the children certainly made the most of your little boat, very Swallows and Amazons. Some beautiful beaches, river walks and mountain trails all within easy reach. Great quality Bose radio and flawless WiFi.

However, we felt misled by the list of facilities on the Owners Direct website, which clearly stated that the house had TV and toys/games. Our 2 children, 7 & 9, were very disappointed, especially when the typical Welsh rain kicked in. No children's books on the shelf, a bag of marbles and 2 versions of Canasta and some jigsaws that we couldn't start because we needed the one table to eat from. To be fair there was a Swingball set in the shed, but that's not so good for indoors.

We would have liked a coffee table in the lounge for cups of tea/papers or puzzles to be attempted on. Also would like to suggest that the bed orientation in the panelled room needs changing, as our heads were lower than our feet with the current arrangement.

The lack of a washing machine is quite a negative for a family holiday, I did not enjoy handwashing wet and muddy clothes. I'm not sure where you could fit one in, but please consider it.

You have to park your car across the road from the property, which again, can be tricky with children, and you should be aware that several neighbours have right of access along the front of the house to their own properties, which although it was not a huge problem, there were occasions when the children of said neighbours would pull into the drive late at night with loud music playing, waking us up.

I would recommend this property for close adults only, looking for a peaceful retreat amongst lovely scenery. As a family, we usually holiday in the UK, mostly in Pembrokeshire and pay £650 for a 3 bed property on a National Trust estate in peak time, consequently, we felt that this cottage was quite expensive given what was on offer.

Owner's Response: Thank you for submitting a review of our cottage and for your kind comments. However many of the items complained about are referred to on the Owners Direct website: There are outside games available as well as the rowing boat including a Swingball set and a Cricket set. Inside there are jigsaws with a special mat which enables a part finished jigsaw to be stored off the table. There is a compendium of table games which includes games such as dominoes, snakes and ladders, ludo, draughts etc as well as playing cards and canasta cards. The details on the website do not claim to provide a TV or toys or children s books, nor a washing machine or dishwasher as there is no space to fit them in. We do not usually let this cottage to families with children under 10 unless they are babes in arms. This is because of the proximity of the lake and the drive. Before letting we explained this to this customer, and she reassured us that the road, drive and lake would not be a problem for her children. A table for the living room is a good idea and we intend to provide one in the future. With regard to the bed orientation in the panelled bedroom the current position of the bed is the only one possible. There are plenty of pillows provided to counter the ancient sloping floor. I am sure that the noise from our neighbours was an isolated case and is not usual. The old original beams inside the house are over 5 foot 9 inches high . The front door is lower. They were smaller in those days!
