About Karen Driscoll

Peter and Karen Driscoll own The Brake House.

We moved to The Brake House in 2013 with our two children and Soutra the Labrador. With grand plans for a self-sufficient smallholding, we quickly bought chickens (Dipsy, La-La & Po!) and sheep (Dolly,Flossie & Lady Ba Ba) who had our first lambs last spring and are currently in lamb again for April 2017. Meanwhile work on the garden, vegetable garden and poly tunnel goes on in between school runs and Peter's work in the NHS.

We know how hard the day-to-day grind can be and therefore the importance of a really good holiday.

We look forward to welcoming you to our little piece of "The Good Life".

Karen Driscoll purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Karen Driscoll chose Fife & St Andrews

The Brake is located in a beautiful and peaceful spot that is so convenient for St Andrews. It gives us all the space and tranquility we need and as a part of the history of the area, The Brake House is simply a wonderful place to be.

What makes this cottage unique

This area used to specialise in growing flax. A brake is a basic wooden machine used to break the tough outside of the flax stem and release the silky fibres inside. The Brake House was where the brake was kept, drawing in the growers from miles around.

The views of the fields, the old barns and weather vane along with the stables and trees (one we think is 280 years old and planted when the house was built) make for amazing views whichever way you turn. Brake Cottage was originally a stable block, built from the same stone as the house and converted into a one bedroom apartment with separate kitchen, sitting room and shower room, and having its own walled garden.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"A really lovely place to stay with all the creature comforts. A wonderful location with unbelievable wildlife and scenery. We don't play golf but might need to start in order to justify a speedy return!" Christine, Essex.

"Wish I could live there all the time!" Patricia, East Lothian.

Perfect for couple plus dog.

Enjoyed our weekend at Brake Cottage with our dog. The cottage was very comfortable and clean and had everything we needed. It is situated in a lovely quiet location with a pleasant walk along the farm track. The enclosed garden was ideal for our 8- month old Cocker Spaniel.

Beautiful Cottage in an equally beautiful setting. Perfectly situated for local beaches & St Andrews

  • 5 of 5

From start to finish our experience was excellent. Our hosts were extremely welcoming & very helpful in responding really swiftly to our enquiries both pre and post booking. Their advice on places to visit and their local knowledge was really helpful too. The cottage is lovely, beautifully clean & set in its own pretty garden. Our dogs were made as welcome as ourselves! This will be the first place we will try for our next visit to the East Neuk area.

Lovely cottage - we had a fantastic stay

  • 5 of 5

Myself and my Fiancée stayed at the cottage for our 10 year anniversary in March this year. We actually got engaged on the beach in St Andrews the night we arrived! We arrived on Friday afternoon to be warmly welcomed by Karen and her gorgeous black Labrador. Karen showed us to the cottage which was lovely and clean. We especially liked the nice touch of the jar of biscuits for our Labrador, Juno. We stayed for 2 nights and felt very at home and relaxed. The wood burning stove was fantastic. We will definitely return. Thanks again!

Great value & location

  • 5 of 5

Excellent communication & welcome, with property immaculately clean & well finished. Location is fantastic - near enough to St.Andrews to be convenient, but far enough out to be nice and dark and quiet. Would be interesting with a big dog, as it is very small, but good for just two people.
